  1. My white fruitcake needs at least a month with liberal applications of sherry. Stews, soups, and chili, definitely.
  2. We used to eat there occasionally when we lived in Wheaton. Good Fortune was our favorite - mostly HK style dishes.
  3. Bumping this topic up... We ate at a very good Taiwanese restaurant this afternoon called Bob's Noodle. It's in downtown Rockville, hidden on the side of a big Rockville Pike office building. There's only one menu, with many soups, noodle dishes and Taiwanese specialties, nothing westernized. We're not really familiar with Taiwanese cuisine, so most of the menu was stuff we had never seen before. We ordered oyster congee, Shanghai Chow Mein (broad rice noodles with cabbage and pork), Sweet Rice Cake, Taiwanese-style Meat Pie (pork in a very thick gelatinous wrapper), and Spinach with Garlic. All were very good. The owner came over and chatted with us for a few minutes and explained some of the dishes we had ordered, which was very helpful. Bob's Noodle 305 N. Washington Street Rockville, MD 301-315-6668 Edit: forgot to mention that this place is cash only right now.
  4. When I was pregnant with Emma all I wanted was hamburgers. Out here in the 'burbs the best one I could find was a Houstons. If I had to have a milkshake with it - Silver Diner. The burgers at Luna Grill used to be good, especially with their sweet potato fries. Burgers are an iffy thing for me - unless it's highly recommended I usually look for something else on the menu. The ones we make at home are usually soooo much better. Malawry, where is Colorado Kitchen?
  5. Could someone please post a recipe for this? Marshmallows optional. I'll see if I can dig it up. The marshamllows were essential - they were put in the bottom of the pan with the rhubarb and pineapple to make the topping for the cake, then the batter was poured over that.
  6. Liver, except chicken liver sauteed in butter with lots of salt. That includes Foie Gras. Never had monkfish liver though, I will have to try it. Uncooked crab, scallops, and shrimp. Cooked is fine. Raw clams and cooked oysters - yuck. Cooked clams and raw oysters - yum. Lots of mayo on anything. Beer with a lot of hops. I've had to accustom myself to like bitter foods, but this is one that's just over the top bitter. Offal. Anything that tastes even slightly "funky." If anyone read the thread on supertasters I gave my reasons there. Just too sensitive to off flavors. But stinky cheese is OK for some reason. Raw broccoli.

  8. Steve, I had a bad experience at the Bertucci's in the 2000 Penn Ave complex too, and good pizza at the location on Connecticut south of Dupont Circle, so your theory about mall location may be correct. The White Flint location is in the mall and that may be the source of its suckiness. The other choices were the Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Changs, or fast food. Next time we will plan to get the heck out of there well before suppertime. You're right about Tysons. The only interesting restaurant in Tysons I was America, which was hit or miss but an interesting concept. Tysons II is marginally better only because they have a Legal Seafood, which can be relied on to have a decent oyster selection if nothing else. If you have to eat at Tysons II a better option is the Ritz Carlton which is accessible from the mall.
  9. It would have been helpful to see some sources, because some of her claims are controversial. I wouldn't necessarily assume that her views reflect those of the site owners, but some people might. The article certainly deserved to be published.
  10. OK, based on last night's experience I can tell you where not to go. Ever. We were at White Flint (site of the only Williams-Sonoma near us ) with both kids and needed dinner right away, so we decided to go to Bertucci's. In a word, awful. I have never eaten pizza that needed salt and pepper before. Bland, tasteless, undercooked crust, unseasoned canned tomatoes, bland cheese, bland sausage (how they managed that I have no idea), bland olives and clueless service. I cannot for the life of me figure out how they managed to take the taste out of everything. You know it's bad when you don't even want to take the leftovers home. To quote my four-year-old: "Daddy's pizza is much better. Can we make pizza at home next time?" If you must get mass-produced mall pizza by all means go for California Pizza Kitchen. It's head and shoulders above this crap. Heck, even Papa John's would have been better. The best part of my meal was getting a frozen custard at Kohr brothers on the way out.
  11. I just found it completely uninspiring and too basic. Plus the format is a nightmare to cook from.
  12. Wow, thanks a lot, Matthew. Nice to get some actual answers instead of speculation.
  13. When was it published? I need a new quest myself. Just bought two more cookbooks myself. Brooke Dojny's Flash in the Pan about easy one-pan dinners. It looks pretty good. Scott is now commuting instead of working at home, so I have to do all of the cooking now - with two kids underfoot. I need some shortcuts right now. And How to Cook Without a Book, which I will be returning.
  14. Scrambled eggs.
  15. Another vote for pintos. With bacon? They're better with bacon.
  16. How long is the drive from the DC area? We drive to Charlotte from time to time, but I don't think I've ever timed it to Raleigh. If it's more than four hours we'd better buy the minivan with the DVD before the trip. I'd offer rides, but with a four-year-old and a one-year-old in the car I don't think I'd get any takers.
  17. Your article is my favorite piece in that issue. Welcome to eGullet!
  18. me: coffee, a banana my son: kleenex
  19. a steaming cup of Earl Grey tea and a handful of almonds
  20. You and me both. I haven't worn hot pants since Dukes was still on TV.
  21. When are you going to be here? If we're in town and can get a sitter we might be interested.
  22. Emma liked it too, so that's three kiddie recs for Jaleo. And the Hotel Washington is a great idea, Vengroff.
  23. Nutella is sort of like peanut butter, except made with hazelnuts and chocolate. I usually eat it straight out of the jar, but it's good spread on shortbread cookies and made into little sandwiches.
  24. Blondie! And Claire! And Maggie! And Marlene! And Katie! OMG - a Chickfest! How incredibly FUN!! Okay - let's coordinate outfits - what should we all wear??? Daisy Duke shorts and halter tops? Is is a pig pickin, after all.
  25. I haven't been, but the little writeup sounded promising. Let us know what it's like if you go.
