  1. Ahhh...The Normandy. I wonder if they lost there lease? There was talk when I lived in that area that they would be shutting down because of the changes to South Granville and the Normandy just wouldn't fit in. I haven't been by in a while, anyone else? I had a very memorable breakfast there right after I met my ex. A morning I will not soon forget.
  2. Tricia, I think that all Vancouver eGulleters are well aware of the massive understatement employed in your above-noted post. ← Yes, and this time I'll be out with the woman that taught me all that I know. Oh, Portland is in big trouble
  3. This is fantastic. Thank you for the suggestions. i am compiling a list of places we need to go and what we need to see. We're going to be staying at the Mark Spencer hotel, so what would the closest restaurant be? Walking distance would be nice, since we will be imbibing in a wee bit of wine. It is a girl's weekend. Coffee will also be a must on Tuesday morning. Thank you for the site. Oh, I only wish we had more time.
  4. Both Helen's and Bert's have been around for at least 40 years. Helen's probably longer than that.
  5. Helen's on Main and 25th, but I've only ever been in for breakfast. I think they're known for their decor. Then there's Bert's on Main and 13th. There is always a meat special of some kind posted in the window. Never been, but it's always packed.
  6. I have to disagree with you here. This neighborhood is changing dramatically. One can just look at the rise in house prices in the last 4 years. This is becoming a neighborhood with more disposable cash and being central, it will bring in alot of customers from downtown, Yaletown, Kerrisdale and Point Grey. If they're smart, they'll have free parking. I think this is going to be a huge blow for Capers. If this goes in around the same time as the Caper's on 16th, I don't think Caper's will survive. WH is big enough to compete and when the first opened the WVan location, it was much cheaper than Caper's, Meinhardt's and even Choices. (don't know if it still is, I can't be bothered to cross the Lion's Gate just for groceries)
  7. Do you happen to have a link to the story? I would love to read it. This wine will be available in Vancouver in about a week and half and the name still stands, so I think it would be an interesting read. Of the bottles you photographed, which vintage is which?
  8. Bullseye is on SE 21st, but we'll (I'll) pretty much go anywhere for good food. We're not looking for anything high-end, maybe tapas or small plates so we can share, although we would share anything anyway, good wine list, etc... I still haven't found a good place to stay, any suggestions on that one?
  9. My mom and I will be driving down to Portland on a Monday in two weeks and heading back up to Van on the Tuesday. Most of Monday will be spent at the Bullseye glass factory (my mom's a glass artist) and would like to know where we should go for food. We'll probably leave early Monday morning (too early for my liking, but I can sleep in the car) and head straight down the I-5. Anything interesting that we should hit on the way down or the way back? Any and all suggestions would be great. I haven't been to Portland in 15 years, so this should be fun.
  10. That block is in amazing condition, considering it was probably neglected. The block that used to sit in my grandpa's butcher shop and is now in my dad's wine cellar, has a huge "hole" in the top from 40 years of use, but it's very far from being damaged. What a wonderful thing to have for your kitchen. Excellent find.
  11. Unfortunately no, I tend to avoid the Globe.
  12. I gave up on the site. Truly annoying!!!!! Is there anymore info?
  13. I think that's a wise plan and then tell him that this was all part of the evening out. "what do you mean you didn't want to wait at the bar...drinking with meeee,? " Good luck! I've been in your shoes and well, I gave up.
  14. I used to love Christie's in when I lived in Oak Bay. My staple was their Ceaser which wasn't loaded with artificial tasting dressing. My other haunt used to be the Rose and Thorn, but since it closed, I haven't replaced it with another pub.

    Prime Rib

Hear! Hear! Susan. That is exactly what I do when I cook a roast like this. You must have leftovers. At Christmas I had to make sure that we had at least 3 ribs, one for me, one for my mom and one for her husband. You've got to have that midnight snack.

