I'm guessing the butter is what is making them spread so much (a Land'o'Lakes recipe so it's no surprise they're using two sticks). You could try adding more flour so the spreading would be lessened or forget the logs and use a small cookie scoop and put them on a cookie sheet and freeze them for a bit before baking to see if that slows the spreading down. They sound delicious though for a "Houston, we have a problem" cookie.

Thanks for taking one for the team. I'm sorry it was a bust. Maybe it's one of those things where it sounded good on paper, but... I'm finding that the more of their "specials" I try, the more I'm disappointed. They seem to have a problem with execution.

Local vs. national ice cream brands: Which do you choose? Any favorites?
Toliver replied to a topic in Ready to Eat
Can you find Tillamook brand ice cream (click) there? I'm impressed with their take on different flavors. Their "Oregon Strawberry" was refreshing and tasty. I've also tried their "Udderly Chocolate" and, while it didn't knock my socks off, it was still very good. Thanks for giving us your taste-test results! -
@liuzhou It looks like she hand-shredded/tore the entire head of cabbage. Why not use a knife? Is the dish better when the leaves are torn as opposed to being cut? It just seems a little odd to me.

Have you thought of making your own? "The make-your-own vanilla extract experiment"

Ask her to take one for the team and report back on how it tastes.

"Walmart, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's are recalling thousands of pounds of ready-to-eat salads" The article lists the products being recalled and the stores where they were sold. There is also a link to the FDA Food Recall site in the article.

A couple more I found this afternoon...The first two in the list are not the usual sale-bargain-priced...just a wee bit above that but the two books are from Williams-Sonoma so they may be of interest to some. "Williams-Sonoma Salad of the Day: 365 recipes for every day of the year" Kindle Edition $3.74US Please read the reviews before purchasing. One of the reviews mentioned that the Kindle version is not the most recent version of this book and that the recipes may differ a little between the two versions. William-Sonoma's "Soup of the Day" Kindle Edition $4.46US This is supposed to be a revised version of the original book, with 100 new recipes added (see the Amazon info page for this cookbook for a listing of some of the new recipes). "Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen" Kindle Edition $2.99US This was issued to go along with the film of the same name. I'm thinking most if not all of the recipes had to be from Julia's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" but I do not know this for certain, or from which volumes the recipes are from. Chef Isabel Cruz’s "The Latin Table: Easy, Flavorful Recipes from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Beyond" Kindle Edition $1.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.

"Arby's has a new menu item — and the internet is quacking up about it" Unfortunately, this is not a nation-wide promotion: "The list of 16 lucky duck cities"

Some of these have been lingering in the Kindle monthly deals...others may have already been posted for which I will apologize for any duplication of effort: I used to subscribe to Martha Stewart's "Everyday Food" magazine until the month they published a recipe for a grilled cheese sandwich. Really? That being said, here's a couple non-Martha cookbooks on sandwiches: "Simple Italian Sandwiches: Recipes from America's Favorite Panini Bar" Kindle Edition $1.99US "Perfect Panini: Mouthwatering Recipes for the World's Favorite Sandwiches" Kindle Edition $2.23US "Better Homes and Gardens 365 Comfort Foods" Kindle Edition $2.99US It seems like every time I turn around on Amazon, there's a new Persia-related cookbook... Chef and "Lucid Food" blogger Louisa Shafia's "The New Persian Kitchen" Kindle Edition $2.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the list of recipes. There are also two sample recipes posted in this cookbook's Amazon info page. Chocolatier Fritz Knipschildt's "Chocopologie: Confections & Baked Treats from the Acclaimed Chocolatier" Kindle Edition $2.99US One disappointed reviewer said this is less about making chocolates/candy (mentioned there's only a recipe for truffles in it) than it is about chocolate-centered recipes for desserts and other foods. There is a recipe for some rather pale-looking "Chocolate–Peanut Butter Cookies" from Chocopologie posted on this cookbook's Amazon info page. Not a cookbook but a travelogue...eating his way through Vietnam... "Eating Viet Nam: Dispatches from a Blue Plastic Table" Kindle Edition $1.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.

