My growing dilemma - a Nova Scotian food 'desert'

Recommended Posts

It's a federal thing, rather than a provincial thing.

It's not really as bad as it sounds, depending where you live. Sometimes the dock where the catch lands is also home to the processor/wholesaler, and you can indeed buy right from the dock. In other cases, fish go from water to boat to processor/wholesaler to customer in a matter of just a few hours...many's the time I've broken down a halibut at noon that was taken out of the water at first light.

Does anyone who still posts on eGullet, other than me, live in Nova Scotia right now?

Hi Deryn, I'm here. I think this might be my first eG post since Steven passed. Guysborough County is the one corner of Nova Scotia I haven't explored. Each summer I almost go to the Stan Rogers Festival and that great gastropub. Buying seafood at the docks directly from the boats is common and legal - and Canso is one of the oldest fishing ports in North America.

I just made a cornish game hen with chestnut stuffing. . .

Would you believe a pigeon stuffed with spam? . . .

Would you believe a rat filled with cough drops?

Wow. How nice to see you back, Peter.  However we haven't seen Deryn posting for quite some time.

Nice to see you emerge from the fog, Peter. :)
