  1. I do. I have a bad habit of wiping my hands on my apron. If the apron isn't there...
  2. Cast iron frying pan, of course. Oxo Good Grips chef's knife, because I wanted an extra. Half sheets I picked up at Costco, $15 for three. Stainless bowl set, and a two-pack of nonstick skillets from Costco. Assorted platters and serving bowls from Target. I love Target. Chopstick rests, rice bowls and utensils from Asian markets. All of my everday placemats and tablecloths are bought on clearance.
  3. Welcome to egullet, Kathleen! What are some of your favorites?
  4. Yes, you can see where I got my cookbook acquisitiveness. I only took home about half her collection. Many of them are from the 60's. Among the books I took home were three volumes of "The Good Cook." Guess what I will be collecting next? Edit: Oh wow! I have my grandma's first cookbook - Women's Home Companion Cookbook, published in 1943.
  5. I'm making these tomorrow, after I hit the Grand Mart today. Thanks Jaymes!
  6. We shop at the Thai market, but haven't tried the takeout. It is on Thayer across the street from Safeway. If all you want is a beer, I can recommend the Quarryhouse. It's on the corner of Georgia and Bonifant - actually, it's under the corner of Georgia and Bonifant. You get there by descending a flight of stairs to the side of the bank on the corner. I have drunk many many pitchers of Bass there over the years. The menu is mostly sandwiches. I don't recall anything about the food, probably because of said pitchers. I haven't been to Negril in a while, but they used to have very good curried goat, real ginger beer, and excellent patties. The Indonesian place that Steve Sacharoff mentions is Sabang, and as of a couple of years ago was pretty good, and a cuisine not over-represented in the area. It's possible to order a la carte in addition to the set rjistaffel menus.
  7. Oh My. Um, thanks Chris. I'll probably have nightmares about it.
  8. I just inherited at least 60 cookbooks from my grandmother's collection. Not sure if I'm up to an exact count right now.
  9. Perhaps Austin Grill? The have a couple of locations around town. I thought you were asking for Mexican, in which case I would direct you to Mixtec in Adams Morgan.
  10. Uh, we don't have time to go fishing? Or if you're me, hate fishing? There's nothing wrong with buying what you don't want to procure for yourself, Dave. I live at least an hour from the Chesapeake. Used for picking crabs, along with your fingers.
  11. I love those. Except on Pepperidge Farm white, not Wonder.
  12. You could get fancy and do pigs in blankets with Vienna sausages. Just find a recipe for something that calls for Miracle Whip.
  13. Oh yes. Anchovies...mmmmm. A must on our homemade pizzas. Matthew, I think a long draining time might be the solution for you. Maybe wrap the cheese in paper towels, set in a colander, and weight it with a can?

    Dinner! 2003

Steak marinated with lime juice, EVOO, cumin, ancho chile powder. Grilled medium rare, thinly sliced. Served with grilled vidalia onions, tortillas, roasted tomatillo salsa, and guacamole. Green chile refied pinto beans Sliced cucumbers '96 Rochioli Pinot Noir No dessert. Too full of steak.
  15. Hey, anyone who wants to come to our house for tapas is welcome. We had a house catastrophe that KO'd any party planning for a month or so, but we should be back in fine form by mid-July. Anyone up for a ballgame? I will be in Philly for a Dodgers/Phillies game at the end of July.

    Biscuits!

Your second recipe sounds very much like mine. I use the food processor to cut in the fat, then dump into a bowl to mix in the buttermilk. Just be careful not to overprocess. I don't bake mine with the sides touching - I like the sides crispy too. And I don't brush with butter.
  17. Would folks from DC be welcome? I have friends in central NJ that want me to come and visit.
  18. I just checked Bourdain's new novel out at the library, but haven't started it yet because I had to finish the new Harry Potter.
  19. I would cook the chicken with stock and prep the veggies the night before. Then mix everything and dress the day of the party. Soaking the chicken in lime juice overnight sounds potentially unpleasant. What a great idea. We're having a party at the end of July and haven't gotten around to the menu yet. Larbecue and ice cold beer sounds perfect.
  20. I know ours do. And they multiply like rabbits. We're about to go out of town for a week, so I'm cleaning out the fridge...I just found and threw out 5 jars of salsa.
  21. Isn't it awful? I caught part of one episode, just as one of them was explaining that "fresh beets are a hassle, just open a can" - then she put the canned beets in a cake as a fat substitute.
  22. My mom and sister live close to Southpark Mall, near Sharon Road, Tyvola, etc. Not downtown, but not too far away either. We usually go to Discovery Place, so I know that downtown area pretty well. There's a nice brewpub nearby that I've eaten at a couple of times.
  23. What a great looking sandwich. Thanks for the report on Best Kitchen Supply. We've now got fewer that six wine glasses and I refuse to pay Crate & Barrel prices, so a trip downtown is in the cards for me.
  24. I second the recommendation for the Watergate bar, and it's a very short walk up New Hampshire Ave to Nectar. I was sorry to see the Peacock Lounge at the Watergate go a few years ago. Anyone else remember it?
  25. Becoming a member was optional when I made my reservation today. Edited to add that while Darren's review was great, it was actually Mark's line about the cheese that made me want to go.
