KC Media Digest for week of May 4 - 10, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Gail Borelli encourages residents to leave the grocery produce aisle and walk the rows of you-pick farms in our area. Included is a handly clip and save list (which, if you're like me, you won't be able to find a week from now, let alone when the apple crop comes on, but give her props for trying).

Local wine guru Doug Frost takes exception to the high praises given by the mainstream wine media to the recently released 2003 Bordeaux.

Lauren Chapin (and your humble digester) anxiously await the season's first new potatoes

Jill Silva reminds us that muffins can be part of a healthy diet if they're not super-sized.

In The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza visits The Thai House, where he finds potential, but a disturbing lack of herbaceous Thai flavors.

And describes how a large multi-national corporation decided to flex its muscle against a tiny local business in what can, at best, be described as a frivolous threat of a law suit. So the next time someone invites you and your pooch to join them at Lill's, be very glad you're going to a quaint canine-friendly restaurant on 17th and not a stuffy, boring hotel lobby coffee shop!

Digester's Note: The Eats portion of the KC Star Preview Section returns next week after a three-week hiatus.

In The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza is lucky to snag a table for dinner at Room 39..

And you have ten days to call in your reservation for La Croix's Second Annual Crawfish Boil. Free lessons offered if you need help pinching 'da tail or sucking 'da head (as they say).

KC Media Digest for week of May 18-24, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Jill Silva officially opens picnic season in A Meal That's Good to Go.

Because approximately 20% of my disposable income (plus ALL of the big bucks I get for media digesting ) goes to support my KetelOne habit, it was with great interest that I read Anne Brockhoff's piece on super premium vodkas.

In the Star's [newly revamped] Preview Section

Lauren Chapin returns to weigh-in on our own John McClure's Starker's Reserve.

If it's true that we eat with our eyes, the Roselle Court at the Nelson is certain sensory overload (and don't get me started about the new building!).

Also note the inclusion of a local chef-designer in Thirty Under Thirty.

Lastly, if you're like I am and can never find the Food Q&A on the Star's website, the new design is a godsend. If you scroll down to the bottom of the Entertainment homepage, there are links to all of the entertainment-related Q&As. Lauren Chapin's Food Q&A is here if you wish to bookmark it.

In The Pitch

There are a few times when I am happy to be a humble media digester. Charles Ferruzza's visit to Dave & Buster's makes today one of those times. Having only seen and smelled the food, I still feel confident that his review is easier to digest than the menu offerings.

And in My Big Mouth we get a short history of the latest Dos Hombres outlet and the early 4-1-1 on Thomas (newly opened in the old Matadors space on 39th).

On Sunflower cable (Channel 6 in Lawrence, for those able to get it)

Jayni Carey is having a Spring Fling in her TV kitchen. Recipes and airtimes can be found on the Lawrence Journal World website here.

In Ingram's Magazine

Chris Becica reminds us that it's time to vote for KC's Best.

KC Media Digest for week of May 25 - 31, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

This week's Eating for Life recipe, featuring edamame, will be the fist of the series that I have actually been compelled to prepare. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Gail Borelli suggests hunting and gathering where the wild things are.

Doug Frost brings us up-to-date on the maturing South American wine market.

Check out the upcoming classes and demos on this week's Food Calendar.

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin is wastin' away in Margaritaville.

It appears that the former "Spotlight" has morphed into "Good & Cheap" which this week features Arnone & Gambino's Hot Spot Cafe, in the old Woodwether location.

In The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza gazes into Leaves of Glass and predicts a pun-ishing 'oolong' future for Prairie Village newcomer Green Tea restaurant.

And in My Big Mouth braves the ever-controversial subject of children in restaurants.

On KCUR-FM 89.3

The Food Critics join Walt Bodine for their alternating-Friday update of KC's dining scene. Not in our area? Click here, then select "Listen Live." And while you're there make a donation - it'll make you feel good.

