Peach Festival in Janghowon, Korea
Soup replied to a topic in Elsewhere in Asia/Pacific: Cooking & Baking
These pictures are great. Really picked me up on anotherwise bad monday. As a child, I used to love Bundagee (they are silk worm Larvee) and the snails, I had them for the first time on my last trip to korea. very little meat but the juice is outstanding. -
It seem more prevalent but I had this at TenPehn (DC pan asian place) this past thursday. Before the meal started they gave us gazpacho in a shot glass. It was amazing. I should have stop the meal there unfortunately.

I used to buy the tastee brand stuff at TJ's. That is until i read the salt content. I no longer to that and cook stuff from scratch. I do miss the convienance and they were all that bad. Soup

Not to deviate but ... If you have not tried a Korean pear, I would recommend that you give it a try. I think we are heading into that season. The korean pear is unlike other western pears. They are round, brown, very crisp and juicy. I buy mine in a box and they cost be about $25 bucks. You get 12 or so individually wrapped pears. They are amazing.

I do green two way mainly. Washing greens and dry well (I use a salad spinner). Cast iron pan scorching hot. quickly toss the greens. then add garlic. I then add blk pepper and soy or go with oyster sauce. Come out pretty good. I also toss in the stemmy parts first (about 30 seconds) then add the leafy parts. Help cook them evenly. I get what every leaf green chinese veggies are on sale or look the freshest.

There are fish stew that use the whole fish including the head. As a kid, I remember that getting the eye from the fish stew was something special. I don't particularly remember the taste but the texture was good. Very nice. Fish head curry or Mae Un Tang (spicy korean fish stew) are my favorite ways to eat them these days. My favorite is Cod (head). Yum.

welcome to reston/great falls. What kind of places are you looking for? You have some great options in all types of foods. Two quick places I really like (both very cheap) are Minerva (I think the best indian in DC but other will argue) and SBC cafe in the same shopping center has the best roast beef sandwich in town. In Tyson's Corner across from the hummer dealer is Shamshimery (sp?). Really great persian food. you might also check out two websites: Chowhound and google tyler cowen lone resturant critic. Tyler has a very good website about great ethic places around DC Soup

Voicing displeasure with the embassy might be cathartic but, with an eye toward future international travel and whatever peril may ensue, it's hardly in anyone's best interest to be overly critical. Heaven forbid he finds himself in harm's way again, he wouldn't get moved up on the evacuation priority list is he's recognized as "that guy who launched a nationally televised screed against the Beirut embassy." Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. ← I think his honest "take no prison" attitute toward how he presenting his views are one of the core characteristics that I think people like. I hardly think he or anyone else gets move on the "evac priority list" because any remarks about his experience. I have to believe professionalism would prevail.

Ditto on the show last nights. One thing I really like was the slight departure from the regular format. He did a lot more commentary before we saw the footage/shot and after. Just him and the camera. I not sure if they were trying to fill air time but it worked for me. I hope he does more of this in other episode. I was a bit surprise that he seems to skim over his experience in dealing with the american embassy. I also like the US Mexico border show. He seems to be closing out a lot of shows with a family meal (he did in Japan, Korea, Mexico and China). I think it speaks volumes to how he see where heart of cooking is. BTW, travel network should do a tony marathon.

made this last night and it came out pretty good. I didn't have the pickled veggies but it turned out great. It was the best of the dishes I made for dinner last night.

I haven't baken since spring (IT's been hot). I wanted to make some challah this weekend and I went to look for my yeast and my wife had put it in the freezer. Is it ruined? Soup -

Pictorial: Fried Rice Noodles with Beef, Dry Style
Soup replied to a topic in China: Cooking & Baking
made this dish today with a slight variation. Sauce remain the same but instead of beef, I used bunch of leftovers (i.e., shrimp, onion, red pepper, corn on the cob (minus the cob)). It turned out great. Thanks for the recipe. BTW, my kids loved it. Keep up the great posts. I think the next dish will be the shimp with superior soy sauce. Soup -
Having the picture is fantastic. I have however, not been able to located feremented chili bean sauce. I've found chili bean sauce. Are they one in the same? BTW, Which oyster sauce is the best. I've tried a lot (most are horrible) of varieties. I've currently settled on that's actually shown on this post because it was recommended by Ming Tsai on one of his shows. Pretty good but would love to hear from others.

I have a couple of tree in my yard (plum and apple). Every year I have to prune them but the disease hasn't been a problem. However, the fruit when it falls on my grass does make a mess. Go buy a peach tree, dig a large hole and plant. I also use fruit tree spike fertilizer. There is more work then regular trees but I love going out with the kids to pick fruit. It is really relaxing and fun. You could also try my parents method. Go up to your neighbors door and offer them some $ to pick the fruit off the tree. My parents do this with their neighbors pear trees every year.

I just saw this weeks episode (repeat but new for me) on montreal. The scene where the family is dining on raw seal has to be one of the most facinating food related TV I've ever seen. I got the sense of a sunday dinner meal except the meal was eaten on the kitchen floor (reminded me of steam crab meals at my house growing up) and that the meal was not only eaten raw but butchered right in front of everyone. Love it.

I use a mixture of brown rice and white japanese rice when cooking. I use about two table spoons of brown to a cup of white. I also soak the brown before adding it to the white in my rice cooker. Have any of you tried purple rice? I've been making it lately and my family loves it. I think more of a novelty. I use a cup and half of regular white janpanse rice and add two table spoonse of toasted korean sweet rice. The mixture when cooked comes out purple. Also adds a nice deep nutty flavor.

I've never come across an organ meat I didn't like until chicken gizzard. My parents use to make this and the texture really turned me off. Tough and rubbery. When it comes to chicken organs, its hard to beat the liver.

SBC cafe. One of the best sandwiches in DC. In the same plaza is possibly my favorite indian resturant in the DC region, Minerva. I think that location is a bit better than the fairfax location so I make the drive out. Yum. Go for lunch. I had this deep flied cauliflower dish that was covered in a spicy sauce last week (on the lunch buffet). It was amazing.

Just got back from Bmore today after 4 days. All the places around the inner harbor that I've eaten at (this time and in my previous trips) are mediocre at best. However, just a few blocks off the inner harbour is little italy. Not all the places are great but few of them I thought were pretty good. Vaccaro (sp?) for pastry is pretty good. The real find on this trip for me was greek town. you have to drive or cab there. Not within walking dist. We went to a resturant called somos (not sure I got the name exactly right) but you can ask the local resident where they'd like eat. Great food. Really inexpensive (thank goodness because they only take cash). Anyway, get your self to greektown. You won't be sorry. Also found some great hispanic hole in the walls a few blocks from fells point but I'm not sure I'd go there at night.

Thanks. I stop by and I get also get some food to go. BTW what they charge you?

I'm looking for some veal bones to make stock with. Any good sources of veal bones in Northern VA for stock making?

I think the best way to eat pork is in BBQ or in a suasage type form. But if you are looking for a different form of pork try Tongkatsu (janpanese version of chicken fried steak with pork). Good cut of pork (I've used loin, chop with the bone on, and parts of shoulder) and pound it out with to about 1/4 inch thick. Score the meat with a knife slightly so that it doesn't curl on you. Batter (flour, egg, panko bread crumb in that order) and deep fry until done. Sauce is made with 3 part wostershire and 1 part catsup. Panko (janpanese bread crumbs) is a key and using western bread crumbs doesn't yield great results for me. Just had it on sunday and my wife exclaim that this is her fav. pork dish. My kids eat this stuff up. SoUP
