contest rules and submissions

The rules are simple, come up with the best burger recipe and we will put it on our menu for one year, named after you!

no viagra laced burgers allowed ( I can see it now, the boner burger, it keeps you going all night)

BTW that was an actual suggestion by a teammate of my partner.

As a general rule, eGullet does not allow members to run their own contests in forum. However, after much discussion (and gin) with site management, we're going to allow this thread to continue under the following conditions.

  • Any and all entries to the Build a Better Burger contest should be sent via email to gerald. Any entries made in forum will be deleted.
  • This thread can also be used to discuss potential ingredients for your entry, although doing so can reveal any secret ingredients to you competitors. Keep the discussion local (i.e. where to source, what's in season, does this burger already exist, etc.)
  • gerald, if you would be so kind as to post the winning entry once selected

Thanks to gerald for inviting us to participate in this venture! I'm hungry already.

A.

To answer a couple of questions

1. multiple entries are allowed

2. the budget is simple, if you want your burger to sell don't create one that is going to cost 12.00 to make.

Wait, your daughter might be onto something. The ocean meets land. Like a surf and turf burger! Filot o fish combined with a patty and breaded to make one giant-yet-distinctly seperate (texturally) burger.

4 year olds have the best ideas!

Saw Mr Tritt on Breakfast TV this morning - trying out potential entries from City Tv.

The Lamb/bluecheese/mango chutney combo sound very good, but not so adventurous.

However, some of the more brave combos kind of had me scared:

- Two blueberry waffles+maplesyrup+eggs (this was truly... uh... brave)

- Peanut butter+bacon+bananas

- Beets+fried eggs

Hope the search is going well and I hope that egullet people are giving you better possibilities...

What? You who brought the Elvis Sandwiches to the White Trash Party... is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black?! :raz:

Okay - that was strictly social anthropology... now if Gerald had added marshmellow fluff... that would push it into yummy land!

Over 600 submissions to date still a couple of weeks to go. Some excellent submissions, some, not so much. But all very interesting. Had one person email for clarification half a dozen times on the exact rules, to give me a burger that substituted back bacon for bacon.

Had one that said we should use a gingerbread pudding bun, but i told neil he should try it first.

REALLLY!

no not really. :hmmm:

^ You won't know till you try it. Ginger and beef go together very well I must say.

Testing is ongoing with a total of 1056 entries, I would like to thank the egulleters that contributed to the build a better burger contest, stay tuned for updates.

We hope to have a final 15 recipes by the 10th of january and will then forward the recipes to the judges for their input.

Once we have done that we will narrow the field to the final 6 for tasting and declaration of the winners.

Oh I bet the beets and fried eggs would have a huge following. There are plenty of Aussie expatriots around here who seem to miss some really weird stuff from their homeland. One word - vegemite. Need I say more? Burgers with beets (make sure you cook your own, as I've been told the canned pickled beets available here just don't cut it) and fried eggs are pretty common over there.

After reviewing, cooking, tasting, testing (about 100 times personally) we came down to the 15 top choices. The judging took place yesterday at an undisclosed location, so secure it was that one of the judges wentr to the wrong place.

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

We will be having a release party for the new burger on tuesday from 3-5 where we will be giving out samples of the top 3 burgers.

davie st location 1030 davie st from 3-5.

thanks again to all the people that submitted recipes and we hope that this will become a yearly contest.

Further, thanks to the judges who gave up their time to try alot of meat (10 different burgers were made and judged).

Hope to see you tuesday

I enjoyed judging the 12 semi-finalists with Tim Pawsey, Judith Lane and Angus Reid of the Lions. Angus plays centre for the mighty Leos and we were quick to ask who has gentler hands - Dickinson or Printers? He reported that Dickinson moisturizes and so he'd have to vote for him. I'm pretty sure that's why Casey's headed south.

But the hands down winners of the burger contest (eating 12 large hamburgers is a necessary professional hazard) are each flavourful and complementary to their central ingredient. I hope that you concur with our decision.
