Cleaning My New Flour Sifter?

I've never owned a sifter before, always used a sieve and it was just ducky. But my husband, sweetheart that he is, gave me a sifter for Hanukkah. I just used it for the first time and it occurs to me that I'm not sure how to clean it--it's got sort of a complicated inside (and we don't have a dishwasher). I seem to recall my mom just keeping hers in a plastic bag and never washing it--is that what people do?

Just remember, mother knows best!

(I don't wash mine, either)
