I slayed the Dragon Fruit...now what?

Hey all,

I have a bit of a delima. Since I discovered Dragon Fruit a few months ago on the web, I've been obsessed with finding it here in DC so I could try it. Many weeks of calling and exploring various markets paid off last night...I managed to snag one at Whole Foods. I got it home, and took pics to remember the moment, and then grabbed a spoon to dig in. .....but it really tastes.... BAD.

Maybe not so much bad as just different and totally not what I was expecting. It has such a pleasant citrus fragrance, I was expecting a taste similar to that of a Kiwi. Boy was I wrong! So now, what do I do with it? I hate to waste it (little buggar cost $7!!), and I hope that maybe mixing it with something will improve its taste. Any suggestions??

Yup, it's a bland fruit. We get it for a fifth of that price here, or less. To eat it, you should just slice off some of the bottom, then peel the skin off. No need to eat it like kiwi fruit. So, you don't like the taste....use the fruit skin for a facial. Leave it on for 10 minutes...tightens up your skin ever so nicely.

BTW, did you get the white or pink flesh variety? The pink flesh one tastes better.

I got the white flesh variety...at first I thought maybe it wasn't ripe yet, but I guess it is all around just not very tasty. So disappointing! I will, however, try the face mask though. Thanks for the tip!

If you don't like it au naturale, dress it up. Here's what I made for lunch last week. Dragon fruit, 2 varieties of sweet potatoes, toasted pumpkin seeds and yogurt.

that actually looks really good! Thanks!

That's interesting Tepee... I don't believe I've ever seen the pink-fleshed variety here in North America. How much of a taste difference is there between the two?

That's odd, because I've ONLY ever seen the pink-fleshed kind.

Joie, I haven't personally tasted it but there was a discussion about dragon fruit in a Malaysian forum I go to, and everyone said the very shocking pink-fleshed one is much sweeter........priced higher too.

Among the wonders of Dragon fruit are the unique appearance (wonderful for garnish) and incredibly compelling health benefits.

This fruit has the highest level of soluble fiber of any fruit I know, and the red-fleshed varieties are incredibly rich in anti-oxidants. To top it off it even has vitamins!

The pigment from the red-fleshed varieties is really a unique fuchsia coloration. It’s quite stable (except to heat), and keeps for weeks in the fridge. Makes a great natural food coloring for any dish that doesn’t require cooking.

TJ's in Annapolis also has dried dragonfruit. I too was disappointed with the taste, especially because it is so beautiful, and the name is so enticing to kids! Glad to see some serving suggestions.
