  1. The bacon-wrapped dates are like crack.

  3. I'm with you. I don't know what the big deal about PFI is. Maybe cheese is cheaper there. Maybe I need to go there with someone who really loves it so they can guide me. But I absolutely don't find it cheaper in general. Edit: Good bulk chocolate is cheaper there too.
  4. Have to bring back this ol' thread. An old friend was in town last night. He's a chef who lives in extreme northern (sushi-deprived) Vermont. He's only in town for 24 hours, and while here he wanted SUSHI. Four of us went to Saito's (of Belltown) and sat at the bar. Everything was just stellar, really fresh, and very generous. Between us I think we had at least 15 types of fish, including wonderful fatty o toro and chu toro, uni, geoduck, etc. Saito's spicy tuna roll is the best and most deluxe I've ever seen. The chef comped my formerly sushi-less friend 4 pieces of nigiri with two amazing mackerels and two other things I can't remember. This was probably my fifth or sixth time at Saito, and I highly recommend it for very fresh sushi and a friendly staff. And they have a great selection of sakes!
  5. An old friend of mine was stationed in Ecuador in the Peace Corps. He mentioned seeing a lot of Fruitarians in Quito. He also said that they wore long robes and didn't have any teeth. Is Froot Loops allowed on this diet?
  6. The Ligurian Lemon Cake recipe from Pierre Herme and Dorrie Greenspan's "Desserts" has olive oil in it. Nightscotsman made it once, and it's one of the best cakes I've ever had.
  7. The Brasserie Margaux dinner is Sunday, April 27 at 7:00 PM. The cost is $75. Arnie Millan, the chatty sommelier, says to email him if you would like to receive a menu: millan@wolfenet.com

This is what Seattle vegetarian restaurant Bamboo Garden does, with nauseating results.
  10. I was mortified by the cream cheese and jelly sandwiches my mother made me take to school. I was also teased because of them. (Hm, aversion to cream cheese is starting to make sense . . . )
  11. We are not allowed to see it in Seattle because we have the lousiest PBS stations in the land. My husband is in SF, CA and got to watch it, though. He said it was "fawning." I still would have liked to see it.
  12. Who would like to join me for this tomorrow? We should go early-ish. Kathy
  13. Has anyone been to Hiroki yet?
  14. I am so happy my fast typing skills came in handy yesterday and that I am the lucky recipient of girlchow's extra ticket to the Oyster Olympics! Gloating isn't pretty.
  15. No no no. They're on ice, so they are WINTER Olympic events. Can't wait to see Bivalve Boitano's quadruple axel this year.
  16. Maybe the reservation clerk should be told that we need to be out of there in time for a 9:00 movie. Actually, why the hell not. The plan is for dinner at The Georgian, Wed. 3/26 at 6:30. There are 3 of us so far. Anyone is welcome. Please PM me as soon as possible if you would like to join us so that I can make reservations.
  17. I can't get over how good those were. They are called cannele. Here's a recent thread all about 'em: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?act=ST...ST&f=72&t=8090& I tried for lunch today at Earth & Ocean, but they were full up. So I scampered over to 727 Pine and had a wonderful lunch of the Garlic Spring Soup, Baby Chicken/Mashed Potatoes, and Chocolate Macaron. I also spotted the pastry chef from E&O having lunch at 727. I want to go back to the Georgian next week (which is the last week, folks!!), because I did not order the Cracklin' Pork Bellies. I have to make up for it. Is anyone interested?
  18. Imagine my surprise when I saw this topic. I do not know Hal, the person who started the thread, yet he described my experience at Carmelita on Saturday night. (It turns out that he knows some of my dining companions.) We did contest the tax on the bill, but it turns out that we were incorrect, as scrat has indicated above. As stated in the Washington Department of Revenue's "Restaurant Guide": "Tips or gratuities received under circumstances that are clearly voluntary are not part of the selling price and, therefore, are not subject to sales tax. However, if the tip or gratuity is added to the bill, such that it is a mandatory charge, the charge becomes part of the selling price subject to tax. A gratuity is not voluntary when the amount is agreed upon and the contract document states that a gratuity 'will be added.' For example, a restaurant may have a policy of adding a 15% charge to the bill for groups of five or more customers. When a gratuity is applied in this manner, the entire charge is subject to retail sales tax and the retailing classification of the B&O tax. References: WAC 458-20-119, WAC 458-20-124." The waitress at Carmelita was as uninformed as we were. She merely stated that it shouldn't be a big deal to us because "it's just a few dollars," and "that's the way the computer totals it." The menu does not state a required gratuity for parties of a certain size, but of course I assumed there would be such a gratuity. The tax code seems to state that this must be mentioned somewhere. Tax on tip does seem excessive to me in any case, but the law as it stands is on their side. I'd bet that most people aren't aware of this tax/tip oddity, and I wonder what the reasoning was behind it. Powerful restaurant lobby?
  19. I think I know where The Georgian got their pork for those Cracklin' Pork Bellies. I bought some organic pork link sausages at Madison Market yesterday, made by Sara-Joe's Pork Products. The owners: Joe & Sara Delong 1601 Delong Rd. St. John, WA 99171
  20. Just keep trying. It'll show up. You can set it up so that the eBay 'bot keeps looking for it automatically.
  21. Thanks for your report, Ye-Ye Girl. When you go back, try The Vamp, which is one of their specialty cocktails. It's festive and delicious.
  22. Probably because the Four Seasons has what, 3 or 4 restaurants in it?..... I did not know that.
  23. I'm almost positive that it's now closed. I personally couldn't stand the concept anyway.
