  1. Not food, but food-related: "Vitamix is recalling 105,000 blenders; 11 people injured" Wait a second...you mean if I separate the blades from the canister, thus exposing the sharp blades, there's a chance I could actually lacerate myself if I'm an idiot and mis-handle said sharp blades? Why...recall it at once, I say! What sadist designed this dangerous piece of equipment?
  2. @heidih Thank you for the link! @gfron1 I am with @gfweb... this foraging stuff scares me, too. I know you've made a business/career out of it, but I'd be too scared of that 1-in-a-million bad-for-you mushroom that gets past the expert eye and onto my plate.

@lindag Best not to ask, so the Kitchen Gods don't hear you and try to test you! I've learned not to manifest things in my life by saying some things aloud that shouldn't be said.

@dcarch Your bacon raft is the stuff of dreams! Well done. If I could find a golf clap emoji, you'd get it.
  5. @gfron1 Your link doubles back to your post. Was it supposed to lead somewhere else?
  6. Not food-related books but this may be of general interest: Four of P. L. Travers' Mary Poppins books in one collection: Mary Poppins Mary Poppins Comes Back Mary Poppins Opens the Door Mary Poppins in the Park Kindle Edition $1.99US Be forewarned that the Mary Poppins of the book isn't quite the same as the Julie Andrews film version. But the books are classics. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  7. That's interesting. I've seen quite a number of "professional" chefs on FoodTV use plastic wrap (usually with foil on top of the plastic) and then put the food in the oven. I always thought the plastic wrap might melt in the heat of the oven but supposedly if you don't go over a certain temperature, it won't melt.
  8. My local Vons' grocery is promoting Hatch Chile Days with roasting happening on Aug. 11th. Didn't this just happen? I am getting old.
  9. @Shelby I was going to suggest the same dish. My niece learned her chicken adobe recipe from watching (and recording on her phone) her Filipino grandmother make it. Exactly this. See my response just above. My niece solved this issue by recording her grandmother on her phone while the grandmother made her recipes. My niece was able to figure out the amounts/measurements and now my niece is the one the family turns to make all of the Filipino dishes for the family get-togethers. (Yes, @Kerry Beal my niece did do the dishes after getting the recipes ). As for the "recipe tweakers" out there...my belief is you should make the recipe I've given you one time exactly as written. That becomes the veritable "yardstick". Then feel free to tweak it all you want. You just won't be making my recipe any longer. On the up side of this, my sister-in-law tweaked one of my mom's best dessert recipes (butter-flour-walnut-sugar baked crust with layers of sweetened cream cheese, chocolate & vanilla puddings, topped with whipped cream and shaved chocolate) and came up with a strawberry version (no puddings but replaced with a layer of sliced strawberries mixed with the red strawberry glaze you can buy in the grocery stores). The tweaked recipe tastes just like Marie Callender's fresh Strawberry pie. Win-win!
  10. Another Holy Cow moment (at least, to me). Ever since I recently posted about that Lidia cookbook that was sort of on sale but not bargain-basement priced, Amazon keeps taunting me whenever I peruse the cookbooks by showing even more cookbooks from Lidia, and Ina and Emeril and even Pepin, but not bargain-priced, of course. They showed me an Aaron Sanchez (from the FoodTV network) cookbook that was $16.99US and I laughed and cursed at them as I passed by the book. It's on sale today! It's bargain-basement priced, too. Get it (if you're interested) before whoever at Amazon sobers up and realizes that they made a mistake. Aaron Sanchez's "Simple Food, Big Flavor: Unforgettable Mexican-Inspired Recipes from My Kitchen to Yours" Kindle Edition $.99US And another cookbook (not related to Aaron) on sale that had good reviews: "Cooking with Loula: Greek Recipes from My Family to Yours" Kindle Edition $2.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  11. I think it's interesting that the PBS station I receive on cable had the "Milk Street" cooking show last season. But not this season. They switched back to "Cook's Country". Sorry, Chris!
  12. One from my BookBub email this morning: "Real Food Slow Cooker Suppers: Easy, Family-Friendly Recipes from Scratch" Kindle Edition $1.99US The recipes are supposed to be "from scratch" recipes, so no canned soups, etc. Too bad we can't see an index of recipes... I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  13. From this afternoon's perusal: "Das German Cookbook: Schnitzel, Bratwurst, Strudel and other German Classics" Kindle Edition $2.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  14. From this morning's BookBub email: "Jam Session: A Fruit-Preserving Handbook" Kindle Edition $1.99US Using the "Look Inside" feature you can see the fruit and recipes are broken down by season. Note this book is currently un-reviewed, if there's such a word. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.

Edited to add: Checking my Amazon links in my post from yesterday, It seems as if about half of the cookbooks I posted yesterday are no longer on sale. My apologies if anyone is disappointed.
  24.