Regarding the sage, I could of sworn someone on eGullet riffed off of an ancient eGullet recipe "Pancetta Embossed Chicken" (click) by adding a sage leaf on the skin side of the chicken. It sounded amazing at the time. I tried doing a site search of eGullet through Google and came up with tons of recipes using sage (ravioli recipes and another recipe with fried sage leaves in browned butter and olive oil mixed with the pasta of your choice...and so on). But I am thinking it would hardly put a dent in your sage supply. Good luck with your beans!

There's a famous mini-chain in Los Angeles called "Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles" (click). I think it's the salty-sweet taste combination that brings customers in.

I saw these in the local Walmart Neighborhood Grocery store. A little odd in that they were charging ten cents more for it than the cost of the box of the regular Cheddar Bay Biscuits. Must be worth it!

Today's discoveries... This one is not quite sale-priced, but close: Tom Colicchio's "Craft of Cooking: Notes and Recipes from a Restaurant Kitchen" Kindle Edition $3.99US Alice Waters' "The Art of Simple Food: Notes, Lessons, and Recipes from a Delicious Revolution" Kindle Edition $2.99US Mimi Thorisson's "A Kitchen in France: A Year of Cooking in My Farmhouse" Kindle Edition $1.99US There are three recipes on this cookbook's Amazon info page. America's Test Kitchen's "The Complete Make-Ahead Cookbook: From Appetizers to Desserts 500 Recipes You Can Make in Advance" Kindle Edition $2.99US Over 400+ pages, 500 recipes. Probably culled from their previous books, but this isn't just a Kindle single-type cookbook with only a handful of recipes. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.

Just when you think they're done fiddlin' with the recipe, they try something different: "Oreo's Biggest Cookie Ever, The Most Stuf, Is Coming Soon" See the article for the photo (scroll down the article). No release date has been announced.

I think all 3 of these cookbooks may have been on sale before: "The New Persian Kitchen" Kindle Edition $2.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the recipe listing. "Michael Symon's 5 in 5: 5 Fresh Ingredients + 5 Minutes = 120 Fantastic Dinners" Kindle Edition $2.99US "Southern Heirloom Cooking: 200 Treasured Feel-Good Recipes" Kindle Edition $1.99US No listing of specific recipes. Use the "Look Inside" feature to see some of the actual recipes included in the book. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.

My BookBub email this morning recommended this cookbook: "Authentic Polish Cooking: 120 Mouthwatering Recipes, from Old-Country Staples to Exquisite Modern Cuisine" Kindle Edition $1.99US However, one of the review mentions the cookbook seemed to be missing recipes for certain Polish food genres (e.g., Polish bread recipes) So then I found this (different category...not Polish) cookbook on sale that was very well-reviewed: "Southern Italian Desserts: Rediscovering the Sweet Traditions of Calabria, Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, and Sicily" Kindle Edition $1.99US There isn't a list of recipes but three recipes from the cookbook can be downloaded from the Amazon info page for this book (follow the link above). Using the "Look Inside" feature there isn't a typical listing of the recipes but you can see that the recipes are grouped by their region in Italy. One reviewer did say there weren't enough photos of the completed food. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.

A different hamburger recall than the previous one that was posted: "6.5 million pounds of beef recalled due to salmonella outbreak"
-
Here' another article on that recall that does sort of mention where and what: "1 dead as N.C. meat producer recalls ready-to-eat ham products for listeria concerns" The article lists at the end the plant manager's phone number if anyone needs more information.

I found this sale-priced cookbook today: "The Sullivan Street Bakery Cookbook" Kindle Edition $2.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the list of recipes...sections 7 and 8 of the recipes are interesting for a bakery cookbook. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary. edited to remove a misplaced apostrophe.