KC Media Digest for week of June 1-8, 2006

Digester's notes

First, apologies for the delay in getting this week's digest posted. I've had the honor of meeting and dining with several eG society members lately and the blame for my tardiness lies squarely with them. :raz:

Second, I have heard from some of you that you enjoy having the Lawrence Journal World items included. I am requesting that they add "Food" to their web menu because they don't consistently offer a food section and it's difficult to ferret-out articles that might be of interest using their search tool. I'll keep featuring items when they're available and continue to work with them to get something more consistent going (if I have to drive over there and do it myself).

Lastly, we have a local eZine that I've been watching with great hope and some trepidation (after touting Fire and Knives only to have it expire after a few issues). I am convinced that Pete Dulin's Present is going to survive and thrive (even my "kiss of death" probably can't stop it at this point!) and so it is my pleasure to welcome them to the KC Media Digest. The link will take you to their home page, from which you can download (pdf) any issue (the current one is #9, but if you have the time browse the back issues - I think you'll enjoy them).

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Jill Silva introduces us to a blind cook who is adapting well to her culinary challenge.

And in a related story, Janet Majure and Neil Salkind discuss creating a barrier-free home kitchen.

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin visits Bollywood and shines her Spotlight on Joe D's and Room 39.

She also pays a visit to Sol Cantina, a little slice of the Baja in midtown.

In The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza comes to the same conclusion I have (after 10 years of trying to like it), the jazz is the reason to go to The Phoenix, not the food.

And in My Big Mouth we stroll down memory lane and wax sentimental about the greatest downtown bar ever, The Ship. I forgot how much I missed that place.

In Kansas City Magazine

I rarely 'digest' KCMag because of their frustrating lack of online content, but there are a couple of items worth noting this time around. Bacchanalia, the fundraiser for the Greater KC Restaurant Association's Education Fund is June 7. And KC Mag's "best of" voting is in-progress and curiously they have made it possible to vote online.

In Present

Tom Ruggieri offers the latest installment of The 100-Mile Diet, highlighting local meats. Also enjoy some nice photos taken at the 39th Street Farmer's Market (page 23).

It's First Friday, it's Pride Weekend, and the markets are brimming with good things to eat. If you don't have a great weekend, it's your own fault.

KC Media Digest for week of June 8-15, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Carlton Holton, Overland Park pastry Wunderkind is the object of Jill Silva's attention. [And this poor digester has had the Eurythmics living inside her poor, addled brain for over 36 hours now, thanks to the title.]

Lauren Chapin discovers garlic scapes.

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin answers the siren call of Ted Turner's foray into the dreaded realm called "upscale, casual dining." She likes most of what she finds at Ted's Montana Grill. Am I the only one who waxes sentimental about a day when phrases like "upscale, casual" had yet to be uttered?

And there is a little French boite in Liberty that seems to require my attention. Martanali Cafe has vol-au-vents on the menu and that's all the excuse I need to pay a visit.

In this week's Pitch

If you have not yet tried Pangea, Charles Ferruzza says your should check out their lovely [tectonic] plates.

And in My Big Mouth the trials and tribulations of the husband/wife food team - with a couple of upbeat stories thrown in for good measure.

On KCUR-FM 89.3

It's time again for The Food Critics on Walt Bodine. Tomorrow they may or may not be talking about foods you never thought you would eat, or enjoy. [sorry to be so wishy-washy - someone there has commitment issues.] Just go to their website at 10am CDT and click on "Listen Live."

KC Media Digest for week of June 15-21, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Anne Brockhoff introduces us to a local Serbian couple celebrating the feast of Krsna Slava.

And briefs us on the new smoother, lighter gins.

Jill Silva's Eating for Life extolls the health benefits of berries.

Lauren Chapin has a suggestion if you still don't know what to buy for Father's Day.

This week's food calendar includes a Bengali cooking class and several 'taste of' events.

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin adds another link to her chain of chains, Bonefish Grill.

