The Today Show is apparently having a contest for the best sandwich in the nation. One of the five finalists is the "Frenchy's Fantasy" at Perry's Deli in the loop in Chicago.

Has anyone had it? I tried it today... whoa - double decker roast beef sandwich with bacon. Not the best sandwich I've had; possibly the largest.

Next time I'll try the peanut butter, ham and bacon with tomatoes and mayo sammy there...

The mufflata from Central grocery is my pick.

Harold's Deli

Edison, NJ

Height: 7 inches

Weight: 26 oz.

Overheard at the Zabar’s prepared food counter in the 1970’s:

Woman (noticing a large bowl of cut fruit): “How much is the fruit salad?”

Counterman: “Three-ninety-eight a pound.”

Woman (incredulous, and loud): “THREE-NINETY EIGHT A POUND ????”

Counterman: “Who’s going to sit and cut fruit all day, lady… YOU?”

Perry's sandwiches are kind of bland.  Its gimmick is the size but the meat and construction of the sandwich isn't top-notch.  Quantity over quality.

I completely agree. Also, I am totally over the whole "Restaurant Nazi" trend. I'm not interested in forking over my cash to be told how to act on my lunch break-- supposedly my break from being told what to do. And it's a cafeteria-style place, not Avenues. Please don't tell me to get off my cell phone...

Anyone that voted for a cheesesteak or facsimile thereof rather than a Roast Pork Italiano from Philly is just wrong.

Vesuvio's is right around the corner from where I live/work. I love those guys, I truly do. But cheesesteaks, contrary to popular belief, are NOT the best sandwich to be had in this town. They just aren't. Vesuvio's isn't known for their cheesesteaks. This is a fluke and I'm curious how it happened. Could the PR machines be at work? How a restaurant that isn't known for it's cheesesteaks (or it's sandwiches in general, at least as far as I've known) could end up on this short list in the company of Katz's pastrami or Central Grocery's Muffaletta and other Holy Grail sandwiches is a mystery to me.

I had the same thought!! Broccoli rabe, provolone, roast pork. Yum.

Yes, if hot dogs count, this would be the winner  Otherwise, my vote would go to the lamb sandwich at Fiddleheads (I am counting on those of you who have had it to back me up now  ).

I don't know which is more ridiculous - these particular nominees for "best sandwich in the nation", or the whole idea of trying to decide the "best sandwich in the nation" in the first place!

I agree. It's almost as ridiculous as trying to decide the "best movie of the year." Oh, wait ...

Said sandwich is known at Perry's Deli as the "Peter Panski." I ate at Perry's several times and can't once remember anyone ordering it.

Before leaving Kansas City I made my normal pit stop at Dean and Deluca and picked up a Tuna and White Bean and one of their Italian subs replacing the tomato with roasted red pepper. I think both of those are excellent sandwiches.

A true hot dog sandwich would be the Italian Hot Dog, otherwise known as the "Newark Style Dog". Seen only in a few counties in New Jersey, this sandwich was invented by James Raccioppi in Newark, N.J. in 1932. It consists of an all beef dog (more often 2 dogs for a double) that has been fried or sauteed placed in oven baked pizza bread (resembling a pita) and topped with fried or sauteed peppers, onions, and potato slices or chunks.

Jimmy Buff's, Dickie Dees, and Tommy's are three of the more popular establishments serving Italian Hot Dogs.
