  1. This is just like when people say "grease" and "oil" are two different things.
  2. Yeah, I'd be all over the duck too.
  3. did you use the red salt? it sounds great. i'm on a salt jag right now and have been eating bits of large salt crystals when i can get my hands on them . We do have the red salt, but used white salt for the truffles. The two salts taste quite different from each other. The Hawai'ian rock salt we used has a very clean taste.
  4. I was at Shiki recently and watched them making platters of beautiful sushi for take out - same quality and quantity as those at the sushi bar were receiving. I's have to say I thought the quality and quantity were outstanding. And the pricewas good too. Chef Yamamoto isn't as fickle as some sushi chefs, if that's the right way to put it. As for Blue C, the atmo is a lot of fun, but I think the quality is very poor.
  5. Smart Ones (Weight Watchers) frozen pizza is the worst thing I've tasted in YEARS.
  6. Isn't the sushi usually more generous (in general) when one sits at a sushi bar than when one opts for takeout? That seems consistent with everything I've read and heard. If you're at the bar and the sushi chef knows you're happy and excited to be there, it seems natural that you're going to get the good stuff. I've done omakase twice recently at Mashiko. I thought the dishes presented were eye-opening and delicious for the most part, the quantity bordering on too much, and the price a bargain. Some of us went with a London eGulleter a few months ago. He was very impressed by how inexpensive it was for the quality and quantity presented. I want to mention my favorite server there, the woman with dreadlocks. She does a stellar job and is very knowledgeable about their dishes.
  7. We dipped the chocolates last night and sprinkled Hawai'ian rock salt on the top of each truffle. They are delicious!!
  8. Are there any good Japanese restaurants in the San Bruno/South SF area?
  9. Nightscotsman made this once, and it is one of the best cakes I've ever had.

    Poor folk wine

According to this, Fred Franzia "has no connection to the Franzia wine brand." http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/liv...ood/5319698.htm Edit: But they're wrong, aren't they?
  11. JAZ, I think I'll make those cookies. They sound great. One question: Definitely no eggs in the recipe?
  12. So I assume you're familiar with everything they make. I doubt they have Odin flatware in stock, for example. If they do, I'll be right over. Lenox has not maintained the design concepts of Dansk days of yore. It's a different type of company now, putting out a lot more cutesy crap.
  13. Perhaps Simichrome would work. http://www.autofanatics.com/simichrome.html
  14. We just got a large set of Dansk's Variation V. It's gorgeous and of very high quality. We bought it from Western Silver: http://www.westernsilver.com/dansk_stainle...ns_v_dansk.html It was backordered, however, and took about a month to reach us. Sandy McLendon, an expert on Dansk and many other midcentury modern matters, told me that the backorder situation is common, and feels that Lenox (who owns Dansk) is ruining the Dansk name by making it difficult to obtain easily.
  15. Sort of looks like a crack pipe.
  16. I don't know any serious drinkers that ever go there. The best places I know of to get really good martinis in Seattle are Oliver's and ZigZag.
  17. I'm in WW now. The program is great, but their recipes still suck.
  18. I bought an old K5-A from eBay recently, and I really love it. From what I understand, the motor is superior to the machines made today. I have to think that some of the K5-As and K45s being sold were probably not used very often.
  19. Chuck, if you happen to find yourself in a McMenamins pub in Seattle, stay far, far away from the food. Glad to hear it's better in Portland.
  20. Found this: http://www.nd.edu/~scholast/02bonefish.html They're owned by Outback Steakhouse, Inc.
  21. So....sichuan peppercorns are available now? They were banned by the USDA a couple of years ago.
  22. There are several unconnected Chinese restaurants in Seattle with "brocalic" on the menu.
  23. Here's the jazz calendar from the Earshot Jazz folks: http://www.earshot.org/calendar.html#21 I love On The Boards. They have a "daring" dance company on Nov. 20-23. http://www.ontheboards.org/index.php?art=6...86&id=12&nav=c3 For something WAY off the mainstream, there's Polestar: http://www.polestarmusic.org
  24. I could be up for that, it's only a block from my office! Hey laurel, count me in. I just found out that She Who Must Be Obeyed will be out of town, so a long lunch is okay.
  25. I would also recommend the Brooklyn for oysters at the bar. It's downtown at 2nd and University. As with Elliott's, Brooklyn has a great variety of oysters, good bartenders, and good service. I think the best place to try geoduck might be at a sushi bar. And perhaps Maximilien in the Market for mussels. Very cool place with a fantastic view. http://www.maximilienrestaurant.com/index2.html