Join the 10th Anniversary of The Chef's Classic to benefit Harvesters.

In this week's Pitch

Charles Ferruzza makes a follow-up visit to Red Snapper three years later and reports that it has found its groove.

The next venture of Snapper sibling, Max Chao, will be a Hawaiian bbq joint in the old Baja Fresh location (in front of Whole Foods). In My Big Mouth he offers a tease of the featured fare, and wonders if KC will be eating Spam-alot. (Hmm, if I were Chao, I would have a special in the works for when the musical plays here later this summer.)

At eKC Online

Lisa Waterman Gray reviews The Governer's Meeting House.

KC Media Digest for week of June 22-28, 2006

Digester's Note: I hope you all appreciate the willpower and discipline involved in filing this report BEFORE heading to La Super Rica Taqueria for a midday repast.

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Jill Silva's been watching Semi-Homemade again, I think. Read Some Assembly Required and decide for yourself.

This week's food calendar makes me wish I could be in two places at one time.

Get out and support our local farmers at these markets.

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin visits Overland Park's quirky Hawaiian fast-food outlet, Maui Express.

And checks out the latest cocktail trends at bluestem's wine lounge, JP's Wine Bar, One80 Lounge and re: Verse. If you've always wanted to play mixologist but didn't want to spend the $$ buying entire bottles of liqueurs when you only need an ounce, note the June 29 event. Doesn't everyone dream of having a drink named after them? Reminds me of an old joke about a grasshopper named Melvin.

In this week's Pitch

Charles Ferruzza burns up some more gasoline trekking out to The Legends to report on The Yardhouse.

And, in My Big Fat Mouth, visits with Lisa Cordes (an old friend and Exec. Dir. of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival) about kettle corn and the Bard.

In The Lawrence Journal-World

If you don't already know this, please heed the warning: Bay leaves can be hazardous to your health! Seriously, spread the word - I nearly lost a friend this way.

KC Media Digest for week of June 29-July 5, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Janet Majure and Neil Salkind remind us of one of the simple joys of summer, frozen treats.

Jill Silva's only slightly less-cool with her yogurt and berries.

Some "borrowed" content from Cooks Illustrated and Steve Raichlen is also available on The Star's website, to help you brush-up on your holiday grilling skills

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin checks out the now-chef-owned Cafe Maison

Also, if you scroll to the bottom of this review, there is a blurb about the Missouri wine laws and the take-home bags (previously discussed on our forum by a couple of the local restaurateurs, in more civil times). It appears this option is under-utilized so don't forget, the next time you order that second bottle and immediately wonder what you were thinking, that you can take it with you.

In the print version there was also a review of One80 in Westport. It's not posted online at this time but I will add it if/when it becomes available. If you haven't tried this place, they do have some interesting dishes and very attractive happy hour specials, in addition to their primo location and hip vibe.

In this week's Pitch

Charles Ferruzza dons his beret and visits Patrick Quillac's latest venture, Cassis. Like our own Katie Nell, he found a lot to like about it.

And, in My Big Fat Mouth he laments his second language selection but enjoys Sabor Centro Americano.

KC Media Digest for week of July 6 - July 12, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Janet Majure and Neil Salkind visit with the Armato family as they preserve (sorry) an old tradition.

Jill Silva gave me the nudge I needed to get out the molds and sticks and make some fruity paletas.

Lauren Chapin recommends the original wireless blackberries.

In the Star's Preview Section

Think I'll head directly to Lawrence for dinner tonight. Lauren Chapin and I seem to have 180-degree different dining experiences and that bodes well for me, as she found little to like at the new Pachamama's.

Consistent with our track records, she also suffered a less-than-ideal lunch at Thomas, where I enjoyed a delicious soup and sandwich on my first outing.

In The Star's Sports Section (yes, you read that right, Sports)

Although the content is not available online currently, there is a nice piece about Mano Rafael, Chef-Owner of Le Fou Frog and the French fans gathering at the restaurant to watch <<Les Bleues>> in their quest for the World Cup championship in today's Sports (hard copy).

