Where are the best places in the city that offer a menu, a bar, and a wireless connection?

I need mobile office options all over town. Any ideas?

I like Bacchus, as I've mentioned before. There's also SOMA.

I guess the great thing about wifi is almost nobody encypts their internet so you can get free internet in alot of locations  I know the Irish Heather has "fatport" access but you do need to suscribe to it. On the otherhand if you sit in the garden conservatory you can get free access from a nearby cafe

Cheers,

Stephen

Benny's Bagels has it. Pints are $2.75, the food's better than you'd think (big ups to the Reuben, hearty soups & the Benny's Benedict), and there are plenty of nooks and crannies where you can park yourself and type away.

andrew you've inspired me.

We'll put it in at Century. You can come in and 'work' whenever you want.

I'll have the cards ready.

Kolachy Shop has it. Just returned with a belly full of bacon dog.

Just learned Opus has it. Elysian Cafe, too. I've only just bought a laptop this month, so I'm still trying to figure out how it works fatport, WEP, passwords, pay-to-play, et cetera. I took a bus the other day and opened up the puter to listen to music as it weaved through Georgia traffic. The thing went crazy. TD signal, then Hotel Vancouver, then someone's apartment....hilarious.

At my neighbourhood Delany's I can pick up the signal from a restaurant across the street and an architecture firm up the way. You feel like a bit of a thief, but there it is. I really like Bacchus because of the atmosphere, and it's nice having a cold glass of Chard while abusing the English language.

Thanks for your responses so far. Please keep 'em coming.

How much does Bacchus charge to use their wireless?

And then there's the Vancouver WiFi Mug, a wiki focusing on Lower Mainland coffee shops and eateries offering free WiFi. The majority of these aren't licensed, but you may hit upon a gem or two.

Have the details about Century been revealed anywhere around here? Enquiring minds want to know.

Since Sean is likely eye high in City muck right now, I'll pipe up (if you'll permit me to stray OT for a sec!).

Century is due to open up probably around Christmas time in the old Lola's/Up&Down location on Richards. I had the pleasure of playing poker in the space recently with Gerald (Vera's), Edward (Bin), Pablo (Lucy), Sean (Heather), Trevor (Wild Rice/Yaggers) and several others recently. It s a truly magnificent space, and I'm very eager to see what Sean and Sue are going to do with it. The dining room on the main floor (with it's vaulted, gold leaf decorated ceilings and marble floors) will offer cuisine with a latin edge to it (from what I gather), and the upstairs will be more of a cocktail lounge.

There is a story about the poker game(s) coming up in the next issue of EAT Magazine.

Here is a pic, just a window into a debaucherous evening and hardly a glimpse of the space (which was just a shell when we played - I think the table we used was a door!).

Thank you, Andrew, that sounds very promising.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program: "Wireless in Vancouver".

In my WE column this week I talked about wireless dining and settled on Havana, Bacchus, Lift, and Nu as the best four afternoon office options. Thanks for the input.

This sidebar was in the print version, but never made it online:

"Since most fine dining managers don‘t have the balls to say “no“, let’s talk etiquette before you take my recommendations and run. There are three rules to follow: eat something, drink something, and tip obscenely well. If you sit down for an espresso and hog a table to surf porn or play solitaire for two hours, you deserve to be drawn and quartered with your eyes pecked out by a murder of avian flu-carrying crows. As a courtesy, always call the restaurant to ask if bandwidth is on the menu, and should you want to make table 22 your office, let them know (they‘ll likely make a note of it and reserve it for you the next time you check in). This gives the waiter enough time to draw the shortest straw, as the only thing more disheartening than a solo diner is their small bill..."

Kits Coffee on 4th had free wireless that I would use from time to time. However, the last couple times I was there I noticed they had the WIFI password-protected. Can anyone confirm if this is still the case? Can you get a password with purchase?

I'm curious if there are any good updates for this thread?

Here are some of mine:

- Pedro's cafe on Granville Island

- Doux Crepes on Richards Street

- Chez Faye in Yaletown

Other good spots?

Chill Winston has a great patio and free wifi (just get under an umbrella so you can read your screen). Trans Continental and Jules also pick up free wifi (from somewhere) as well.

Ipod and Starbucks hook up with new iPod Touch:

The exclusive deal with Starbucks will let iPod Touch and iPhone users have automatic free Wi-Fi access to search for or buy digital tunes featured in U.S Starbucks stores that offer wireless Internet access.

The Starbucks partnership begins at 600 stores in New York and Seattle on Oct. 2. In November, it will be available at 350 stores in the San Francisco Bay Area, and by the end of next year it will be in all Starbucks with Wi-Fi nationwide.

Wow, I wouldn't have even thought of getting a connection there. Good idea though since the service there is so slow :raz:.

Latest addition: GI Gelato on Granville Island. It is WEP enabled, but they will give you the shared key at the counter. Very strong signal too, with a very nice housemade gelato product.
