  1. Oh yeah, my overgrown one was just fine. I stewed it with some tomatoes for dinner last night Our cats must be related lol.
  2. I use bales of hay (wheat) on most of mine. There are pics on the garden thread if interested.
  3. Well, that sounds about right then if I do the math. Maybe I will have some good sweet corn after all
  4. Yes, we fertilize a ton. My sweet corn is about 4' tall right now but it already has tassels. My field corn is always way taller when that happens. Is mine stunted or is that normal? I planted the seeds when the soil was 70 degrees F. Lol I used my thermapen to test the soil. Oh and we've had plenty of rain so moisture isn't an issue.
  5. NICE! Yep, the best way is to go out early in the morning while it's cooler and pull the damn weeds. Don't skip even one day. The bastards take over.
  6. Yes and also to keep weeds from growing. We get a few bales but mostly I used hay from our wheat harvest. I gathered like 5 or so trailer loads from the fields and brought it back. This is my first year growing sweet corn. What does the poly do for the corn? Soil warmth? edited because bail is not the same as bale. none of my hay is in prison.
  7. I'm going to be reading this in more detail but I just wanted to say THANK YOU for doing a detailed pictorial on garlic. I've never known what in the hell to do with mine. I planted some like nine or even more years ago. The greens grow up....and then I mow them down.....now maybe I will know how to harvest. Or maybe my garlic is a different kind. My brain tells me I planted elephant garlic. Can that be right??? It's been so long I'm foggy. Beautiful harvest. I'm jealous.
  8. I LOVE creamed spinach. Thanks for the reminder. I need to make some. Hopefully this fall I'll have some spinach in the garden that doesn't bolt so quickly.
  9. Aw thanks It's hard work, but good work....not like WORK work. I hope the cantaloupes come back too. I'm just sick that I killed them. I've used that stuff before but maybe it was when the plants were more established. Newman (the cat in the pic) eats the greens from onions and he loves dill and lettuce. He's funny We eat the field corn sometimes---it's ok if you hit it just right. It's not as sweet but really it's good. Our field corn is used for horse feed, cow feed and even cornmeal and syrup. Wouldn't it just figure that you have a banner year when something like this happens? Ugh. I feel bad for you.
  10. I'm curious, too, Anna. I didn't guess because I figured I was the only dumb one who didn't know what it was!
  11. Lovely sugar snaps. And, for the record, your meal isn't late, it's right on time --I never eat until around 8 pm my time --I know, blasphemy.

    Dinner 2015 (Part 3)

FauxPas---LOVING the pea shoots. I may have to do that. MM--Is that a slate or chalkboard that the tacos are on? I think I have the same one and I love it. We eat a lot of striped bass . Good stuff. I'm going fishing in the river at our house tomorrow morning. I'm braving the hummingbird size mosquitos and the monster flies that bite the living hell out of me in the garden so I'm sure they are much worse down there. BUT, I will be bringing beer and tomato juice...that will take the sting out lol. Maybe we'll have some fresh fish for dinner tomorrow night. Anyway, tonights dinner was chef salad. All veggies from the garden. In the middle of the platter is a bit of tuna salad that I made up.

    Pickles--Cook-Off 32

Rotuts, I'm sorry I'm no help but I'm sure someone around here is. FauxPas, another gorgeous batch! I made my one jar of quickles. I think you're right, FP, the frozen garlic should be ok. Thanks for reassuring me

    Pickles--Cook-Off 32

NICE FauxPas!!! I'm so glad you made some And, thanks for bumping the thread......I'm getting ready to make some, too. I don't have any garlic cloves that aren't frozen so I'm nervous about that. I'm going to try the frozen and see if they work ok.
  15. Summer is here in Kansas. Not too super hot, though (yet). We've had rain and sun. Almost perfect for gardens and crops. Thought I'd post some garden pics. This was taken a month ago. I think peas are so pretty! They have now been pulled out and there is just space there waiting for a fall planting of spinach and/or lettuce. This was also taken a while ago. Onions. They are still there but are not as green and I've picked some. The rest of the pictures are from today. Picked this morning. Not a great picture, but you get the point lol. Yes, Huiray, that zuke got away from me. He was hiding and I didn't see him so he got a bit big. As soon as I bring the basket of garden goodies in the cats are all over it. I'm getting ready to make some quick pickles (quickles) here in a bit. Cucumbers. I have a couple more growing to the east. Eggplant Collards Basil Okra--aren't the flowers pretty? A few days ago I noticed the dreaded squash bug had invaded the squash so we sprayed them with some kind of something. The plants did NOT like it and some of the leaves "burned". I killed the cantaloupes (I think). Sigh. Live and learn. The squash are coming back so that's good. The sweet corn is in there too. The field corn looks much better. Go figure. Some of the peppers Some of the tomatoes

    Dinner 2015 (Part 3)

I'm getting ready to make a small batch of "quickles" this afternoon. The ones I made last summer lasted well into the winter with no problems. I put those in a mason jar with a lid. Next will be the ones I ferment in that stoneware container that you've seen on the pickle thread.....I guess we should revive that thread soon These that I pictured above last just fine in a tupperware container. I've never had them go bad...but then again, we eat them almost every day with dinner. I use just plain 'ole cider vinegar.
  17. Well, I've decided I am one of the few that just doesn't like dark beer. I really dislike drinking it. I bought some to do onion rings and fish in and, well, I like a light beer batter MUCH better.
  18. Those blueberries look amazing.

    Dinner 2015 (Part 3)

Happy Saturday everyone!!! I'm getting ready to head out to the garden but thought I'd post a bit first. I made myself an iced coffee just now. Aren't those good on hot summer days? I don't like coffee really...but I like these. Kim--I haven't had a sloppy joe for years and now I WANT. I think the last time I made them from scratch and they didn't taste they way they should. Huiray--YUM on the lychees. I've only had the canned kind. I know fresh are much much better. A few meals: I made sauce and used up some veggies. Heavy on the squash from the garden. I had this porcini mushroom pasta in the pantry and used that. Oh wow was it good. So I googled it and I can't find it The brand name was in Italian and hard for me to read. I know I ordered it online from somewhere but I can't remember. Pizza night. Why do I post pizza pictures after Ann does??? Mine will never measure up to hers! This is now in a container in the fridge and will be added to and eaten all summer long. Vinegar, touch of sugar, onions and cukes from the garden. Ann's lemon pepper wings again with collards. I have a lot of collards. Had a smidge (what??? smidge isn't a word?? come on spellcheck) of chili left over so of course chili dogs must be made. Light, crispy onion rings on the side.
  20. Glad you're now a non-lurker!
  21. I've never had the pleasure of eating poutine. What makes this one gourmet?
