Keith Floyd on Fill-in-the-Blank

The Travel Channel has been showing old Keith Floyd shows during the day, which Tivo has been nice enough to corral. Many of them I first saw (in repeat already then, I imagine) sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s. They are brutally edited in places, but still so worthwhile.

I find Floyd charming and disarming, and very inspiring--he can really cook. I never grill a sardine without thinking of him fondly, to this day. I got his Far Flung Floyd, Floyd on Fish, Floyd on France, and Floyd on Spain back then, and seeing other shows reminds me I should get the rest of his books, too.

Floyd fans can find some earlier eG Floyd topics here, here, and here. And here's Floyd's own home page

Thanks, Prscilla. I am an old Floyd fan. I still have allot of those old shows on video. I still think he stands out in personality and cooking ability from the "celebrity" chefs of today. Woods

Saw a couple of good ones this week, from the "Floyd Around the Med" series, which I hadn't seen before. The dishes he cooked in Greece, in particular, were very inspiring, an almagam of local Greek ingredients and Floyd cuisine.

I have always liked how he brings his own sensibility and talent to the dishes he cooks, rather than striving for mere reproduction or putative 100% authenticity, an overrated if not bankrupt concept.

And, according to the Travel Channel, there's more to come, as Floyd Around the Med winds down it's to be followed by Floyd on Africa, which I have not seen, and, another unseen to look forward to, Floyd Uncorked! Looks like Floyd on Spain begins the last day of May, too.

So yay for all that. Here's hoping they just roll through his entire catalogue.

Here's hoping they roll out some of the classics, but the "Around the Med" series is a recent production for Channel 5, not the BBC "Floyd on (insert location here)".

Ya, checking his website I see that "Around the Med" is pretty new -- 2001.

What is Channel 5?

Channel 5 (who now like to be called just "Five") is one of the commerical TV channels in the UK, which veers wildly from showing what has been described as soft-porn to flirting with showing decent SciFi shows, but then consigning the latter to the small hours of the morning because they don't get enough viewers...

Presumably their shows with Keith Floyd were during a phase where they tried to do "culture"? :unsure:

For those in the UK, Sky Travel and Sky Three (on Freeview) also show the various Floyd programs from time to time.

My husband has told me about Floyd for years- he used to watch him when he was younger, and was a very big influence upon catching his interest in cooking today. I'd never heard of him before.

I was never able to find any of the episodes available on DVD, but just recently, saw a few shows on the Travel Channel. Apparently, much later than the eGullet folk!

At any rate- why is there no further information on him? Why is there no way to get his old episodes? Why can't I get a current Floyd fix?!?

I'm watching him in Umbria right now, and just love him. The enthusiasm. The cheerful chatter. The wine-drinking.

I want more. :)

Only ever saw one episode -- I'm fairly certain it was Floyd on France, where he jumps out of the bus and starts pilfering veggies from a field to cook a local dish for the farmhands. Looked like a very honest, and fun show.

I heard of an episode he supposedly did on Australia, when they got rained in towards the end, and hadn't done any bbq yet. So in desperation, Floyd started grilling in the hotel room and set off the fire alarms. Firemen arrived and were initially fairly aggrevated, but eventually Floyd settled them down with some good grub. Or so I heard.

I'd love to watch some more of his stuff...

The Travel Channel has been showing a lot of his shows recently; Floyd on Italy, Floyd on Spain, Floyd on Wine (French only) and I think a saw a couple of African shows. I hadn't seen him in many years. I thought the best of the current crop of shows was the wine series, in which he has a sidekick wine expert who plays the straight man and I thought the combo worked quite well.

Keith Floyd’s Cookery Theatre Dates

Remaining Programme for 2007

    * November 13th, 15th, 20th 22nd

    * December 4th, 5th

On the evening of your arrival, enjoy a drink with Floyd, followed by Linthwaite’s own Chef’s 4 course dinner. (There will be a Captain’s table for anyone on their own, or if you simply want to be eating with others.) The following morning after a hearty Cumbrian breakfast, Keith’s Cookery Theatre will start around 10 a.m. and finish at 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Lunch is included, and of course much of that will be trying what’s been cooked (you’ll also be able to taste throughout the demonstration.) In the evening enjoy another Linthwaite dinner, and then the following morning depart refreshed and more knowledgeable!

Wish I knew about this like 3 months ago. Think it would of been worth the trip over the pond.

Thank you Priscilla for the information about Floyd,

About 25 years ago, I had pneumonia and spotted Floyd on the Discovery Channel performing ribald, culinary wonders on location. I was sad at recovering after only two weeks of Floyd's adventures.

He may have been the inspiration for Borat, Jackass and any number of reality TV shows. It was alcohol laced, food porn with equal accents on all three.

I will never forget him invading a Brittany kitchen unannounced and leering and lunging at the chef as she bent over to check the food in the oven.

It will be fun.

Tim