In The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza, a veteran breakfast participant on both sides of the counter, is beginning to warm-up to Eggtc.

And back home again in Indiana, they've adopted a compromise on the smoking "situation" which suits non-breeders quite well but leaves adamant non-smokers and parents, well, fuming.

In the Lawrence Journal World

I am so verkelmpt I can barely continue to digest! The compound currently housing Yellow Sub and The Crossing (variously known throughout the years as the Rock Chalk, The Catfish, Norweigian Wood, etc, etc, etc.) is about to be dozed and turned into brick and steel condos. Is nothing sacred?

And the Lawrence outlet of the venerable Hereford House is no more. Owners are in negotiations with a local group who would re-open it as Hereford House Bar and Tables. Loy Edge, if you're out there, you should probably get some scratch from them for 'borrowing' the name.

On KCUR-FM

The Food Critics once again join Walt Bodine tomorrow morning to chew the fat about the local dining scene. At 89.3 on your dial or go to www.kcur.org and click on Listen Live at 10am CDT.

Present (an E-Zine)

The July issue of Present is online at www.presentmagazine.com and features the latest installment of the 100-mile diet, plus a visit to the winelounge at bluestem. Also, in case you don't get enough email, Pete Dulin is sending out some very handy, informative reminders of upcoming events, including wine tastings, so you might want to sign-up for their mailing list.

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Move over Dept of Homeland Security, Jill Silva says there's a new color code in town.

Anne Brockhoff reminds us that high summer is limoncello season.

Janet Majure's Come Into My Kitchen offers the flavor of cannoli but with a healthful twist.

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin sings the blues in the night when she finds the quality at Winslow's BBQ in the City Market crescendos at lunch.

But she has ragas of praise for the latest iteration of "the Indian restaurant on 39th Street,"Taj Palace.

In The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza casts his net north of the river to report on The Jumpin' Catfish.

And profiles long-time caterer and somewhat legendary Robert Salsman.

In the Lawrence Journal World

Tonight kicks off Salut!, three days of wine-focused events benefitting Cottonwood.

In Ingram's Magazine

Chris Becicka reminds us that the little Brookside neighborhood gem, Aixois is still serving solid French food.

Happy Bastille Day, Kansas City!

KC Media Digest for week of July 20 - July 26, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Gail Borelli welcomes the trend toward using traditionally savory herbs to add interest to desserts.

Janet Majure visits with a northeast woman who likes to share her uncle's pickled hot peppers with friends, old and new.

Jill Silva gives us additional incentive to include onions in our diet (NB: if you're one of those people who stops eating something once you find out it's good for you, you might want to skip this one.)

Local wine guru Doug Frost offers something a little different (and some sound advice): don't believe the hype.

Apparently Rachel Ray-bashing is so much fun the Star's Entertainment guy, Aaron Barnhart, decided he wanted in on the action. On Tuesday he filed this report on her new talk show. But this morning he grilled her for leaving the job of cooking to the hotel's staff while Jimmy Kimmel braved the unusually high temperatures to wow the critics.

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin visits the relatively new location of Tarahumara to investigate a claim of "lightest tamale." If the food is half as good as it sounds, might be worth braving the orange barrels of 87th Street.

And, in Good & Cheap, she finds much to like about the recent [re-]incarnation of Tatsu's in Westport.

In The Pitch

There are two sides to every tale and here is Charles Ferruzza's take on Tatsu's Westport outpost.

And, for those brave souls who leave the house on an empty stomach, here are a few new breakfast options in our fair cities.

In the Lawrence Journal World

For the time being, trans fats will not join cigarettes on the list of things banned from local restaurants.

On KCUR-FM 89.3

The Food Critics join Walt Bodine to 'dish' on the local food scene. Out of range? Click here, then click "Listen Live" and join in.

