  1. I've never made a cake without eggs, but I have done it with my cookie recipes. Instead of eggs and butter (a friend with allergies) I used a little oil and apple sauce. If she's vegan, you'll want to adjust the dairy in the recipe as well. Good luck, it's always fun experimenting.

    Pasta Ideas

I have several really good simple recipes. When I was a vegetarian as a teenager (please don't hate me I love meat now ) I had to cook all my own dinners and the first thing I learned how to cook and create was pasta. Spicy Pasta 1lb ground chicken breast sauteed with lots of garlic. 4 or 5 cloves if you're a fan, less if not. Add either 4 diced fresh tomatoes or a can of good diced tomatoes that have been drained somewhat. Salt to taste, then add a good tbsp or more of chinese chili/garlic paste. (I usually add about 2) This doesn't need to cook for very long, maybe 10 min. Toss with pasta of your choice. My classic recipe 1 onion diced sauteed with 3 cloves of garlic that have been finely minced. Once softened, add a couple of tsp of basil and oregano (use fresh if you can), a good pinch of red pepper flakes, a pinch of fennel, (I think I usually put in about a tsp) salt, then add 1 can of diced tomatoes(or 2 depending on how much you want to make, this sauce freezes really well) Simmer for about 20mins. At this point I add about a tbsp of sugar and a good handful of parmesan. Toss with pasta of your choice. I made a pasta the other night with olives, garlic, fried capers, but I can't remember everything I put in it. It was good though
  3. Which one? The one on Main Street in Vancouver, or the one in Surrey? There's also another one on Fraser St in Van too.
  4. Well, there's the obvious, which is Maurya on Broadway. It's good but not my favorite. Ashiana is my favorite right now. The food isn't oily, which I find with a lot of Indian places, the spice is to your liking and if you like it hot, oh my! I know there are more that I've tried, I just can't think of them right now.
  5. Yes, Arne, and it's appropriately called The Tilting Room. ← Worthwhile to visit for a tilt? A. ← Hmmm... I'm thinking that with a name like "Tilt", this may be a bar that I should stay away from, even though I have wanted to have a drink there for quite a few years.
  6. I too will suggest Chocolate Arts. As far as I'm concerned, it's the only place to buy chocolates.
  7. Wow, thanks Steve, I think we may have a new supplier now too.
  8. There is a wholesaler in Burnaby that we use for all of our packaging but I can't remember the name. I've placed the call and should have the name of it shortly. OK, Creative Packaging is the company that we use for most of our packaging. Also Charlie's Chocolate Factory sells packaging for confections.
  9. Bale, is that the one beside the coffee shop and not right on Kingsway but just in front of it?
  10. One word for that: EWWWWWWWWWWWW! A. ← What, you don't like the idea of carpet in front a toilet in a men's room?
  11. Thanks Yetty. Everything will be much better now Those dates just look absolutely amazing.
  12. I'm all for a crab cake club.....mmm.....crab cakes.......*drool*
  13. Hmmm... how very mysterious..... care to elaborate? ← It was overly crowded, you couldn't move around, the drinks were....meh...the atmostphere was a little overwhelming. I don't know if I could go back just yet either.
  14. Right you are my dear Ummm ... not exactly ... Not that I'm all that fussy when eating either! A. ← Quite frankly, I'll take either Whatever it truly is, it's really really good.
  15. The old standby was the Georgia Street Bar and Grill. The old "Fall Down" was the Railway!! Very different bars Wait..I always fall down...it could have been any one of them
  16. Oh yes you have Ling!! Remember the corned beef sandwiches from Big Night? ← I thought that was pastrami. Corned beef and pastrami is one and the same, then, I guess? ← Right you are my dear It's good stuff and as I said, like crack! Well for me anyway, for my birthday, I would have happily sat down to a birthday cake made of that pastrami Although the gingerbread is still freakin' good!!
  17. I'd have to say Bacchus as well. I have personally never been but I do hear good things about it. My old stand by has been closed for several years, and I never really found a place to replace it.
  18. Again I have to say, a glass of wine. (the perfect food when you're pissed off)
  19. I believe Ling was mentioning this place on another thread, of course my brain isn't functioning at a very high level today, so I can't for the life of me remember which one. Found it. Second page of the Over/Under Thread! I'd do the link thing, but opening up another page on this damned computer takes too long and usually crashed this POS!!!
  20. I'm not sure what that is now, when I lived in that neighborhood in 1997 it was 3 or 4 different restaurants in 4 years and it was also vacant for almost a year of that too.

    Hanger Steak

Wow, how is that I'm just finding this thread now? We've had a bit of a Hangar obsession in vancouver for a few months now and thankfully nwyles brought it in for us all to satisfy our cravings. Hangar is now one of my favorite cuts.

  23. Oh yes you have Ling!! Remember the corned beef sandwiches from Big Night?

    Shortbread

I have to agree with Culinary Bear. The proportions were definitely off and the oven should be hotter, around 400 degrees is what I do. Good luck with your next batch and let us know if it turns out.
