Where is there a good asian supermarket in London (preferably in zone 1 or 2) ?

Specifically looking for a place with lots of SE Asian items.

There is also Oriental City in Colindale on the A5 (EdgwareRoad) or Wing Yip, also on Edgware but just inside the North Circular...

Where can I get pré-salé or Pauillac lamb/agneau de lait in London.

I want those little critters (like you get in France) that have been whipped away from their bleating Mothers shortly after birth and are as pale as the last drink of milk that they took

I've been trying to buy some for ages. The furthest I have got is by pleading with friendly farmers to kill their pride and joy a few weeks early. I have a couple of potential sources, but they are not Pauillac or Pre-sale. Rather, one is an Oxfordshire farmer who supplies usually to Waitrose and the other is someone in Northamptonshire, whom I've never spoken to.

Apparently Harrods/ Harvey Nichols sometimes sell the stuff, but it obviously would be super-expensive.

I remember there was an article somewhere with Sam and Eddie Hart of Fino talking about Milk-fed lamb and where to get it. You could ring the restaurant or their PR company.

Wild Harvest (see here) have milk-fed lamb but it's coming to the end of the season. I gave them a call and if you go along tomorrow morning (it's in New Covent Garden) they should be able to help.

there are lots of Asian grocers in Soho, of course, on Brewer St.

But there's a clump of Malaysian shops on either Hogarth or Kenway Road opposite Earls Court tube as well.

There are 3 Phillipino shops and 1 Thai shop across from Earls Court tube. No Malaysian ones.

I'm quite fond of New Loon Moon in Chinatown, opposite Loon Fung.

What particular SE Asian country's items were you looking for?

There is an excellent Thai supermarket on Chepstow Road near Westbourne Grove called Tawana, which has a remarkable array of mishapen vegetables and odd-smelling pastes.

Does anyone know where I can get good quality second-hand pots and pans? I want old-school heavy cookware, but I can't afford the new stuff (too much money spent on food to afford cookware - a certain irony, I feel).

I read an article in the NYTimes about closed restaurants auctioning of their used gear. Does anyone know of this sort of thing in the uk?

There's a selection of stuff on Ebay under the business section but you need to trawl through it a bit to find the decent stuff.(Click Here)

I can get salt marsh lamb (from the Essex marshes) from my local butcher in Reigate in Surrey and very good it is too. A few years ago I bought some milk-fed lamb from Waitrose but it was disappointing - but then what supermarket meat isn't?

So, anyone know where to get home cheesemaking supplies.

I'd prefer (at least to start out with) a kit that comes with everything including a recipe for a single cheese, just so as I cant mess it up too badly the first few times :raz:

Spam in my pantry at home.

Think of expiration, better read the label now.

Spam breakfast, dinner or lunch.

Think about how it's been pre-cooked, wonder if I'll just eat it cold.

Where can I buy Three Snakes liquor ?

Last months Glass magazine had a review of a new restaurant in Manchester (Sweet Mandarin) which referred to their best selling cocktail - based on Three Snake Liquor , described by one of the owners as three snakes drowned in ...40% alcohol".

Tried Gerry's in Old Compton St with no luck.

There are a number of specialist auction companies, one of which is Hilditch, www.hilditch.com I think if you log on they list all the auctions, but you really do need to go and view to see if equipment works- they give you an extension lead to an elec. point, you plug it in and thats it!! So sometimes its a risk, but on a quiet day there are some amazing bargains to be had

and another question, since buying "the cake bible" I've been on the hunt for the fiori di sicilia essence she uses, any clues where I might be able to get this in the uk?

anyone know where to get manageable quantities of Sodium alginate and Calcium chloride in the UK, I have found loads of places in the USA and heaps of Chinese pharmecutical suppliers more than happy to supply me with 250kg or more, but all I want is a kilo or two of each.

struggled with this for a while so can someone put me out of my misery please?

Alex.

Try MSK for the Sodium alginate and Calcium Chloride. I haven't ordered anything from them but they supply specialist food ingredients. They have some interesting stuff in their catalogue and supply to restaurants in London, I'm led to believe that they have suppled the French Laundry as well. The Sodium Alginate isn't in the brochure but a coulpe of months ago they confirmed to me that they do supply it and can also supply the test tube kit for making the caviar as well. Their Catalogue advises that they have no minimum order and no carriage charges.
