  1. You haven't met my kids.
  2. Thanks loads! I'm driving down Tuesday eve and staying through Sunday, so I can probably get a few meals in with my family down there. Here's hoping that Charlotte has a good fireworks display. I'm kinda sad to be missing the DC show.
  3. I just made a reservation at Nectar through www.opentable.com for 7/12. What a great service. Vengroff, is there any real value in becoming an opentable member?
  4. We have a 27 sq ft fridge/freezer, and a full sized upright freezer in the basement for two adults and two toddlers. Both are jam-packed. It's a combo of poor organization and condiment obsession.

    Cabbage

That sounds good. How long do you cook it?
  6. I have a great orzo salad recipe. My mother's macaroni salad was pretty good. It had tomatoes and cubed dill pickle in it, among other things.
  7. I love different mustards, we have about 7-8 jars in the fridge at any one instance. I just don't make my own. Maybe I should try. And yes, ketchup is ketchup.
  8. Jeez, you make your own mustard? Most of the non-foodie people I know are amazed that I even make spaghetti sauce and cookies from scratch, for goodness sake, never mind condiments.
  9. Ok, I just reread vengroff's post and my mouth is watering. This will be my birthday dinner destination next month. I just wish there was something worth seeing at the Kennedy Center that night.
  10. I've never even heard of it. Recipe please?
  11. As I posted on another thread, I am heading to Charlotte next week with my 1-year-old. These look like great suggestions, Kathi - are any of them kid-friendly? I don't need a kid's menu (I don't feed my kids that stuff) but a high chair and no dirty looks would be a plus.
  12. Cobb salad, when done right.

    Dinner! 2003

Thanks Soba. I will try this. Tonight's repast: Broiled (raining again or we would grill ) chicken marinated with lemon, garlic, cumin, ground coriander, oregano, and EVOO. Glazed baby turnips Steamed asparagus Dessert: 1995 Vosne-Romanee, Domaine Jean Grivot. Our basement flooded, so we are drinking our way through a number of bottled we had stored down there.

    Dinner! 2003

Thanks Kris! I have HSSS, and have wondered about their other books. I see a trip to the library in my future...
  15. I remember the steak sandwich, and their fries used to be pretty good. Of course, this was back in the 70's, who knows what they're like now. When I was a kid Carl's Jr was the fast food place of choice on long road trips up Rt 5 from LA to the SF area. Holy cow! I have a picture of me and my siblings in front of that building. I haven't thought about Knott's Berry Farm in 15-20 years. Does it still exist?
  16. That's evil. It's the reverse of what I have to do with my grandma. With her I have to sneak back in to put more money on the table.

Soba, do you make this or buy it? I haven't seen it before.

    Dinner! 2003

Kris, where did you get your pita recipe? I've been wanting to make them at home. Tonight's dinner (the chicken that I wanted to cook didn't defrost in time, so had to improvise): Salad of white beans, tuna, cucumber, vidalia onion, fresh dill, EVOO, white wine vinegar Steamed broccoli Bread and butter trip to the "cow store" (what my four-year-old calls Ben & Jerry's) for a scoop of chunky monkey. Had never tried it - not my favorite flavor
  19. Got a Snickers Almond last night and sure enough, the almond distribution was very uneven. Might have been because of the uneven size of the almond pieces. Still darn tasty though.
  20. We've had a terrible meal the last two times we have been to Les Halles, and it's not really close to the KC. I second Bistro Francais, and you could walk to the Kennedy Center from there if it's a nice night. If not, it's a very short cab ride. Have fun at Barbara Cook. She's amazing.
  21. Snickers Almond I haven't noticed uneven almond distribution. Maybe I'll do some "field research" when I take my daughter's prescription to CVS today.
  22. So glad he's feeling better! Hm, flounder would probably be fine. We usually eat salmon, and I find the smell of it makes my tummy flippy-floppy until I'm over whatever it is.
  23. It is wonderful, Heather; I'm close to being hooked on the stuff! We get blackberry honey, and buckwheat honey (love it) and blueberry honey at the farmer's market here. I may suggest rosemary honey to the keepers. It must have an amazing aroma. The pasta was good but, something was missing...fresh herbs perhaps? Some basil might have perked things up. The lemon zest was a good choice. It would have been bland and unctuous without it.
  24. My pediatrician recommends the BRAT diet for the kids: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. No spicy food, no dairy, no fiber for a couple of days. Drink plenty of liquids - I prefer chicken boullion. After a couple of days yogurt is a good idea, and plain veggies. No fish, no seafood.
  25. oooh, rosemary honey. That sounds wonderful. Orrichiette, with broccoli, goat cheese, lemon zest, EVOO, s & p. Eh. This could be better.
