  1. A mixed bag this afternoon: "Martha's Vineyard Cookbook: Over 250 Recipes And Lore From A Bountiful Island" Kindle Edition $0.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature and scroll down to see some recipes. Oddly, they put the list of ingredients over a wood-textured background...clarity may be an issue to some. "Ama: A Modern Tex-Mex Kitchen" Kindle Edition $2.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the list of recipes and scroll down to see some recipes. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  2. DBS Sunday Morning did a short profile on the chef: Here is the URL for those who can't view the video: https://youtu.be/GnOQML6iZ0k
  3. There's no official word from Amazon but media leaks are suggesting that Prime Day will be October 13th this year.
  4. One thing I forgot to mention! This past weekend I shopped at the Walmart Neighborhood Grocery Store near me and I think they think the worst of the Pandemic is over. The entrance to the store wasn't roped off (you no longer had to get in a line to enter the store). The directional arrows on the floor of each aisle, telling shoppers which way to go up or down the aisle, were gone (a lot of the customers ignored the signs anyway so what was the point?). They did have a sign on the shelf of the Lysol-type disinfectant spray (can't recall the odd brand name) telling customers only one can of disinfectant per person and that hoarders would not be allowed to hoard the disinfectant spray. A lot of cleaning supplies were still MIA (no Clorox Wipes, etc.) and the paper towel section was hit or miss. But everything else seemed to be stocked. Things may be looking up...

    Dinner 2020

An amazing work of art! The 'Maters are gorgeous. Your deconstructed BLT with a Mat 'O' Bacon is simply stunning. I would not share that Mat 'O' Bacon with a single soul.
  6. California voters somehow voted to do away with those free plastic bags grocery stores used to bag our groceries in. They're happy to sell us new recyclable bags. So we recycle the new recyclable bags by taking them to the grocery store every time we shop to be used to hold our new groceries. Except, thanks to the Pandemic, the cashiers in the grocery stores won't touch them, fearing the Coronavirus is all over them (even though a lot of the cashiers are wearing disposable plastic gloves). So you either have to bag your own groceries now in the recyclable bags you brought (after paying how much for my groceries?!), or the cashier will be happy to sell you new plastic bags that they will touch and they will put your groceries inside. Whatta scam. And then the cashier takes the yellow squash I had in a plastic produce bag with her COVID-covered plastic gloved hand so she can weigh the squash on the scale at the register. I was speechless. I said nothing and went home and scrubbed that squash as if it were contaminated. So they won't touch my recyclable bags but they will be happy to touch all of my produce? It boggles my mind. She's wearing gloves....for goodness sake, why can't she pack my groceries in the bags I brought and then throw away the gloves and put new ones on for the next customer? Because gloves cost money and the store doesn't want them to throw the gloves away after each customer (like they do at the Subway sandwich chain). This hurts my brain.
  7. Found at the grocery store this weekend...Lay's Kettle Cooked Beer Cheese flavor potato chips (can't even locate them on the Lay's web site). Meh. When I first started eating them, I kept waiting to taste the beer flavor...it never asserted itself. Overall, the chip didn't taste bad, it just didn't taste like beer cheese.
  8. "Colorado couple's 20-year search for extinct fruit finally pays off" A search for a thought-to-be-extinct Colorado apple bears literal fruit. To those who go to read the article, keep scrolling down. I thought the article was ended only to find more of it further down the page, then more further down the page and so on. Odd format.
  9. Thanks. The Amazon link to the ecookbook is here (click).
  10. No way no how. They need to do a survey to find out how much Halloween candy never makes it to Halloween (being eaten before the holiday). Guilty!
  11. Oreo Cookies

"Gingerbread Oreos Are Available RIGHT NOW" I thought it was far too early for Starbucks to bring back Pumpkin Spice. It's way too early for Gingerbread.
  13. My local Walmart grocery store has been slowly taking over the "Back to School" section with Halloween candy. Last week it was a third of the display area and now it's at least half of the area. So much for Back to School. And I have to report that the Fun Size Snickers I bought and put out at work didn't last more than an hour. I am surrounded by Plebeians! And hungry Plebeians, at that.
  14. I noticed high sodium on a lot of TJ's frozen products. I looked at their Asian-themed foods (Fried Rice, for example) and the sodium was shockingly high. I had a friend who observed sodium content years before it was the thing to do, and she said someday we're all going to explode from the sodium in our food.
  15. Now I freely admit I do eat some hot dogs with mustard especially the bratwurst variety, but I prefer ketchup on my hot dogs. When we were kids and my mom had her Ladies Night Out (bowling league, usually), my dad would literally drive through the local Der Wienerschnitzel (back before they dropped the "Der") because the drive-through was smack in the middle of the restaurant building...one of those still exists in Pacific Beach down in San Diego. Anyway he would buy bags full of their Mustard Dogs and that was our dinner. No starch, no veg with dinner...just Mustard Dogs. We loved it and ate our fill. Proof that I have eaten mustard on hot dogs.
  16. After my mom passed, no one wanted her "good" china because the dinner plates were perfectly flat. How do you put gravy on your mashed potatoes without worrying about the gravy pouring over the side of the plate? We learned to put the mashed potatoes dead center on the plate and pile everything else around it like a dam to keep the gravy at bay. I also liked to eat my salad last, as well. Restaurants just ruin it by serving the salad as the first course. Heathens! Let's also veer off into related dining territory by saying I like ketchup on my hot dogs.* So there! *I remembered while grocery shopping last week that as kids, we didn't eat much fish except for the typical fish sticks. I put ketchup on those, as well.
  17. "It's hard to grow vegetables in this mountain town. Then this farmer had an idea" Vertical farming isn't a new concept. But that they're able to employ those who need employment is an added bonus. I would love to see the next step mentioned in the article about the bigger "vertical farm" bring built in Maine. It's a great idea.
  18. "Taco Bell Is Getting Its Own Wine to Pair with Chalupas" Taco Bell trying to up its game.
  19. Currently snacking on Lays Ruffle Double Crunch Zesty Cheddar (click) potato chips. They're insanely crunchy. Plus, they seem to have the littlest of spiciness to them. Guess that's the "Zesty" part, go figure.

    Rosh Hashana

I have friends who will get the turkey breast from Costco instead of a whole bird. No thighs or drumsticks...but no bones either. It comes fully cooked. You can heat it up, or just open the package and slice it for sandwiches.

    Making Tamales

I swear someone from CBS Sunday Morning must be reading eGullet. I found this video posted on YouTube this morning: "Tamales, a Christmastime tradition" Here is the URL for those who can't view the video: https://youtu.be/qhgQL_RaPDI

  25. Please be careful with this combo of a garlic clove in olive oil. It can be a thriving environment for botulism. Read more info here (click).
