An apple a day...or not?

This time of year, I'm usually downing at least 2-3 apples a day, thanks to Nettie Ochs in Livingston--because they carry the ever-elusive Winesap, which is usually available starting in mid-October. Imagine my distress when I went to Nettie Ochs last week only to be greeted by a barrier at the end of the driveway! The sign says that they will be closed this season due to the passing of their patriarch.

So now I'm totally jonesing for Winesaps, and have no clue of where to find them! This is not an apple that the stores carry, 'tho I don't know why. All I've been able to gather is that it's not grown in crazy quantity.

Anyone have ideas of who might carry them (preferably in northern NJ)?

It's not North Jersey by a long shot, but you can usually get them in season at the Reading Terminal Market here in Philadelphia.

A hidden jewel for fabulous apples is a long time little stand that wraps around the building on the corner of Oradell Avenue and the RR tracks in Oradell. For 6 weeks up until about the 1st wk of November, this stand has some of the best apples I've ever tasted. He has Macs, Gala, Delicious, (Red and Golden) and Winesap. Unlike supermarket apples, these are super-crisp, sweet, and wonderful. Prices are $1.49 and $1.89 for a 3-pound basket. Only about 2-3 more weeks of this, don't miss!!

You're both right. Stayman is an offshoot of Winesap. Staymans tend to be larger, whereas the true winesap is a smaller apple. The tastes are similar, but not identical; I find the winesap a bit more complex, as well as a bit spicier and more wine-like. Both, however, are delicious and both work well either as a dessert apple or in pies.

I'm almost positive that I saw them at the first stand on the left. It's the one that also sells the fresh flowers. I think that is Matarazzo's stand.

I picked up some Empire and Macoun apples from them last week and they were great! I like'm tart and crisp.

(OK, maybe except for the fact that they were $1.50/lb at Matarazzo's and of course, seen later at another stand for $1.25/lb.) But in this weather, they certainly brightened my day.

In other news, I left there and stopped at Gina's Pancificio (that's what the sign says) for the first time. OMG!!! I'm just never over there when they're open, but from now on, I'll make it a point to do so. Some of the most stunning bread I've seen in a long time (with a counter guy to match ), and the piece of rosemary/onion/garlic foccacia that I bought was deeeelish, as was the jalapeno/cream cheese/double corn muffin. Other muffins for breakfast tomorrow--with a full report to follow in the right thread.

C'mon on down to Philadelphia, Curlz. Stayman winesaps were 99 cents/pound today (two pound minimum, but that's easy to hit) at Benuel Kaufman's stand at the Reading Terminal Market. So you'd only have to buy 500 pounds to make back your Amtrak fare. But then, you'd be able to taste Tommy DiNic's pork sandwich, too.

Curlz, I gather you're in the Montclair area now. So their Farmers' Market is even more convenient, as you've found. But I was going to mention that Matarazzo's has their own farm stand over in North Caldwell at 216 Mountain Ave., just a little ways north of Bloomfield Ave. It's a really quick drive from Montclair, unless the bridge in Verona is still washed out, though the Saturday traffic on the detour route was nil when I went.

They're supposed to be open 9-6, 7 days a week, thru December, but when I was there a couple weeks ago, they had a sign out announcing reduced hours for November. I didn't take note of the details, so call first (973) 226-3289.

I found them on the Jersey Fresh site (they also do a stand at the Rutherford mkt), dunno why they didn't show in the above list.

Thanks, Ghost. I'm still in my old haunt, but my bro and family are all in Montclair, so I'm over there at least once a week--and their FM is far more convenient in terms of day/time than the Rutherford one.

I haven't been to Matarazzo's in years, but now that I know they have Winesaps, it's another good option for me.

If you're looking for a better deal, my suggestion would be Parks, which has an address in chester, but I really consider to be Mendham. From Morristown it's a very quick ride (maybe 12 minutes) and simple too, just straight down 24/Mendham Road. Wightmans is a little closer, but generally isn't quite as competitively priced.

winesaps and macouns pretty much do the trick for me as well. north star orchard grows a variety called 'liberty' which is a macoun cross and tastes very similar. fantastic.

Next time you can't find your apple of choice, you can check out Delicious Orchards. They are my country market of choice, located in beaucolic Colts Neck (Central NJ) and will ship just about anywhere. Their website lists which apple varieties are currently in season. (Their baked goods are outstanding as well.)

Finally, here's a link to their affiliated orchard, located around the corner, where you can go apple, pumpkin, peach and corn picking, when in season - Eastmont Orchards.

We went to Nichols Orchard in Monroeville yesterday for apples. We picked Winesap, Roma, and Matsu. The Matsu are quite tasty. Sweet, a little tart, yellow and crunchy. Roma were not very sweet, but very creamy and a little tart. Winesaps were pretty amazing. Tart, sweet, nice apple flavor and gorgeous red color.

And for $4 a basket off the ground, perfect for apple butter and pies...

Yum.

There is NOTHING like apples off the tree, warmed by the sun... oh man!

Yummy.

Cupcake... the bakery mini-van in the orchard.

The trees were bursting with apples!!!
