Am I the only one who saw Steven Shaw on PBS (WLIW - NY metro area) last night? He escorted the camera to Papaya King and Gray's Papaya during The Hot Dog Show.

i saw that fat bastard on pbs years ago.  in fact, that was when i realized that he was someone "important", as i had been reading his website for a few months prior (way before his proper domain of "fat-guy.com").  steven's thoughts on March (in NYC) sent me there for the first time, and it became a favorite of mine.  when i saw him on PBS soon after that, i pointed at the tv and stomped my feet, yelling to mrs. tommy that "the fat guy is on tv!"  she was unfazed.  she just didn't "get it", as they say.

was this a repeat of that show, or perhaps a new one?

This show about hot dogs in the United States was produced in 1999, but I never saw it...until tonight! Lo and behold there was Mr. Steven Shaw navigating his way around Papaya King and Gray's Papaya in NYC.

I caught it on Connecticut Public TV, and it was so good it could even make a vegan crave a dog.

Hey, change the title if you can think of a way to juice up a Fat Guy eating Hot Dogs on TV.

After having to look at that "Skinny Japanese Guy" SCARF down all those Hot Dogs to win the Hot Dog slurping competition for several years in a row.

Yes there isn't any competition, after all watching "Steven" do his thing creates inspiration. IE: After all "Holly Moore" admits that it's what inspired him to go after the Dogs with his excellent site, that soothes on a hungry night.

So to the continued success of both "Grey's" and 'Papaya King" and all other "Hot Dog" establishment's we all should acknowledge that when it comes to eating "Fat Guy" is indeed a inspirational leader.

Take into consideration what inspiration he's given to the southern eating places during his working trip into the old south. What if he was on holiday ?

We would all welcome seeing a true eating show on television. Much more enjoyable then a Cooking Show.

eGullet has something very special to capitalize upon. Seriously We have 2 couples who established eGullet the Shaw's/Shapiro and the Perlow's now if we joined them together with the Sterns we would have the ultimate reality television show. With a topic that's of interest to everyone eating.

Take the next step and show this posting to the producer of the Survivors, Rocco and Trump and I'm sure that the timing is right, think of it show starts when book is published = $$$$$.

Then theres a bottomless amount of characters to keep the show on the air among eGullets posters, plus it can travel around America [North, Central and South] plus around the Globe. With re-runs, syndication and greater popularity this can become it's own world of gluttony. [Only if it tastes good]

Am I nut's as usual or on to something possable ?

Irwin :rolleyes::unsure::biggrin:

I don't say that I do. But don't let it get around that I don't.

Now, I don't want you to get too jealous, but I've actually eaten a hotdog with Fat Guy in Papaya King. So let me see, that headline would run: "Andy Lynes Eats Hot Dog Whilst Standing Next To Fat Guy, But Not On TV".

Yep, we're all jealous

Count me in for the show, as long it is behind the camera

Old topic, I know, but it's back--AGAIN. I've seen this show before as well, but I hadn't realized it was from '99--they've been playing it quite a lot these past few days on our PBS. (very timely with the talk of Papaya King coming to the DC area)

It is amazing though, new viewers must see it every time they replay it, which is, why, they replay it. Last night at dinner, my FIL was talking about the show.

Of course when I saw it a few years ago, I wasn't a member of eg, and this time did the obligatory--shouting to my husband, "fat guy's on TV!"

Fat Guys eating Hot Dogs ™ is a very popular theme these days. I happen to know, based on inside info, that there is an entire series being developed based on Fat Guys™ eating stuff. There will be an entire line of tie-ins marketed along with the show, Fat Guy™ Hot Dogs, Fat Guy™ Condiments (that's condiments, kids, get your minds out of the gutter). There will be scene after scene of Fat Guys™ eating stuff. The entire thing will no doubt be filmed in Widescreen Format, as a regular camera would have difficulty catching all of the action.

Check local listings as times may vary.