KC Media Digest for week of July 27 - August 2, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

During the IRL event at the Kansas Speedway earlier this month, Lauren Chapin raced around with some of the team chefs to find out about the challenges and rewards of a culinary career in the pits.

Jill Silva grills up some antioxidant-rich shrimp with pomegranate.

In the Star's Preview Section

Tomfooleries second location at Zona Rosa is a popular gathering place but Lauren Chapin finds that the food is not the attraction.

Tarantino's downtown is serving up sandwiches and pizzas reminiscent of another era, with the sugo of Anthony's "Nana" and other homey ingredients.

In The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza and friends check out the restaurants in the President Hotel and find potential waiting to be realized.

And the nostalgia of that renovated jewel inspires some history of hotels and food in My Big Fat Mouth.

In the Lawrence Journal World

The Westside Deli announces plans to move to a larger space downtown.

In the middle of dinner and realize you're missing one ingredient? Terry Rombeck explores culinary pinch-hitters.

With apologies for being a day late - I am traveling on official eG business so I hope I will be forgiven.

KC Media Digest for week of August 2 - 8, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

A local graphic designer shares his recipe for salmon 'candy' in Janet Majure's Come Into My Kitchen.

Jill Silva tries to teach old KC Q-ers a new trick with Big Bob Gibson's Alabama white sauce.

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin visits Tonic in downtown Overland Park.

And reports from Chicagowench's new French bakery, Artisan Francais.

In The Pitch

Looks like at least one local is prepared to go mano a mano with the big boys up north: Charles Ferruzza found steady crowds and a tantalizing menu at the latest member of Bo Ling's growing family.

Charles visits Asian mega store China Food Market just north of the City Market (where, apparently, the next Bo Ling's will be located).

In the Lawrence Journal World

Zig & Mac owners are joining the extreme makeover crowd as they take over the former Tanner's in Lawrenceand plan to bring their upscale, neighborhood bar & grill concept to that location.

Terry Rombeck finds out what's happening with the new beet generation.

And for those who are able to get Sunflower Cablevision, Jayni Carey reminds us that hot food can offer a cooling effect in the heat of August. Even if you can't watch it, you can enjoy the recipes.

KC Media Digest for week of August 9 - 15, 2006

In the Kansas City Star Food Section

Anne Brockhoff reminds us what little it takes to make a true margarita.

If the summer heat has you craving that ultimate summer dessert, key lime pie, try the relatively guilt-free version in Jill Silva's Eating For Life.

In the Star's Preview Section

No review this week, just the 'best of' list (those receiving 3 stars or better - again bringing the oft-discussed numeric rating into play).

In The Pitch

The venerable Charles Ferruzza visits 39th Street newcomer Thomas with mixed but hopeful results.

It's difficult to enter Thomas without getting a little misty about Cafe Allegro, so this week's My Big Fat Mouth is spent catching up with Steve Cole (whose daughter is not growing up fast enough ).

ETA: This week's feature, Made in Missouri, is all about wines from the Show Me state. Thanks to Zeemanb for reminding me - I saw it in the print version but completely forgot about it when I sat down to digest.

At eKC Online

Lisa Waterman Gray reminds us of a midtown treasure, Napoleon Bakery.

In the Lawrence Journal World

For the bakers among us, Terry Rombeck publishes winning recipes from the Douglas County Fair.

Tastebud

I stumbled upon the premier issue of a new local monthly tabloid yesterday. It was fairly appealing graphically and I was anxious to dash home and devour it, remembering how fun it was when Fire & Knives was still alive. Sadly, the content was rather disappointing in quantity and quality but, hey, it's the first issue. Look for it on free newstands throughout the metro. They have a website but it's just a homepage/placeholder at this stage.

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this slipped through my net (blame it on the Heartland Gathering), but the long-awaited Cellar Rat is now open.

Janet Majure's Come Into My Kitchen offers Jim Caccamo's enticing Cosmic Cannoli Ice Cream.

