  1. I still get 12 Cadbury cream eggs from my mom. One a month until next Easter! They are sickly sweet but I still love them. I remember coveting the sugar eggs when I was a kid, but they didn't seem to be that common here. It was chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. My mom would hide it all throughout our house and I would get up in the morning and just start hunting. By the time she finally got up I had found it all and was crashing from the sugar and ready for a nap....wait....she was brilliant....she had the whole morning to herself while I slept off the sugar high. Oh how I miss those Easters.
  2. This is why I share my bagels with no one! Especially the horrid women I work with.

    Rack of pork

My mom used to cook these all the time. Very simple, leave the fat on, because that's the best part, salt and pepper all sides, take some grainy mustard, rub it into the roast. Place roast on pan and stick in a 350 degree oven. Roast for about an hour (it may take a little longer than that depending on the thickness) Works everytime and the outside is crispy and flavourful and the meat is tender.
  4. When I saw Arne at the end of the night (for everyone else out there, that was after the 2 of us had been working well over 12 hours. My mom was on day 2 of that) I had to get him to take a picture of her face painting. It was so cute!! Thanks Arne. Scary thing, her husband didn't even notice. Yes Lorna, she is young. Now, about that butt. I was hoping to log on here when I got home and start drooling over the finished product, but...where's the butt? How did it turn out? In the end, how long was the smoking process? Did it fall apart? How did the brisket turn out? Oh yeah, how was the game?
  5. Of course not!! Of course, this is coming from the woman that is always single at these things.
  6. At the moment I am making an omlette with mushrooms, onion, bacon and some cheese. With that I will have a sausage and some tater tots. For desert, fresh strawberries with a gaufre de liege from Patisserie LeBeau. This is the only cooking that I have done so far this week.
  7. Badasses, Darling. We're Badasses . I don't think I really need to say where I've eaten because, well, everyone else has already stated it. Only difference, while working the tasting room at WineFest last night, I buttered up the Freybe's guys to get sausages and pepperoni for the SA "Box" area . Nothing like food to make a bunch of people who have been working for 12 hours and drinking for much of that time happy. The Turkey and Chicken sausages were really quite good. Tonight, god only knows. The last time I worked Wine Fest, on the last night of the show all of the boys decided that it was their mission to get me drunk Hopefully tonight I can just stick to food.
  8. CONGRATULATIONS Chris!!!!!!
  9. Okay Tricia. You were castigating Arne earlier?! Have you started drinking already? ← OK, let me clarify.... What style are these cheeses? There, that better....the drinking doesn't start for another couple hours, wait, maybe I should have a glass of wine while I get ready...
  10. Ummm...you know, if you have any left over cheese, I will be just downstairs. Working. Unable to get away for food or drink Seriously though, what types of cheeses are they? And yes, I know their french.
  11. The little fish market in Edgemont Village makes spectacular sushi, but of course, it's take out.
  12. Man, that is some impressive eating girl!! I had two bites of my waffle and that was all I could handle. And I thought I had hollow legs?! Ummm...what kind of cookies?
  13. There really hasn't been alot rain Jen. If it's any consolation, it was raining while we were eating lunch
  14. How on EARTH do you guys do it!! I had 2 sample pieces and haven't even been able to open up my bag of waffles. The few bites that I did have were absolutely delectable. I've never had true Belgium waffles and I have to say I may be hooked. That pearl sugar is such a nice contrast.
  15. ^Corrected! I AM SO SORRY! Blame it on the coffee! A. ← Thank you Really, it was just a great opportunity to use Neil's classic line. Thank you Neil
  16. On the positive side, all of our favorite places won't be overrun by people who read the Straight and decided to check it out.
  17. That's pretty good! Famous Foods has such an amazing selection of organic/specialty products and most of their prices are extremely reasonable. I must head down that way again.
  18. Ahhh, I wish it was as simple as too much sodium. It's an extreme sensitivity that has caused me to take some serious pain killers. But as I said..THOSE JUICY PORK BUNS ARE DIVINE!!!! Canuckle, any ideas of what I can do with the soy cured beef? One order is a helluvalot and I've never even seen before let alone eaten it. It has quite a mild taste but I don't think I can eat it on it's own. I'd some suggestions.
  19. I have a feeling there may not be sun, but hey, it's Vancouver, it's only water. Liquid Sunshine! That Halibut looks fantastic. Grilling fish is something that I just can't get to work. I tried it once and the fish just shredded. Did you oil the grill?
  20. Tuesday night I went to HSG for a dinner to take home. Neil was given free reign and I ended up with the chicken (I still haven't figured out what was stuffed inside but it did have a cranberry gravy) with mashed potatoes and veggies. Oh SO GOOD!!! I also took an order of the famous and wonderful gingerbread for dessert. While waiting for dinner I had a negroni for the first time. My new favorite drink!! It was so tasty and perfect for a late night at work. Wednesday (no, I haven't cooked this week) I picked up sushi from from Sushi ToGo in Oakridge. So much better than I thought it would be, of course, not as good as Toshi, but I certainly reccomend it. Tonight: Shanghai Yan Yun. After all this talk of Juicy pork buns, I had to try them. First, Wow!! I also picked up a package of their frozen Turnip cake, again WOW! I also ordered some food off their menu and I picked up the fried broad noodle, really tasty but I have most of the order left since I was so busy eating the pork buns, and I also got an order of the Soyed Beef with Five Spice. That one was a bit of a surprise when I got it home. I didn't ask what it was, I just ordered it. Um.....does anyone have any suggestions for half a loin of soy cured beef? It's really good, but certainly not what I was expecting. I will definitely order from there again, but unfortunately, their dim sum has way too much MSG for me. I knew it would have some but I am definitely paying for dinner. Fortunately it was damn tasty. There are always trade-offs. More to come. I'm working Winefest Fri and Sat, so no cooking for me.
  21. Famous Foods does have them, but their dried fruit is very expensive for what you get. If you don't mind paying around $10 for a rather small amount go for it, they have a great selection of unsulphered and organic dried fruit.
  22. What's better are their little petit Fours. A little booze soaked cake, fruit jam, MASS amounts of buttercream. I think I may have to pick some up this week and stick them in freezer.
  23. If the Bon/Macy's has a sale on, you could get a really good deal. Some of their sale prices in their Home Store blow me away. They had a full set of All Clad about $200 or $300 less than what it is here at Christmas time. This is the one I have except it only came in white. If you spend a day down there you can easily bring back $50 without having to pay duty. Just smile sweetly and bat your eyelashes. It's been working for me for years