    Prime Rib

This is the Prime Rib that I did at Christmas. Half of it fed 12 people with half of that leftover. So, you probably won't need anything more than 2 ribs, but make sure that you go to a very good butcher. You want the bones left intact!! Most butchers cut the roast off the bones and then tie the bones back on. You want to be able to trim the fat yourself, that way you will have trimmings that can be rendered for yorkshire pudding, or anything else that beef fat is good for. Look for marbling. The marbling is key to a good piece of meat. If you can find dry aged, don't hestitate over the price, you will not regret a dry aged Prime Rib. This was the finished product cooked very rare. It was melt in your mouth good. Enjoy Mother's Day. Sounds like someone is getting spoiled
  17. Since this was my first foray into Burger Club, I can only compare this to the last burger I had at Moderne. Ummm...it doesn't compare. I also had the Hickory burger, but considering how often I eat this kind of thing, the patty was just the right thickness for me. It certainly wasn't a small patty as mine was hanging off the bun. The bun was great, but I do like mine to be a little toasted. It was messy, which is the best part. You shouldn't have a burger and not end up with juices running down your chin. This hickory sauce added a nice smokiness and well, you can't go wrong with bacon of any form. This had Canadian bacon on it. The fries... Best fries I've ever had in a restaurant. They were brilliant. Thin, crisp, moist....I agree that they could have used a tad more salt but the malt vinegar and pesto mayo took care of that issue. Overall, a very good burger. I would go back for it.
  18. Since I was raised mostly by my Grandmother (my mom's mom) we both had the same influences growing up. My mom garnered my grandmother skills at creating the most amazing stocks and developing down home traditional Scottish dishes. I on the other hand, was taught the intricacies of making shortbread when I when I was very very little. My grandmother was brilliant in the kitchen, although she really like butter and fat, and my love for food came from her. My mom is my partner in the kitchen. The two of us can go into a fairly empty kitchen and create something spectacular and we have we have this little dance that we seem to do that can't really be described. I love cooking with my mom and I can't imagine a better way to spend a day.
  19. I have a feeling those may not make it through Customs.
  20. The last spit roasted pig I had was at the family reunion that I went to 2 years ago. First off, 1 rather large pig is not enough for 150 drunk Ukranians, that are farmers. It roasted for about 8 hours after being injected with the marinade that I made for it. Ummm....there was a lot of alcohol flowing during that week and I can't remember what went into the marinade, tequila and garlic is all I remember. This is what happens when you have a bottle of red wine with your morning coffee and then go the ranch with boys Anyhow, the pig was absolutely heavenly. You could smell it roasting from my Aunt's farm next door (which means about 2K away) The skin was crispy, the meat moist and tender. I do have pictures that I will scan this week for everyone to drool over. My dad, the butcher, had the honours of carving the beast, and me, the photographer for the event, were sealed into this tent-type thingy for keeping out bugs out. There was pork fat everywhere!! And on everything. I had to wash my camera! I can certainly say that I am looking forward to another feast like that, whenever it may be. Hmmmm...I wonder if I could talk my dad into a pit in his backyard. He does like fire.....
  21. Unfortunately, these are absolutely not Yaletown type people. Does anyone have any suggestions for the 'burbs, not necessarily Thai, but something just a little different? Good unusual food that my mom and I will enjoy and nothing too fancy for the rest of the bunch. BTW, the in-laws live in Langley and my mom's in North Delta. Driving will be a given no matter where we go.
  22. My mom just called to aske where we are taking her MIL for Lunch on Sunday. I'm completely stymied and need help. Last year we went to Cafe Katzenjammer and everyone loved it, so that is about as high end and froufy as my mom's inlaws will get. It can't be expensive and definitely not high-end. My Mom and I were thinking maybe Thai food. Does anyone know a thai place open this Sunday? Help!>
  23. I would take advantage of all the fresh fruit that will be available around Mission in the summer months. All the blueberries, rasberries, strawberries....Maybe some crumbly-bar-type thing. Muffins made with fresh berries. One of my faves is made at Bean around the World in the summer; Rasberry and white chocolate oatmeal.
  24. Hawker's has been a favorite of mine since it opened. Dinner for two is usually $13. Try the mee goren, the gado gado and...well, try everything at least once. My grandma and her friend now love this place too.
  25. Which is why Noah was so happy to play with you That kid is smitten. Wanted absolutely nothing to do with me..."I'm waiting for Lorna!!"