In Eating For Life Jill Silva suggests spicing up your cookie jar with healthful oatmeal cookies.

Applebee's new CEO puts change on the menu in an attempt to reverse downward trend.

KC Media Digest for week of September 7-13, 2006

The Kansas City Star

In the Food Section

In what I hope will prove to be a controversial article (in the sense of generating comments and questions, I mean) Monica Watrous poses the eternal question to chill or not to chill.

Janet Majure visits Richard Robinson, business traveler and international diner, in Come Into My Kitchen.

Jill Silva recommends a healthful late-summer meal to take advantage of the last few heirloom tomatoes in Eating For Life.

If you've enjoyed the proliferation of flavor-infused vodkas over the last decade, Anne Brockhoff encourages you to try this at home.

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin revisits Crossroads District pioneer Zin, now sporting a new chef (Karl Martens, whose work I enjoyed at now-defunct Cafe Trocadero) and some new business partners for owner Alex Pryor. I was happy to see her give credit to Susan Harvey as well. She (and her husband, Lazer) have added a certain something to many area restaurants over the years and, while the restaurant's bar can set the tone for an entire meal, rarely do we read much about those who tend them.

The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza returns home, home on The Range to see how the Harrah's semi-upscale steakhouse has evolved.

And in My Big Fat Mouth he visits The Embassy International Bistro and Bar.

The Lawrence Journal-World

Jennifer Oldridge encourages succession planting to extend your harvest into the fall.

In Come Into My Kitchen, Janet Majure visits with a home cook whose culinary and singing styles favor Sinatra.

If your backyard garden is winding down for the season, don't despair - there are still plenty of area farmer's markets going strong.

In the Star's Preview Section

Lauren Chapin reviews Shields Manor Bistro. (As I see the locals have already duly noted and critiqued while I was traveling yesterday )

The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza visits the venerable Bristol Seafood Grill, in anticipation of their return to downtown as a part of the Power & Light District.

And in My Big Fat Mouth attempts to document the many comings and goings on Southwest Boulevard.

In Come Into My Kitchen, we meet a retired educator, pole vaulter and baker who is working on his own recipe collection.

Gail Borelli writes of the link between schoolyard gardens and healthful eating habits in Reap It and Eat.

Doug Frost explains the affect of the latest wine shipping laws and tells us why they still have a long way to go before coming to fruition.

With the autumnal equinox the area Farmer's Markets begin to wind down. Be sure to visit one of the many we are fortunate to have in the area while there is still time.

Preview Section

Lauren Chapin revisits Vivace in the City Market area. They have a new chef (James Landis, formerly Sous Chef at Le Fou Frog) and some lunch specials that the reviewer enjoyed.

The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza heads to the west bottoms for some straight-forward diner fare at Jerry's Woodswether Cafe.

In My Big Fat Mouth we learn why, after months of anticipation, Nara (the new Robata restaurant in the Crossroads) is still not open for business.

KCUR 89.3 FM

The food critics were pre-empted last Friday but Thursday's Walt Bodine Show featured several of our area's urban farmers. Katherine Kelly (of the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture), joins other local growers to discuss raising food on vacant urban lots.

KC Media Digest for week of September 27 - October 4, 2006

The Kansas City Star

Food Section

If you're looking for a tasty, nutritious substitute to see you through the spinach crisis, Jill Silva suggests Swiss chard in Eating For Life, and offers a recipe for risotto.

In the second of a four-part series, Silva takes the "100-Mile Diet" concept (first introduced locally in Present Magazine) mainstream. (The first installment of the series appeared in Sunday's Star.)

Janet Majure learns the secret to red velvet cake from Eunice Nevens in Come Into My Kitchen.

This week's food calendar can be viewed here and the Farmer's Market calendar is here. Note: although it is not listed, I believe tonight is the last 39th Street market of the year.

