i take full credit for naming john "John the hot dog guy." he tried changing to "hot dog john" there for a while, but i wasn't having any of it.

great article. holly is quoted as well.

so, in the past 2 days, we've had fat guy on TV, holly on TV, holly in the NYT, and John the hot dog guy in the NYT. not a bad week.

Does NY get the Jersey section?

No.

So, since it's not possible to read the article unless one lives in New Jersey, can somebody please summarize it?

it talked about john a bit, and how this passion came about. he also summarized the top 10 or so hot dog places in NJ. a few of which i'll now make a point of trying. there's on out on rt 22 near PA that i pass quite often. i'll be stopping in next time for sure.

The Pennsy chain Yocco's has several locations in the Allentown area if you're out that way. One convenient location is on PA 100, opposite the big brewery visible from I-78/US-22. About one minute off the freeway.

Decent dogs, rolls are crappy.

Apparently it's easier still to dictate the conversation and in effect, kill the conversation.

I assume you're talking about Toby's Cup, home of the scary clown.

What happened to Johnnie and Hanges, Callahans, The Hot Grill in Clifton and Hirams?

john has never been to Johnnie and Hanges. he's also never been to Clixes and that other place in Ridgewood/Glen Rock/Hawthorne (not sure of the town). he's expressed interest in trying them, however. perhaps i'll get him out one day for the trifecta.

Goffle Grill, right down thw block from Clixes.

I'm a NYC expat. Since coming to the darkside, as many of my freinds have said, I've found that most good things in NYC are made in NJ.

The article is subtitled "Roll and Weiner Mon Amour". Apparently.

Andy, how the HELL do you know this??? I mean, if I can't even get the section....

I'm sorry, this is just my stupid joke. John Foxx (with 2 X's) was the original lead singer of the band Ultravox. One of their songs was called "Hiroshima Mon Amour". I thought it was funny anyway.

  • 2 weeks later...

I kept checking the Times archives for this article, hoping it would be put online. I bought a few copies of the paper, but I have friends and relatives in other states that don't have access to the Times, so I wanted to send them a link to the article. I e-mailed the Times, and was told that it was in the "premium archives" and that I would have to use quotation marks when searching, and that I would have to order it for a small fee. I had no success doing this. In fact, I was billed for an article that I did not order and never even heard of. Finally they sent me the right article in an e-mail. If anyone wants to read this article, please e-mail me, and I'll forward it to you. Just ignore the beginning and scroll down to the actual article.

The online component of the Times NJ section is such a mess, it's really disgraceful. Why can't they get it together to put the NJ, CT, and LI sections online at least for a few days the way they do with the rest of the paper? It seems particularly absurd that John, the subject of the damn article, should have to jump through so many hoops and actually pay money in order to share this with his friends and family. That being said, the Times owns the copyright and eGullet can't endorse any kind of unauthorized distribution, even via private e-mail.

Even hot dogs get the blues!

BTW, Andy didn't UltraVoxx have a song called "Vienna" as in Vienna Beef hot dogs made famous in the Chicago style dog?

There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the Times's practice of when regional reporting items go on the website and when they go "premium."

John's article took about eight days to go on the website, and went to premium four days later. Marge Perry's several days older Korean restaurants article of June 29, went on the free side in six days, and remains free and available as of July 18, or 20 days after paper.

It would be nice if they had a general policy that material will be posted on the website x days after publication, and will go premium y days after that. News items typically go on the site at 11 pm the night before paper publication
