I'm looking for blocks to stop soft cheese from running away- does anyone actually sell them ready made, or am I going to have to find marble off-cuts?

At the moment I have to put them onto small plates, and that doesn't stop them disapearing over the side.

I'm looking for quinces - I've seen the lovely big Turkish ones in Waitrose just before Xmas in the past, but if anyone spots any in shops near central or southern London (W1 for preference), please let me know.

I have an urge to make quince jam. We used to live in a house with a quince tree in the garden, but now we're renting, and I can't plant a quince until we've bought a place.

We got some lovely French ones from a company called Made in Perigord, lady named Denise will be able to help you. They have vans going to Rungis market, picking up produce and bringing it back here. They can do courier delivery, but I don't know about minimum orders telephone 01952 630284.

I am looking for non plastic Bento boxes, with separate inner compartments, rather than one "airline" tray.

Tried google, ebay etc but no luck ? Am I looking for the impossible?

Neal's Yard Dairy in Covent Garden had them last week - may be worth calling to check first.

Perry Court farm had quinces at Islington Farmers Market yesterday - I don't know if they do any of the others in central London...

I'm looking for a sealer that bags food in a vacuum - its for cooking rather than just storage.  model recs appreciated

OK - I now have vacuum sealer & spent weekend playing with it (yeh, yeh - i need to get out more). Big problem - when cooking various foods - the bags melt. So - where can I get bags that don't melt? :sigh:

Turkish Food Centre always stock quinces this time of year and are usually by far the cheapest source (that i've found anyway) . It may be worth ringing one of their branches to check.

For home I use bag rolls from Rusco vac, 01367 252754 Fax:- 01367 253406

I use these to boil in, you can get the occasional burster but have found quite reliable, I cut my own from 20cm rolls, hope this helps.

I'm making liqueurs for presents, but as I'd rather give people a selection than one large bottle, I need to find smaller bottles to put them in. Does anyone know where I can get small quantities of bottles (sizes approx 100ml and 200-250ml)?

Thanks!

www.ebottles.net have a great selection, including 50, 250, 500, 100ml with either cork closures or swingtop (grolsch like) closures, and they have no minimum order

Duck Confit

I'm thinking of making cassoulet for a dinner party in a few weeks time and yes I know I could make the duck legs myself but ... is there anywhere I can get very good ready-prepared ones? Central London or mail order.

Very nice but expensive ones (in a glass jar) from Comptoir Gascon by Smithfield Market.

Ah ha! I'll send the other half round - he can afford them

Especially as I'll need 6.

Any idea how much?

(Will also have to buy a large new earthenware dish, as well. )

Thanks

If it's closer, Villandry have very good ones - not too salty.  About GBP10 for 2 cuisses...

Eeek! Well I suppose it is a special occasion ...

And if I go into Villandry I know I'll buy all sorts of other things. Handy for Paul for the chocolate cake, though.

Oh dear and then there's the florist at the entrance.. must look for some 0% balance transfers.

Thanks for the info!

Looking for a london source of tomatillo.

I seem to have purchased a bag of tamarillo.

I'm not sure they will work in a salsa.

The Cool Chile Company usually do them. Think they have a stall at Borough Market. Tamarillos are vaguely related to tomatillos, aren't they? Only closer to the cape goosberry end of the spectrum. Could be good for a chutney. If only Peter Kay were here.

Verjus.

I not only don't know where to buy it, I don't know how to pronounce it.

I'm sitting in a Starbuck's near Leicester Square but I'm pretty mobile. I brought my folding bike with me on this trip. But, I only bought an hour of air time so I'll be signing off soon. I'll be back on tomorrow. Crossing my fingers that someone will have an answer.
