So what about the Living Room? I love to out a shill. I remember Jurgen Gothe (Je@king Off) used to be the places biggest shill. It was like the place invented roasted garlic. Obviously someone must eat there. Like at the WS award winning Vineyard.

Ahhh, my kind of person - one who can be bribed with food.

I'll have to give some thought to what I have of value.....perhaps my orange drop cookies?

I'm off to Whistler this morning for a long weekend - will the cranberry oatmeal delights keep unitl early next week?

Heck, I'm tempted to make a new batch on Saturday. Yes, they'll keep. Yes, orange drop cookies are good contraband for a swap! Ski an extra run for me. To say I'm envious would be a remarkable understatement.

I have a 2000 word essay on "Areopagitica" due tomorrow and I'm still on Egullet, procrastinating.

Now that's a hardcore addict.

Areopagitica. Reminiscent of my own English Honours days. Gack. That is all.

In an attempt at a not-so-smooth segue back to topic (in order to placate Arne  ), I've never actually dined at the Living Room. Anyone have an unbiased review for me?

I guess this restaurant is not affiliated with 'The Living Room' on East Hastings? Now theirs a venture worth talking about with all the hospitality and caring they do for the homeless!

I ate at the Living Room some time ago and it was really good. Haven't had a chance to get back in some time but would go at the drop of a hat.

So Ling, did you make the Larb or do you have a secret source? Do tell girl!

I made the larb. It was my first time. Didn't have a food processor though, so the pork wasn't minced all that well. Very tasty! I used snowangel's recipe in Recipe Gullet.

What happened to the living room??

It was a HOT place  about six years back; let's see, somebody from there went to hells kitchen or their other place??. I lived in the hood for over ten years, it was a kits fav, no joke, then it fell and fell. Now I have no idea, nobody I know goes anymore, also every one moved to main street area, only a few left in skitsilano.

Your sarcasm ranks up there with the cruelest, do you ever hold back or do you just say whatever crosses your mind.

Whereabouts is this place? (i.e more specific than "Kits" pleez) I've never spotted it and here it's in my very own neighbourhood? Am I completely blind? (That's rhetorical - I often search for things RIGHT in front of me)

On the south side of West 4th Avenue, about 2 1/2 blocks west of Macdonald, directly adjacent to Milestones.

This place seem's just about counter culture enough for a try. Some one take one for the team. BTW Hell's Kitchen seems to be surviving in one of the most damned locations in the city. Anyone been? For 100 points can anyone name the popular early eighties restaurant that inhabited that location? Or for 200 points the poular Commercial Drive greek place that died a quick death there? Hey I think I'm going to start a new thread about damned locations.

Le Grec. Can I have my 200 points now?

I'm still thinking on your first question.

Was it not Cafe Centro for a short period?

J says it was "Centro" before le Grec (*sigh* Le Grec  ), but before that she can't remember. I was living in Burnaby at the time. Kits was pretty "exotic" for me.

Oh Coop, put me out of my misery...was it Magnolia's back in the '80's? I was a young girl back then  , and was very excited to eat in a "grown up" restaurant. I even called my mom to see if she remembered its name, but unfortunately menopause took her memory a couple of years ago. Please, what was its name?

Cheers,

MD

PS. I too am an e-gullet addict. I went cold turkey in December, because my addiction was interfering with my work and home life. I have already fallen off the wagon.

And the winners are Gourmetgal and Mooshmouse. A friend of mine cooked at Magnolia's while we both went to VCC. We were all very envious, he was our hereo of fine cuisine.

So I had to come out of a lengthy lurking mode (and actually register with the society  ) to add a comment or two about The Living Room Bistro.

I have eaten there three times over the years..... first two times: the food, the service, all good. But the last time we went (probably about 2 - 2 1/2 years ago) the food was really mediocre and I haven't been back since. Now.... I have not written the place off but it just hasn't been top of mind since the last experience.

As for places on 4th Ave that are great.... well.... there's Bishops of course, and Pastis and I like Maria's Greek Taverna when that sort of mood strikes. I miss Taka Japanese and have yet to try it's replacement "Yuji's" except for take out.... was not terribly impressed but will give it a "dine-in" run one of these days.

Okay... back to perusing

Always take a good look at what you're about to eat. It's not so important to know what it is, but it's critical to know what it was. --Unknown
