  1. I'm so glad to read all of this, because people are forever slagging on Palace Kitchen, a restaurant I really like. I think they have friendly service, mix excellent cocktails, and serve really good food.
  2. On a tangent: they've started construction of a new Trader Joe's on Capitol Hill, around Madison and 17th (just east of Madison Market). Woo hoo !! - S Are you sure? You don't know how much I hope you're right, since I live close by. I've heard, though, that they are building a Safeway, and found recent stuff on the Web about the possibility of a Safeway with condos above it. We don't need no stinkin' Safeway. Edit: Someone told me that both a Trader Joe's and a Safeway are being built, the latter at about 20th and Madison.
  3. Thanks for posting this! I'm going. Who else?
  4. Are they allowed to do that by law in NC? Here in Washington State they are, which I learned the hard way not long ago.
  5. You don't want to do that! You should go Friday if it's the best time for you. I'm going to a concert -- sorry 'bout that!
  6. I can't go Friday, but Saturday or Sunday is good.
  7. I liked the White Russian, which they stupidly discontinued years ago.
  8. I'm almost sure I'm going to attend this event in 2004, and I encourage other non-NYers to consider doing same.
  9. From Washington State??? That'd put you in the lead for greatest distance travelled!!! I'm planning to take two weeks off in October anyway, spending most of it in the Midwest, and my itinerary is pretty flexible (except for the weekend after Pig Pickin'). So I plugged Seattle-->Raleigh-->Cedar Rapids(Iowa)-->Seattle into Expedia and came up with some decent prices. I'm going to Chicago, but that's just a 4-hour drive from my Iowa destination. A travel agent could probably come up with even better prices. So it's not entirely impossible. It sounds like an event not to be missed.
  10. Sign me up as a maybe. I just looked at three one-way tickets for a total of $500, which sounds entirely feasible. Kathy
  11. It may not be, but I'm in the process of a Seattle chocolate milkshake overview. Places where you'd expect a great shake often have flavorless, or very lackluster, shakes. A local example for me is Husky Deli in West Seattle, a store that makes it's OWN really great ice cream, but their shakes suck. And then, sometimes you'll find a really great shake somewhere you predicted you wouldn't.
  12. I think he said they were from Dick's Restaurant Supply.
  13. Cookies don't seem to brown on Airbake sheets, and I don't like that. I would never use one now.
  14. Here's some nutritional info on bubble tea, but not the pearls by themselves. They're made from cassava, and I don't think they have much in the way of fat, but do have a lot of carbohydrates. http://www.nutrition.com.sg/do/hbeverage.asp
  15. People who don't live in the city and aren't creative about parking and transportation, no. But many of us do go frequently. I was there just yesterday.
  16. I was at Pike Place Market today, and noticed that Harbor Place is reopening as The Islander: Pacific Rim Cuisine and TIKI LOUNGE. I go crazy for tiki lounges and hope this will be a good one.
  17. Starting today at 10:00 AM, KUOW is starting a summer food series. Apparently today it's about looking for Seattle's "ideal burger." (I hope no one touts Kidd Valley! blech) I tried to provide a link, but their "Weekday" link is not working at the moment. Kathy Edit: Okay, now the link is working. The series is called "Vernacular Foods." http://kuow.org/Weekday2.asp Edit #2: I wrote to the program director of KUOW about a month ago to promote Mamster as a food commentator, and I strongly urge others to do the same. They need to have a decent local food show. Even just once a month would be an improvement over their current coverage.

  19. Yeah, that bit about Emeril didn't seem overly nasty to me either.

    Espresso Machines

Are there any decent inexpensive models, or is it necessary to pay $500+?
  21. Article about Flay and "Boy Meets Grill" in flakmag: http://www.flakmag.com/tv/flay.html
  22. I'm glad now that my father was so stern with us. If we made it known that we thought something was icky, he would get really angry because he had worked hard on that dinner after a long day at work. I'm constantly amazed at my coworkers (age seems to be unimportant), who will look at something in SOMEONE ELSE'S lunch and say "yuk." So you don't like it? Keep it to yourself.
  23. I would like to do it again, and there seems to be enough people interested. Ben, would you get on that?
