Other than that, I think Tommy recently mentioned a place in Bergen County...

Joels' Malibu in Ridgewood. He specifically mentioned the soup--perhaps he'll elaborate.

Joel's has terrific Israeli Chicken Soup, and most of the other things on the menu are excellent as well.

Unfortunately, NJ does not have a Soup Nazi or a Hale & Hearty as in NYC, but there are also some delis which have good homemade soup to take out. The best clam chowder, if you want something of that ilk, is at the Maywood Fish Market.

What part of NJ are you in, what type of soup, and do you want sit-down or take-out?

Exactly what I was thinking. I can't eat soup out anymore (except at really great restaurants) because it just doesn't match up to my own.

The only place I can think of is Café Pierrot in Sparta. Don't know if that's near you. They have good quality homemade soups (although they're not listed on the website) and wonderful baked goods. Sweet place for a nice lunch and worth checking out anyway.

There is a location in Andover as well but it is just a bakery.

Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes! Without doubt or hesitation, a tiny converted summer kitchen on Blackwell Street in Hopewell, NJ called SOUPE DU JOUR owned & operated by Patty Phillips 609-466-3777. My wife and I have been traveling from North Jersey to this Central spot for nearly three decades. They take NO credit cards and their hours are extremely limited (daily 11-2, I think). It only seats about 16, but you cannot beat the quality or creativity of the soups served. I cannot rave enough about it. :wub:

Whole Foods has a nice selection of homemade soups.

I've purchased their Chicken Soup and it was excellent, with lots of chicken and vegetables. The Butternut Squash Soup is also very nice, especially this time of year.

When it's cold and rainy I love Asian noodle soups. Here are some of my favorites:

Saigon Republic, Vietnamese, Englewood - Combo Beef Pho, Spicy Lemongrass with Coconut Milk and Chicken, Hu Tieu, Roast Duck Soup - click for menu

Binh Duong, Vietnamese, Bloomfield also has excellent Pho, actually they have an even longer list of soups

Wondee's, Thai, Hackensack - Tom Kha Gal (chicken, mushrooms, coconut milk, no noodles), Tom Yum Goon (shrimp, spicy, no noodles), they also have a variety of noodle soups.

Asahi, Japanese, Fort Lee - Nabayaki-Udon, and a variety of other Japanese noodle soups.

Penang, Malaysian, East Hanover - Clay Pot Noodle Soup (a variety of seafood in an eggy broth with thick noodles)

China 46 (Ridgefield) or Silver Pond (Fort Lee) for Chinese noodle soups.

On the other hand, if you want Monster Matzo Ball Soup -- go to Harold's Deli in Parsippany.

I second this suggestion. I grew up not far from this place and not only are their soups fantastic, but their breads are as well. Actually my first introduction to Soupe Du Jour was for their Sunday brunch, which still ranks as one of my all-time favorites. Definitely check it out.

Jez, for a few days, Chef, I thought I was the only person who knew about this little gem. You are right about the breads, too. We often end up purchasing a loaf or two and a few contains of what soup they may have in stock for the road trip up north. Their Sunday Brunch is cute. Nothing to write home about, but most assuredly good quality. I'm glad there is another person enjoying SOUPE DU JOUR! :biggrin:

to all of the Soupe du Jour fans....perhaps, a little over creamy...like, pureed foods, with heavy cream added? Granted, with a highly limited menu, you can't try it all..but my four visits all sent me away with the same opinion. well flavored pureed soups with cream, a bit blah....yes, great bread..i should note that at every visit, I WANTED to like it...I respect your opinions, and since it has been two years since a visit, and it is on my wellbeaten path,I will stop in soon. :smile:
