  1. omg now I have to make one!!
  2. rinse them well then toss them with chopped up kimchee some sesame oil and toasted sesame seeds they are wonderful in cold Asian ..mainly Korean in my opinion ..side dishes you can also buy the Yam Cake (same stuff just in a block shape) and slice it making the same dish as I mentioned above there are almost no carbs in it I think
  3. try looking for "hedgehog" cake and see I found this recipe that sounds sort of what you are looking for ..I know what you mean it is a very good cake and I think it is commonly called "hedgehog" instead of "porcupine" ..but I could be wrong check it out and see http://www.themediadrome.com/content/recip...dgehog_cake.htm good luck!
  4. I am so happy to say I live in a town where huge wild looking and unusual ..unique gardens are par not a concern! I can not imagine anyone knocking at my door to complain about my yard!!! I would just ask them to grab a shovel and help me then!!!! I love the idea of tomatoes!!! I think it would be too late for mine now but next year I want to try this ... I used bamboo I had dried and made cages out of them and they look like they are not going to hold up already ... my cherries are ripening nicely now and do get picked at by the birds and I suppose I could put a net over them ..but there are always plenty so I dont mind sharing strawberries are bursting and also getting pecked at .. my plums all fell off!!! I have no idea why??? they seemed to start fine then just dropped it is a five way plum figs are going crazy the tree is huge suddenly! making stuffed vine leaves this week I long for my work week to end (my Friday is tomorrow!) so I can get out there and see what is happening .. there hummingbirds everywhere I had Anna's winter over in my bamboo and then they migratied off and now the rufus are pinging all over the place tanking up for babies I guess... and I have two tiny baby rabbits in my herb garden ..they love the weeds and leave my herbs alone!!! so far anyway!!!!
  5. I have several really horrible books ..but embarassing ...hmmmm interesting subject ..I am going to stand in front of the shelves of cookbooks lining my hallway when I get off work today.. and see what books exactly make me blush with embarassment I will report back to you on this!
  6. Thanks to you all for your help ..we had a fantastic time! went here so thanks Sam Salmon! http://www.soulecreeklodge.com lodging was perfect (we stayed in a yurt) ..great views..lots of wildlife ...food was really good!!! .. and the folks that run the lodge have a great eye for detail and comfort ..so the time just drifted past us......it was a wonderful and very badly needed break! btw.. the weather was a bit chilly to go naked on a beach even for a couple of sturdy old hippies!!! ..maybe next time when it is warmer we can head that way! so much to see in life and so few vacation days! I vote for more recreation less work myself!!! thanks so much to all of you again!
  7. I have a huge amt of empathy for you during this sad time... having lost a dear friend to obesity related illness ...she developed diabetes at 28 from obesity and then in her 30's developed congestive heart failure..by her mid 50's she had alreadly lost part of her feet and was forced into retirement... then at 58 my son found her ..crushing...so I completely understand ..I am a nurse and our roles together became more like care taker and patient instead of friends...I was went from angry to sad so often both before she passed and after ..still even I get moments where I just want to yell at her to come back and try again!!! anyway my heart goes out to you ..there is a fine line in life and one I try to just walk on ...not always gracefully mind you hugs to you
  8. I won prize money in a contest for coming up with this cocktail! it is really good!!! Sake Plum Cocktail Pour 1/4 cup each sake, plum wine and vodka into a 3-cup cocktail shaker filled with ice. Add 1 thin slice (the size of a quarter) fresh ginger. Shake until drink is well chilled, about 20 seconds. Strain into martini glasses. Garnish each glass rim with a thin slice of crystallized ginger and a tiny wedge of lime.
  9. put your lemons in a pot and then pour boiling waer over them and let them just set a few min before rincing them off with warm water this not only seems to get the wax off but when you use the rind the oils release very easily
  10. I am going to make this for my husband's 50th birthday lunch tomorrow serve it with a nice microbrew and an automatic defibrillator ..he will love it!!!!
  11. I sooo understand and am happy with you right now remembering ..with each one of my kids I had a similar moment where we were browsing for something good and the answer was "YUM Korean Food for lunch!!!! " and they were bouncing in the seats!!!! with friends!!!! it is such a nice moment!!! congratulations!!!
  12. I am going to make some lamb larb today! thanks so much for those fantastic larb making pictures! I can see some ideas in my method of making this dish that for sure I am going to change ...I have not made this in ages ...I am going to for sure sprinkle water on my rice hen I roast it and see how that works and I am going to try balling the meat this time after I grind it ....I like the idea of the texture I stopped at the SE Asian market near my work yesterday and picked all the things up I needed (I love this market it is the one place you can still fill a grocery bag full of fresh produce for less than $10!!!) ...both lamb and goat are fantastic larb meats...they go brilliantly with the flavors of the dish..... lime, chiles herbs ect ..with lamb or goat are perfect so if you have never tried it and love lamb and larb you should...just dont say it too often out loud because it does kind of sound strange "lamb larb" the other red meats!!! I am sorry I have not had time to read the entire thread so if someone else mentioned lamb or goat in larb then I am agreeing with you!!!
  13. rich chocolate pudding from scratch banana cream pie fresh blackberry crisp wit minted whipped cream I need breakfast now ...
  14. ok this is kind of the same but a differing story on the same subject..I bought a frozen food from Trader Joes...both my husband and I got so violently ill with in two hours of eating it I knew it was this stuff in a bag we had consumed because it was the only thing we had eaten in at least a day that was the same ....I pulled the bag out of the trash and washed it put it in a ziploc bag.and took it back to the store and told them how sick we got..they gave us back our money took our name and address and the bag ... I am such a dork ..and considering I am a nurse I should have known better!!! why on earth did I wash the bag?????? when they sent it back to the company no one could test it for anything!!! The company sent a long letter explaining the issue of the clean bag and why it did not serve them any purpose...I felt like an idiot after all ..I do know about germs and soap duh!!!! lesson ..if you get sick on frozen food they want the bag back dirty so they can test it! I am sure that is obvious to anyone but me at that time .... glad you got at least a coupon for the dough ball!!!
  15. OH my garden is stunning right now ..the flowers are bursting! The herbs are all blooming as well so there are tons of hummingbirds, butterflies and bee's everywhere! my strawberries are loaded with nice sized green berries fig tree full of figs Asian pears have plum sized fruits now plums are doing pretty good as well rhubarb ..the whole hill on the side of my house is covered my young cherry tree became an appetizer to a huge buck and I am hoping it will survive currents, gooseberries, grapes ..all doing wonderfully this is a good year for everything in my yard so far... so good I got brave and put in tomatoes and peppers..something I Have never had luck with where I live ....
  16. I adore crab ...and have never once tasted what I would consider a "good" crabcake...people have told me "oh they have the best crabcakes around" so I order one and I am telling you ....so far I just dont think I like crab treated like that... and I agree about the bell pepper what is that anyway?? it tastes horrbile with crab!!! I know there are good crab cakes out there...otherwise why would they be so popular... personally I have not tried one I may however have to go for a spin over to Poulsbo and check the one mentioned about out!
  17. thanks you guys I know the area in Tukwilla so I will drive by on my way to Seattle and hopefully fine what I am looking for ..then if no luck the Central district ..I heard a girl I used to work with at Harborview just opened one with her sister so maybe that will pan out as well. thanks again
  18. I used to work at Harborview and had a couple of markets in Seattle where I liked to shop. The Halal markets always had some goat and lots of other things I could not find anywhere else... They are gone now the stores I know..so...do you know please where the Ethiopian or Somali markets are? are theye any in the Downtown area? thanks in advance for any advice
  19. YES do it!!! ..I make this all the time!!! .. and it is wonderful for a large event !! do two kinds of meat pork and chicken one hot one mild and some dahl ...put them all in warming trays...then put the condiments out in bowlsyou can serve it with warmed toasted tortillas and condiments like, chopped cilantro, limes, tarmarind chutney, mint chutney, yogurt with cucumber (riata) ...roasted veggies...for family dinner just the meat some warm tortillas and a tomato cucumber riata is all you need! . ....everyone loves it ...we jokingly refer to it as vindaloo vieja you can do this completely veg with lentels instead of meat I believe this will be what we are having this weekend thanks for the thread!
  20. Carrot halvah? has it been mentioned? also I coincidently made a Muslim Bean pie yesterday so if you have not tried one they are really good
  21. hmmmm I dont prepare them often but when I do my husband loves them left whole, soaked overnight in buttermilk and sliced onions (the same way I do chicken I am going to fry...then dipped in seasoned flour and flash fried until crispy ..that is all I never trim/parboil or do anything else special ..just the soaking and I am not sure that is important but my husband swears they are great! ..I have nothing to compare it to as I am not out of my mind over them...
  22. I went on a curry cooking binge a few years ago and cooked my way through the The Hamlyn Curry Cookbook by Meera Taneja now if you want a solid curry cookbook that has a taste of various curries from around the world, is easy to follow with good results...I just looked on Amazon and they have it for $4.95 used! It was my first real curry book with recipes! I had grown up cooking curries but never used a book and I sure used this one I cooked every single recipe in it front to back and made so many notes I wonder what someone will think when they inherit it!!! I have almost cooked my way through quite a few books including some of the Moosewood books years ago ...a couple of the Frugal Gourmet (Jeff Smith) books Three Ancient Cuisines and nearly made it through cooking each recipe in his Our Immigrant Ancestors my friend and I did accomplish this book together but I can not take credit for making all the recipes myself...of course I tried a couple of Julia books and some Jaques Pepin...Even thought I would attempt The Joy of Cooking....I am still working on that never quite made it though them to be able to say I cooked my way through every recipe ..but I sure did with that Curry book ..I have since purchased or been given many curry books (I am a curry whore no doubt about it I will curry anything anytime!!!) but none quite did it like this one ..it was the right book at the right time for the right cooking binge!
  23. here is a pic of the inexpensive...diffuses heat perfectly and makes perfect rice pot it is cast aluminium ( I have found this in most Mexican and Caribbean markets and it never was over $10)
