Good Australia reds (cabernet sauvignon) + white

Visitor looking to bring home 2 bottles. Unfortunately I won't have time to go to the wineries... is Sydney strictly regulated as we are here or will I be able to pick up wine from just about anywhere?

I'm bringing home 1 red and 1 white (no preferences for the white), mid-range prices (approx $20-$100)

You should have no trouble purchasing wine in general, but you may have to look a little harder to seek out some interesting bottles. I'll put in a plug for two of the wines from our region: Clonakilla Shiraz/Viogner, and the harder-to-find Lark Hill Chardonnay.

You should look at the some regional goodies such as Eden Valley Riesling, Hunter Semillon, Barosa Shiraz, Tasmanian Pinot Noir, and Western Australian or Coonawarra Cabernet. Way too many wines to recommend and easy to find all over Sydney in the bottle shops and fine wine merchants.

The Hunter Valley is only 2 hours way by car if you can find the time....well worth it!

Where in Sydney will you be? As previous posters have suggested, there are far too many possibilities, but head into Five Ways Cellars in Paddington and they'll get you set up right.

Great suggestions. If you spot the single vineyard Rieslings from Henschke, they are well worth grabbing. They are mid range but very well made.

The trick will be to find the really interesting stuff

Whatever you do - don't buy it at the airport!

www.winepros.com will give you a good indication of what is hot etc and an entree into what variety there is...

There are a number of very good retailers around Sydney - if you are in town on a Tuesday the Sydney Morning Herald supplement Good Living will have ads for most of the specialist cellars - and most have tastings

In relation to cabernet - the best cabernets for the current vintage release (2001-2002) are (according to Halliday) to be found from:

Margaret River (WA)

Coonawarra (SA)

Yarra Valley (Vic)

Barossa (SA)

From personal experience I can say that the Yarra Yarra Reserve (yarra valley) 2002 is fantastic Halliday rated it 96/100

If you are looking for aged wines, try some of the auction houses (they'll be in the ads section also) and they do sell older wines direct
