Portland author (and previous Beard winner) Janie Hibler was nominated for her excellent book The Berry Bible. (Which you can find on sale at Powell's for under $12 at the link provided or on their clearance rack.)

I think Ethan may not technically be eligible yet. You have to have been working in a specific reqion for the last three years straight to qualify. Union has only been here for a year and a half. I think before that Ethan spent some time in Atlanta, so until he reaches three years from the time he came back he can't be nominated.

If that's not the reason, then he was robbed.

So if you have to be someplace for 3 years how is Sundstrom eligible? Lark hasn't been in business for 3 years....

He was at Earth & Ocean for a long time before that, though.

What really jumps out at me is that Portland seems to have gotten short shrift, considering what a kick-ass food town it is.

I've only been to Harvest Vine, of the nominees, but I adore it and think it's unique and deserving of an award.

What jumps out to me is that there are four from Seattle. Usually there's one from Hawaii, one from Alaska, one from Portland, and one from Seattle, with the last from Montana, Idaho, Wyoming...

P.S. I hope Holly gets it.

Darren, Paley's is a fabulous small and personal restaurant which you can infer from the fact that we chose them to do Mark Bittman's Cooks and Books Dinner in Portland. Vitaly Paley is a natural (and a former ballet dancer). He has earned this honor. Kimberly Paley who runs the FOTH is a very gracious host. PM me if you'd like to ride down with me on May 12th. I'll return to Seattle the next day.

Hey Judy:

Actually Kimberly was the ballet dancer and Vitaly was/is the piano player! His food and the restaurant really ARE good. And just so you know, there are a few places left for the Cooks & Books Visiting Chef Series dinner at Paley's Place for the Mark Bittman dinner on May 12th.

I know I will see you there....

I emailed Paley's asking for a reservation later in May when I am there for an event at Timberline Lodge. From looking at the menu, I am in for a treat. I think my motto will go from "Life is Good in Tulsa, Oklahoma" to "Travels for good food" l

It is good to be a BBQ Judge.  And now it is even gooder to be a Steak Cookoff Association Judge.  Life just got even better.  Woo Hoo!!!
