I have a question for folks who are on low carb diets -- do you eat two foods in particular -- tomatoes and yogurt. If so in what quantity? IF not, why not... looking for some insight

i eat yogurt, but only if it's full-fat. and of course un-flavored.

and tomatoes are fine too.

tryska -- tell me bit more about the yogurt -- in what quantity? is it okay to use it as a marinade for a low carb meal?

I make my own yogurt with a blend of whole milk and half-and-half. To eat, I add nuts, splenda, and vanilla and/or almond extract. A few dried cherries. If I have a piece of fruit coming to me, I add that too. So in all, I use about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of the yogurt for a light meal.

Considering that most of the marinade will remain in the bowl, I can't see any reason not to use a yogurt marinade, especially if the partakers are not on the induction phase.

Theoretically, a person could make sour cream cultured with a yogurt starter. That would be entirely acceptable.

Ripe tomatoes are good. Just not a pound at a time.

definitely you could use it for a marinade monica, since really it's the souring, and the enzymes you will be using, not eating the yogurt itself. but you want to choose full-fat, simply because it has less sugar.

as for quantity - just use the nutritional label as your guide. unles of course oyu are making your own in which case....well i don't really know? just use the normal amount - if it's full-fat, carb-impact in a marinade will pretty much be zilch.

My South Beach book is on loan (constantly) but I seem to recall that tomatoes are only allowed in limited quantities at first. Don't recall why. I think yougurt is okay as long as it's unsweetened, or artificially sweetened, no fruit etc.

A tomato typically contains 5g of carbohydrate, so in moderation The target is 25g-50g/day depending on the stage of the diet.

A portion (8 fl oz) of plain whole milk yogurt is more like 10g carbs, so most avoid.

Many yogurts have sugar or honey added; low fat or diet ones are the worst since the fat has been replaced with starches to give mouth feel.

I guess they are OK as a marinade, since not much stays on the meat.

Tomatoes: yes. In season. Life is too short not to eat good tomatoes.

Yogurt: to avoid the hassle of "Atkins constipation" I have, with breakfast, a small dish of raw rolled oats, a few spoons of cracked linseeds, a bit of Splenda for sweetness, all moistened with plain yogurt, perhaps 3 tablespoons. Sounds terrible, but it actually tastes good and it seems to work.

The rest of breakfast is fish, meat or eggs.
