  1. The Denny's in Ballard will be open, but the view is of the other customers. :)
  2. I tried out the Hi-Life in Ballard for lunch on Saturday. It's in the old Ballard Firehouse space and run by Chow Foods, who also own The Atlas, Jitterbug, Coastall Kitchen, etc. The menu, for the most part, is identical to the rest of the chain except they have a wood-fired pizza oven, which is what I went for. I had a pretty decent Caesar Salad to start then ordered the Pepperoni Pizza ($8). Is was pretty good, very thin and crispy crust, similiar to Palomino but maybe not quite as good. I will definately try them again, but will either order the margharita or Con Fungi pizzas (they had five or six different pizzas on the lunch menu).
  3. Chicken gizzards, dipped in pancake batter, deep fried, served with Tabasco and ketchup.
  4. I have enjoyed spaghetti sandwiches ever since I was a kid, (I'm 40). I like it hot, saucy, and meaty, scooped onto a piece of garlic toast, folded into the shape of a taco.
  5. Admin: split from the thread on Dr. Cocktail's book, Vintage Spirits & Forgotten Cocktails. Does the book include a BULL SHOT? 1 1/2 oz Vodka 1 dash Orange Juice 4 dashes Tabasco Sauce 1 dash Peppers 4 oz Beef Bouillon Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and shake well. Strain into a pint glass over ice, garnish with a twist of orange peel, and serve.
  6. I was hoping by going to the website I could check out their prices. I suspect a bowl of cereal will cost more than box and a quart of milk at the supermarket.
  7. Max & "Somebody's" Back Yard closed in Ballard, and, I think, Sushi Kuma in Wallingford closed (I didn't see it when I passedby on the bus, but I could be wrong).
  8. I went over to a friend's house for dinner this year so have no leftovers to enjoy (we had Coq Au Vin), but I'll add my version of the leftover Thanksgiving sandwich. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy wrapped in a flour tortilla and lightly fried. Serve with more hot gravy on top (though I guess you could put cranberry sauce on it if you like).
  9. For Ground Beef or Chicken Home-made Tacos: Pico Pica Hot Sauce For Carne Asada: Scorned Woman For Eggs: Jim Beam For Pizza: Tabasco For Shrimp & Jambalaya: Cajun Power
  10. So Fish, Did you give them a try?
  11. The Seattle P-I recommends it as a marinade or a brine for meat or fish.
  12. Matt's Famous Chili Dogs finally opened up next to the Neptune Theater. Looking at their prices I don't know if I'll ever go. I only like mustard on my hot dog and for $3.50 I can get enough fixins for at least a week's worth of lunch.
  13. I usually drink Stoli or Grey Goose (I'm not a big fan of Ketel One, Absolut, or Skyy). I'll have to give Pearl a try, but have any of you tried the following (I'd like your opinion before I buy): 42º Below Coroc Ultimat Stön
  14. My last meal would be as follows: (This meal would be proceeded by several deep bong hits!) Cocktail # 1-3: Grey Goose Dirty Martini w/Habanero Stuffed Olive Appetizers: Jumbo Prawn & King Crab Meat Cocktail Personal sized (6”), wood-fired Pepperoni, Sausage, and Mushroom Pizza Rainbow Roll Whole leaf Caesar Salad Cup of Clam Chowder from The Brooklyn Diner (Seattle) Cocktail #4: Malibu & Coke Entrée: 2” thick Prime, Dry-Aged Porterhouse Steak Maine Lobster Tail & Claws w/ drawn hickory butter Large Button Mushroom Sautéed w/ garlic, butter, and white wine Steamed Spinach Texas Toast Cottage Fries w/ Jim Beam Ketchup Cocktail #5: White Russian w/ coffee chaser Desert: Mexican Chocolate Cake with a White Cinnamon/Cayenne Frosting & Vanilla Ice Cream
  15. Grey Goose Dirty Martini (AKA a French James Bond) with two Jalapeno & Garlic stuffed Green Olives (and those are Tim's Cascade Wasabi Potato Chips in the back ground).
  16. I finally got to ty the Wasabi chips and boy are they tasty! I hope they decide to keep them around for awhile.

    Bland pot roast

I made pot roast out of beef shoulder the other night and it tasted wonderful.

    Bland pot roast

I would have added onions, garlic and Worcester sauce.
  19. Could you define again NY Style Pizza. I thought I knew what it was but am beginning to have my doubts.
  20. Semi related to what Kevin said, that because I hated my Grandmother's canned cranberry sauce and yam's as a kid, I am leary of giving the "real" things a chance. just give me meat, potatoes, stuffing, a buttery roll, and a green vegetable (but not creamed) and I am set until the pumpkin pie with Cool Whip!
  21. Is American Pie about "pie" or pizza, because I am looking for a good pizza cookbook with lots of color pictures?
  22. That's OK Mabeline, whenever a chain originates out of Seattle (Red Robin, Starbuck's, Nordstrom, Microsoft) the rest of the country hates them, but someone must be buying because they are all still in business. Some of my best friend's don't like Red Robin either, but they also don't usually eat hamburgers and fries because, IMO, they are food snobs. There are better (and cheaper) burgers in Seattle than Red Robin, bit it's the closest "above average" burger joint close to my work.
  23. Thanks Deborah! But please don’t give up. Each week I have looked forward to seeing your pictures and reading your opinion. I agree Pudge Brothers is not all that great, but there are other places I hope you try (before I do). I would still like your (or anyone’s) opinions on other delivery places like Stacia's, Amante's, Zeek's, Palermo’s, and Atlantic Street Pizza. As you are looking for something closely resembling your experience in NYC, I am looking for the something similar to the pizza that I fell in love with growing up in Lacey (WA), back in the late 60's/early 70's, from two places long closed; Luigi's Pizzeria in Lacey and Shakey's in Olympia. There I developed a taste for thin crisp crust, with the occasional air bubble that signifies a HOT oven; a tasty red sauce with just the right amount of garlic and oregano; a mozzarella that, when you take a slice, holds on to the rest of the pie for dear life but does not pull all your toppings and cheese off onto the table; and fresh tasty toppings, especially a sausage with the perfect amount of fennel seeds. I haven’t quite found it, so far, but have had very good pizza at Pazzo’s (right now my favorite), Tutta Bella, Palomino, Varlamos, Il Fornaio, and the Garage; and still have to try La Vita E’Bella (Belltown), Café Lago (Montlake), Santorini’s (Wedgewood), Wallingford Pizza House, Fremont Classic Pizzeria, Belltown Pizza, Luigi’s (near Fisherman’s Terminal), and Via Tribuani (the new place on Capitol Hill). I figure I can afford to go to one untried pizzeria a month (since I also have about a dozen sushi restaurants still to try) and will report my findings (and take pictures).
  24. I confes I go to Taco Bell about three times a week because it's next to my dialysis center and I'm thankfull for their new Mega Meal menu, especially when I'm hungry and broke. Their Bean Burrito Especial (just a bigger version of their regular bean & cheese burrito) is about $1.25 and weighs about 8 ounces (which is about a pound or so less than Taco Del Mar's) so it's not as obscene as you think. We don't have Hardee's or Carl's Jr. in Seattle, but we are the home of Red Robin and the Monster Burger, which is two 1/2 pound patties and all the fixings you want.
  25. I could tell you where to get good Pho or Udon, but I usually don't go out for soup. There is Nana's Soup House on Ne 55th St, and Soup Daddy's on Occidental, but I can't vouch for either.
