Willy Wonka Shock Tarts. These things are awesome for us sour people. I could eat the whole roll at once if I let myself.

Cream cheese/salami on Triscuits.

Dill pickles and cheddar.

Butter on saltines.

Jif peanut butter and goosh (marshmallow fluff) on Wonder Bread, side of Frito's, cold glass of milk. Better yet - Frito's smushed in sandwich.

Totino's Party Pizza. Oh, the horror.

Pringles.

I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

I seem to recall this one being mentioned by someone else, but I'm not sure whether or not it was on this thread... But, it's something I haven't had in years that I occasionally think about and how delicious it can be:

Wendy's french fries, piping hot and crispy, dipped in a cold chocolate Frosty

They were called "Bagel Cheese Dogs" and they were in the vending machines in the dorms at American University. I'm not even completely sure if this particular brand of bagel dogs is avaliable retaiil.

This is going back to circa 1987, so who knows if the company is still in business.

Oh joy, you can apparently buy them from AMAZON!

Oh wow - amazing! Will have to try them.

But... call me perverted, I don't care... I still yearn to see the vending machine (or one like it) too. If anyone has spotted such a thing in the recent past, PLEASE let me know!

Cream cheese/salami on Triscuits.

I know it sounds weird but someone on eG (alanz) introduced us to the pleasures of smoked canned clams on top of Socialbles crackers topped with Philly cream cheese. I think he also hit them with Tabasco.

Strange to be sure but actually pretty damnned tasty.

I'm right there with you on that one. It's my normal "Screw it, I don't want to have to think about it" dinner. 7 minutes on the pizza stone, and life is good...

If I'm feeling froggy, I get the cheese ones and add the pepperoni myself.

Screw it. It's a Butterball.

I haven't done this for a while, but I used to eat those Gerber Toddler Stix, chicken or turkey, once in a while. My friend said it was the most disgusting thing he ever saw me eat, (which is saying something) but I kept on eating them. I don't know what the hell was wrong with me.

Lately, I've gotten hooked on Korean blood sausage, and can't seem to stop, but I'm not as ashamed of that, because they're actually good.

I love cold Dinty Moore beef stew. It is like dog food! And I am like a dog.

In theatre school, Trinity Rep Conservatory, 1989. Living on a 25 lb wheel of cheddar cheese -

from May of 1987. From the Trinity Rep warehouse.

Monotony broken up with cereal, doused with instant coffee, when I could afford it.

My cat came bouncing in merrily every morning, expecting something different from "le Fromage Stank." I used to say to her, "when I do well, you'll do well...when I do bad, well, ..."

Thus ran about a month or so of my life.

Whoops, left out some important details:

From the bottom up:

1) Sociable cracker

2) Smear of cream cheese

3) Smear (or crumble) of bleu cheese

4) Smoked baby clams (in oil)

That sounds a little like one of my favorite WRONG snacks-

From the bottom up

Wheat Thin

Smoked Salmon

Cream Cheese

Dollop of Pickapeppa

Capers (as many as you can balance and still hit your mouth)

Repeat as directed

And I will eat the hell out of that famous bachelors delight-a whole hunk of cream cheese covered in Pickapeppa and stabbed at with triscuits or wheat thins. Goes well with pickled okra (really, it does, this is not one of my okra jokes  )

Ugh, I forgot a couple. The dried pasta reminded me of one.

I love uncooked rolled oats. If I'm picking some up from the bulk bin at Whole Foods, I have to be careful, because I've caught myself snacking on them in public.

Also, and this is probably my most shameful: Dunkin' Stiks. They're made by Little Debbie or Lance, and they're "doughnut" sticks. Basically deep fried shortening and flour dipped in a crapload of sugar and allowed to age in the vending machine. The shortening leaves this vile film on the roof of your mouth, too. Damn. My sister and I used to eat these all the time when we worked for my dad in the summer.

This isn't mine, but my husband's shame:

The first time I spent the night at his apartment I got up the next morning looking for some cereal to eat. His roommate was already in the kitchen, and I asked him where I could find the cereal. He pointed to the cabinet. I opened it and found the cereal. But I also found a box of Milk Bones. "Andrew, are you and Heath getting a dog?", I asked.

"No. They're Heath's. He likes to snack on them." As in the man I just spent the night with eats dog biscuits. Because he likes them.

Not sure what this says about me, but I married him anyway. For the record, he no longer eats dog biscuits, though I've seen some human grade ones with apples and peanut butter in the store, and I've been tempted to buy him some, just for old time's sake. But I have a feeling they just wouldn't be the same as the Milk Bones.

As a child, I'd eat the "ears" off the large Milk-Bones, never the body, and never a smaller size - they had a crisp neutral grainy taste.I've always looked on it as my foray into pica - but it was probably some acting out when I couldn't find my mother's stash of Hershey's dark chocolate bars!

After nine pages I STILL don't think I've seen anything as embarassing as eGullet founder Jason Perlow's vending machine bagel dog obsession.

. . . I have simply got to know more about this bagel dog thing. Who knows, it might lead me to join in Jason's iniquity. Anyway, I gotta SEE it. I gotta SEE the vending machine. I gotta... yeah, I gotta TASTE it. I just gotta.

And my variation on this is:

Triscuit cracker (or a Wheat Thin)

Schmear of Boursin or Rondele cheese

Smoked oyster (oil drained and bathed in vinegar)

Yummy! We used to eat tons of these in college. Haven't tried it in years, but may just have to now.....

Oh, we share the same affliction! I love those things! Did you ever try microwaving one for a couple of seconds? Yummy!

I forgot to mention in my message to Jason that it was my mother who introduced me to the smoked baby clams/cream cheese/bleu cheese snack.

She also said it was an aphrodesiac and I recall her mentioning that the snack was in some way responsible for at least one of my younger sisters <s>

8 dogs for 10 bucks? That's a freaking ripoff. That's like... the same per-dog price as they'd likely be individually in the vending machines, PLUS you have to pay shipping on top of that!

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm new... I'm sure this has been a topic before, but I couldn't find anything, and I was curious...

Come on... you know you have one... That tasty little treat that you hide in the back of the cupboard, or maybe in your glove compartment. That one item in your grocery cart that you would cover up with a bag of blood oranges, just in case you run into somone while you're shopping.

Mine? Two words... SLIM JIM
