  9. I have a friend who is growing pumpkins. She feeds the pumpkin to her dog. She says you have to leave them on the vine until they turn 100% orange (they don't ripen any further once picked). She also said pumpkin farmers will pick the pumpkins and then store them away to "harden". When first picked, they're surprisingly tender and can bruise easily. After storage they can sit out for a while (like what you see in grocery stores at Halloween) which made them ideal for early farmers here in the US. They could be stored away in the root cellars for future meals. I will keep my fingers crossed for your pumpkin harvest.
  10. About 50 years ago, my Paternal Grandmother came out from Indiana and stayed with us in San Diego. We still have the photo of her standing barefoot on the beach as the tide came in. It was the first time she had ever seen the Pacific Ocean. While she was visiting she showed my mom how to make egg noodles from scratch. I still remember our kitchen table covered entirely with waxed paper and with the sliced egg noodles and lots of flour. I don't recall my mom ever making them by herself after that. Decades later my mom would buy Grandma brand frozen egg noodles in the freezer section of the grocery store for her turkey noodle soup after Thanksgiving. Close enough, I guess.
  11. The local Walmart Neighborhood Grocery Store (they really have to come up with a shorter name) carries the low sodium Mary Kitchen Corned Beef Hash. I prefer the regular Mary Kitchen Corned Beef Hash. As someone else mentioned, they also have a Sausage Hash, too, though I haven't tried that, yet. I also prefer a nice crust on my corned beef hash. I cook mine in a Calphalon non-stick skillet and it gives it a nice crust.

  15. I think in the past it was easier to source chicken stock or to make your own which may be why so many French Onion Soup recipes call for chicken stock. In today's culinary world, beef stock is now easy to find and source, as well. Plus, it's your dang kitchen, use whatever stock rocks your world, naysayers be damned.

  21. I guess we're lucky here in Bakersfield because we have the Pyrenee's French Bakery. I've never been to the bakery's actual store (no pastries sold there, just bread) because their bread can be found in most of the local grocery stores. I had a co-worker who always bought their sliced sourdough sandwich loafs because the ingredient list is something like "Flour, water, yeast, salt". No additives or preservatives. If you look at their baguettes (click) they're not the ling skinny baguettes one thinks of from France. They're a little bit thicker. I think there's a Basque influence at work there.

You know how when you use your food processor sometimes the veggie you're slicing shifts in the feed tube and instead of a slice you get something that's more cut on the bias/diagonal? I made spaghetti and meatballs last night using Paul Newman's "Italian Sausage & Peppers Pasta Sauce". I opened the jar and poured the sauce into a glass bowl to heat it up in the microwave, and out of the jar plopped nice big chunks of onion and huge slices of sausage. I know it's not meant to be sliced this way but I'm not complaining. In fact I'm thinking about going back to the store where I bought it and buying more jars of that sauce in hopes that more of the jars in that shipment have chunky sauce, as well. I know, I know...I need to get out more.
  23. It's a little early to post this but what the heck... "Hershey’s Will Have A Ton Of New Halloween Candy This Year Including Reese’s Cups With Green Creme"