Preview Section

Lauren Chapin returns to The Malay Cafe north of the river to find some new twists on familiar dishes and a new owner.

In Good & Cheap, former Honeymom's chef Susan Sanchez is cooking at the downtown KCK YWCA Corner Cafe.

Other miscellaneous items: Il Trullo is again open for lunch Wednesday-Friday (11-2); and by presenting ticket stubs or a playbill, theatre-goers receive a 10% discount on food and drink in the wine lounge at bluestem.

The Pitch

Charles Ferruzza and friends (not including this media digester ) visit Kaiyo where Chef David Loo (formerly of Sushi House) wows them with (among other things) his Hot Temptation Roll.

Lawrence Journal-World

If you still have green tomatos on your plants, here is some advice on how to use and/or store them.

Present Magazine

Congratulations to Pete Dulin and his hardworking and creative crew on the one-year anniversary of Present Magazine, the classiest (IMHO) e-zine about life in Kansas City.

Tastebud Magazine

Thewebsite of this fledgling local tabloid-format publication now boasts some content and archives of the first issues.

KCUR 89.3 FM

The food critics are back (barring presidential intervention) tomorrow on the Walt Bodine Show. You can listen live at KCUR's website; just click on Listen Live.

Lastly, I have not seen any indication that KC's local PBS station (KCPT) plans to broadcast the soon-to-premier Diary of a Foodie. I plan to contact them to request they consider picking it up in the future. Their funding for these programs is limited so the more requests they have, the more likely they will be to move it to the top of the wish list. If you are interested, let them know.

Through rain, sleet, snow, over indulgence, travel and even The Heartland Gathering I have somehow managed to crank out the digest. With the American Royal BBQ contest I have met my match. It is after midnight and I still have work to do, a few hours of shut-eye and off to the races again.

My humble apologies and I will strive to make up for it next week. Unless, of course, we win Grand Champion, in which case I will be far too busy with the media and paparazzi for such trivial matters.

Wish us luck and check back next week.

KC Media Digest for week of October 12-18, 2006

The Kansas City Star

Food Section

In the final installment of her four-part series on local food, Jill Silva explores the challenge of getting products from the farm into the market and spotlights Diana Endicott, the driving force behind the Good Natured Family Farms cooperative.

Eating For Life features a one-dish Italian skillet recipe.

Janet Majure visits empty-nesters trying to remain active with healthful dishes such as Dave's Veggies in Come Into My Kitchen.

Last call for the Brookside Market - here is a list of the remaining fall farmer's markets.

Preview Section

Lauren Chapin visits yet another new downtown eatery, Cheesehead and enjoys the comfort of a gooey grilled cheese sandwich and a hearty, if unconventional, chili.

With the downtown construction boom well underway (Sprint Arena, Power & Light District, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts) it appears that we can look forward to a new restaurant opening in the area weekly (note to self - start a thread).

In FYI

Too late to watch live but worth mentioning, local baker Donnell Chambers appeared on Martha Stewart's TV show yesterday. Click here for the recipe he shared or to view it online.

The Pitch

Located in the Hospital Hill area, You Say Tomato has been getting more attention than a Gershwin Revue. Charles Ferruzza and friends agree that this is one thing that should not be called off.

Charles bids adieu to the venerable Nichols Lunch in My Big Fat Mouth but comforts us with news of a new Hayes (of northland fame) grill set to open in December at 1515 Grand.

Lawrence Journal-World

Lawrence area farmers cash-in on the booming spinach market in the wake of the eColi outbreak in the Salinas Valley.

Ingram's Magazine

I started a thread over on the Food Media and News Forum about this, but thought it merited a mention and a link in this KC media digest so The Heartland folks would be certain to see it.

Local writer Charles Ferruzza (whom I have still never met, FWIW) was included in the Marlowe & Co.-published Best Food Writing 2006. His review of SO Redux, Reality Bites, appears in the "Reviewing Life" section.

Congratulations! (If you're lurking out there somewhere.)