I've been waiting for the price to drop on that cookbook. It's a new month so there are a bunch of new Kindle cookbooks on sale on Amazon. Due to their slightly-higher-than-sale-price I won't post a lot of them. I think they are worth looking at. For example, the over 500 pages America's Test Kitchen "Cook's Illustrated Baking Book" Kindle Edition $3.99US is such a book. To see this month's Kindle cookbooks on sale (I've previously posted these instructions) go to Amazon's Kindle Books web page, click on "Kindle Book Deals" which is located at the center top of the page underneath the black strip of info. On the new page you're taken to, on the left hand side of the web page, click on the category "Cookbooks Food, and Wine". This will sort out all of the Kindle cookbooks currently on sale. There are a number of ATK cookbooks currently on sale (which is odd...last week they were on sale and then they weren't...make up your minds ATK!), some worthy (see above)...some ATK cookbooks are just culled recipes from their older cookbooks. Let the buyer beware. Here are some more Kindle sale cookbooks I found that haven't been posted yet (I think!). "Small Victories: Recipes, Advice + Hundreds of Ideas for Home Cooking Triumphs" Kindle Edition $2.99US Better Homes and Gardens "The Ultimate Soups & Stews Book: More than 400 Satisfying Meals in a Bowl (Better Homes and Gardens Ultimate Book 43)" Kindle Edition $2.99US I am sure I may stumble across a few more but will post them later. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.

I received an email from Costco yesterday mentioning that they had the Instant Pot Nova Plus 6 Qt 9-in-1 Multi-Use Pressure Cooker for $89.99US. That price (you have to log in to the Costco web site to see the price) is $25 off the normal price. They say the sale discount comes from the manufacturer which explains the Instant Pot sales at Target and Amazon. I believe the sale price (at least at Costco) is only through Sept. 30th (Sunday).

Thanks to all for the kind words. I do hope others are also looking through the Amazon Kindle cookbooks for the bargain-priced books. My knowledge of who's who in the cooking world is limited though expanding daily and I might not post something that should be posted due to my ignorance. Hopefully, someone else will post what I might miss. I also randomly click on a cookbook (no matter the price) and then look on the page that opens for the listing of "Customers Also Bought..." and have found some bargains that way. That being said, here are some bargain-priced cookbooks that may be of interest (though the first listing is slightly higher in price than what I normally post): Australian-born chef Chris Honor's "Chriskitch: Big Flavours from a Small Kitchen" Kindle Edition $3.99US The BBC's "Saturday Kitchen Cooking Bible: 200 Delicious Recipes Cooked in the Nation's Favourite Kitchen" Kindle Edition $.99US Based upon the BBC's TV series. Use the "Look Inside" feature to see some of the very British recipes. Miriam Gonzalez Durantez's "Made In Spain: Recipes and stories from my country and beyond" Kindle Edition $.99US The "Look Inside" features shows the list of recipes and not much else. Blogger-turner FoodTV Host and winner of the Judges' Choice IACP Cookbook Award Molly Yeh's "Molly on the Range: Recipes and Stories from An Unlikely Life on a Farm" Kindle Edition $2.99US No recipes are listed in the "Look Inside" feature but the first review on the page lists some recipes from the book. "WECK Small-Batch Preserving: Year-Round Recipes for Canning, Fermenting, Pickling, and More" Kindle Edition $1.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.

I found this mention of Instant Pots on sale this morning. Two places, two different versions of the same pot: "Instant Pots Are On Sale For Just $80 At Target This Week" Amazon has a behemoth version of the same Pot on sale: "Instant Pot DUO80 8 Qt 7-in-1 Multi- Use Programmable Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker, Rice Cooker, Steamer, Sauté, Yogurt Maker and Warmer" Currently $89.99US (they say that's 36% off the regular price). I have no idea how long either sale will last. edited to clarify

This sort of thing drives me nuts. Did I stumble onto this sale-priced cookbook at the tail-end of its sale? And if so, why didn't I see it before? Or was it just a 1-day sale...a sort of "flash sale"? My apologies if anyone is disappointed in my posting...
