Im remodeling my restaurant so I have some time to travel around the state. I want to visit some cool farms, dairys, sausage makers and so on. What are your favorite artisan products made here in Louisiana?

Mauthe's Dairy Farm, mauthesdairy@aol.com; really nice people, good products.

Smith's Creamery, Mt. Hermon, LA: Smith's butter won a national taste-test a few years ago. I love their chocolate milk.

Chef John Folse's dairy operation produces great cheeses & yogurt, but I don't know if he's using local milk or not. He also has an olive grove near Donaldsonville that I'd love to see--so you can now buy local olive oil, too.

Whispering Pines Farm in Loranger has grass-fed beef and some poultry. Another family-run concern--here's the contact info: http://www.localharvest.org/farms/M9764

In fact, the Local Harvest website is a great resource for family farms, organic farms, small producers, etc. Just search "louisiana" and you'll get a nice listing of our local resources.

I'm not sure if it's exactly what you had in mind, but Old New Orleans Rum is putting out a nice product. It's certainly artisan. They're rolling it out nationally in the fall. You can stop by any time for tour. Here is a link.

Not sure if this qualifies as artisinal any more, but the folks that make Cousin's Dressings are really nice and I am sure if you called them they would give you a tour. Also if you are in the area I know Abita Brewery gives tours on Saturdays.
