I stepped outside and shook my fist towards Publix somewhere on the east coast for being late with this recall. I'm not sure they saw it.

My Costco also sells just the cooked meat from the rotisserie chickens. I forget the cost but I believe it's a 2-pound package. When I get it home I just cut it in half and throw them in the freezer. Then when I need chicken meat for enchiladas, pot pies, stews, etc, I just take out one of the halves and let it thaw. Easy peasy. When buying a whole rotisserie chicken where you just want the meat, the trick is to remove the meat from the still-warm bird (after you've washed your hands, of course). If you refrigerate the chicken, the meat will stick like glue to the bones.

Costco is making sure their major loss leader, their rotisserie chicken, has a secure future. "It's only $4.99. But Costco's rotisserie chicken comes at a huge price" It's a lengthy read but I found it fascinating to learn of the steps they are taking to make sure the price remains unchanged and to cut out the middleman/persons and become directly involved in growing their own chickens. I can attest that I am a fan of their rotisserie chicken and won't even look at the rotisserie chickens in my local grocery stores (too small, for too much money). I thought it was also interesting that one of the reasons for this Costco move into chicken "farming" came about because they had trouble sourcing large enough birds for their stores. Which, in turn, speaks about where the larger birds were being directed by the chicken companies. Anyone else a fan of their rotisserie chickens?

This is an expansion of the previously mentioned recall by the USDA: "Tip Top Poultry, Inc. Recalls Ready-To-Eat Poultry Products Due to Possible Listeria Contamination" There is a linked-to list of vendors who may have sold the tainted meat in question. In this article about the same recall, they mention some of the vendors: "Chicken sold at major retailers recalled"

My mom passed away about two years ago. I have an older brother who told us not to worry...that he and wife would host the holiday dinners at their home. Last year at our first Thanksgiving dinner without my mom, he told me they weren't going to make stuffing /dressing because they liked StoveTop Stuffing and would be making that instead of the "real" stuff. This year he told me they weren't going to roast a whole turkey for Thanksgiving. He said "No one eats the dark meat so it just gets wasted." He said they're going to buy one of those fully cooked turkey breasts that Costco sells and heat that up instead. What he neglected to mention is that without a turkey carcass, there won't be any Turkey Noodle Soup made after Thanksgiving. My mom would make a veritable vat of Turkey Noodle Soup from the carcass and turkey meat leftovers. She'd portion it out into giant glass jars that she would freeze. She would foist the jars of soup onto us, which we all loved getting, when we left her home after a visit. So no carcass means no more Turkey Noodle Soup. What's next? Instant mashed potatoes?

Thank you for posting the links. But I keep coming back to the main issue which led to my post: Is that fire-retardant chemical still being used in farmed salmon feed? Or do all current salmon farms use feed that no longer contains such chemicals? I've been buying the wild-caught salmon at Costco which gets very expensive and the farm-raised salmon isn't quite as pricey. Thanks for your feedback.

This is an interesting move on Amazon's part. i don't think there's a paywall... "Amazon’s Grocery-Store Plan Moves Ahead With Los Angeles Leases" It looks like the intended customer of these new grocery stores won't "eat" (pun not intended) into Whole Food's customer base since the new stores seem to focus on ready-made meals/food. And Los Angeles is just the first city for these new stores. Amazon plans on opening more of these new stores in major cities across the US.

I am reviving this ancient discussion to ask about the current state of farmed salmon. Originally, the biggest issue was the fish feed for the farmed salmon contained the same chemical used in making clothing fire-retardant. The gist was that you didn't want to eat the farmed salmon because of this chemical/additive (the additive also helped to give the farmed salmon the same distinctive pink flesh as their wild counterparts). But now I keep hearing people talking about how great farmed salmon is. So was the feed changed? Is that chemical eliminated from the salmon diet? Is farmed salmon now safe to eat? Let's discuss...

"The Complete Kitchen Garden: An Inspired Collection of Garden Designs & 100 Seasonal Recipes" Kindle Edition $1.99US This is an odd recipe book. It discusses seasonal gardens and then has recipes using the ingredients from those gardens. I hope the same happens here. My local Costco completely dropped the BBQ Beef sandwich which I loved (big enough for two meals or one meal for two people).
