    Okra

Honestly, these had no slime at all. Light and crunchy. I can't wait for more to grow

    Dinner 2015 (part 4)

Did everyone survive the fireworks? I stood in my driveway and watched (I can see them being shot off in all the towns--Kansas is quite flat lol) for about five minutes. Then the mosquitos tried to carry me away so I gave up and went to bed. My pictures are terrible from last night. I'm embarrassed to go after Liamsaunt! All of your food looks SO good. Liuzhou--Your chicken looks very very tender. Ok, here are the terrible pictures: Cucumber, cherry tomato, red onion, feta cheese and dill with splashes of olive oil and champagne vinegar. Healthy amounts of salt and pepper were also added. Picked my first okra yesterday. I only got this many.....I planned my whole meal around them lol. I wanted to fry them. So, I did. Fried fish and chips (fries lol) to go with Also made a cherry pie Host's note: This post triggered an extended discussion of okra, which now may be found here.

Happy 4th, ya'll! Liuzhou--I had the same kind of shrimp....only mine were frozen probably months ago lol. Shrimp in a spicy vodka tomato cream sauce.

No, mine isn't hot water. I put rendered lard in a cast iron and throw it in the oven while it's heating up. Then I make my cornbread. When the oven is at 450 degrees I pour the batter in and bake it for 20 mins. The lard gives it a great flavor. I've also used bacon grease. Edited to add that my go-to cornbread isn't sweet at all. I like a savory one.

Liuzhou--I love chicken livers and I don't eat near enough of them. Need to rectify that. My collard greens are going great guns in the garden. Was hungry for cornbread. So that meant we needed red beans, andouille and rice to go with. I like a lot of fresh onion and a glug of red wine vinegar on mine
  6. Nah, just plain 'ole red onion sets. Nothing fancy.
  7. Oh that spinach is so pretty! Thank you for the pictures. I had to pick all of my onions yesterday. I pulled one the day before and noticed it was starting to get spongy. When it gets hot here the onions have to come inside. No laughing...I know they are small , but they are good
  8. Those are some big mushrooms! I see stuffed 'shrooms in your future.

    Dinner 2015 (part 4)

Happy belated Canada Day to all of my friend up north And, to all of my US friends, Happy 4th!!! I figure a lot of you are taking tomorrow off and making a long weekend. I used to hate it when the 4th landed on a Saturday or Sunday. No extra day off for me. We had big plans to do ribs and seafood etc. but that's gonna be hard to do as we don't have any lol. Somewhere around here there is a 4th of July thread. I'll have to find that and get some inspiration. Ann--I'm definitely making your warm Caprese salad when I get some good tomatoes. That sounds sooooo good. Dcarch--That shrimp and tofu dish grabbed me. TFTC--I haven't had crepes for years and years. And years. Your savory ones made my mouth water. Not great pictures but you get the drift. Ann's wings, sauteed zukes and taters Had some leftover venison steak so I made some quesadillas. Edited to say that the beans up there are Rancho Gordo and I can't remember the name of them. They are the best beans I've ever had. Super creamy inside.
  10. Nanaimo bars! Ok, so that's not a dish I guess lol.
  11. Would it be good to make a chili out of?
  12. I see that you guys are in a remote area. Ok, so I switched to a smaller dish. I'll report back lol.
  13. Well, I'm getting ready to spoon the batter for the plum (mine is fresh peach) torte into the spring form pan. I only have a 10" pan and the batter looks rather skimpy compared to the pan. Should I switch to a smaller baking dish? PS--the recipe says you can use an 8 9 or 10 inch....
  14. I am so hungry for ice cream that I almost passed out looking at those cones. Those strawberries look so sweet and good. I see Kerry got her mustard
  15. Good to know. Do you do this will all seeds?
  16. Your shorter corn looks like mine. I feel better I'm going to order the New Zealand for fall. In fact, while I'm in cooling off from hoeing, I'm going to order now. Thank you for the pictures and including the measuring tape. P.S. My nails look just like yours
  17. My greens get especially dirty after a hard rain. I have the same salad spinner and it's a life saver. And, it's fun to use lol.
  18. Oh yeah, my overgrown one was just fine. I stewed it with some tomatoes for dinner last night Our cats must be related lol.
  19. I use bales of hay (wheat) on most of mine. There are pics on the garden thread if interested.
  20. Well, that sounds about right then if I do the math. Maybe I will have some good sweet corn after all
  21. Yes, we fertilize a ton. My sweet corn is about 4' tall right now but it already has tassels. My field corn is always way taller when that happens. Is mine stunted or is that normal? I planted the seeds when the soil was 70 degrees F. Lol I used my thermapen to test the soil. Oh and we've had plenty of rain so moisture isn't an issue.
  22. NICE! Yep, the best way is to go out early in the morning while it's cooler and pull the damn weeds. Don't skip even one day. The bastards take over.
  23. Yes and also to keep weeds from growing. We get a few bales but mostly I used hay from our wheat harvest. I gathered like 5 or so trailer loads from the fields and brought it back. This is my first year growing sweet corn. What does the poly do for the corn? Soil warmth? edited because bail is not the same as bale. none of my hay is in prison.
  24. I'm going to be reading this in more detail but I just wanted to say THANK YOU for doing a detailed pictorial on garlic. I've never known what in the hell to do with mine. I planted some like nine or even more years ago. The greens grow up....and then I mow them down.....now maybe I will know how to harvest. Or maybe my garlic is a different kind. My brain tells me I planted elephant garlic. Can that be right??? It's been so long I'm foggy. Beautiful harvest. I'm jealous.
