Thanks John. I actually decided to lightly marinade them in some garlic, evoo, port vinegar, lemon juice and chili flakes. I will have to get a frying pan going, I'll just have to live with melting while cooking. I'll report back with the final creation.

I really want to do a light seafood pasta tonight for dinner. It's about 30 degrees here and that's about as much as I can tackle in this heat. (Is there a melting smiley) I'm in the process of making a small batch of lobster stock for the sauce, but what on earth should I do with the squid? I would like to just toss everything together almost like a pasta salad. Anyone have any ideas? I have a very well stocked pantry, so I can add just about anything. My brain must be melting in the heat, I can't come up with anymore ideas.

Yikes! What's so bad about this dish? I haven't had it yet, but have just received a beautiful cut of Copper River salmon (48 hr packaging)... and the offending cedar plank. I plan to cook it (in about an hour) with no rub, just salt. I understand that Pinot Noir is its partner in crime. Is this an abomination too or just a Sideways thing? Am I committing cullinary suicide? What are the survival rates? ← You must understand that on the West Coast every single restaurant has had some version of Cedar Plank Salmon on the menu for the past 15 years. (At least it's been that long here) We've been inundated with it and 9 times out of 10, the salmon has been massacred. If you are eating really good fresh salmon, you lose all of the sweet flavour of the flesh if it's not done properly. I think alot our attitude towards planked salmon has to do with the fact that we are very spoiled on this side of the water. We have some of the best salmon available to us. If you have never had it before, then it definitely isn't a tired trend. It can be very good, just make sure not to overcook your fish. You want it med-rare to Med. Anything more and it can dry out real fast.

Really good coffee. That does it everytime. Also, fresh, plump, juicy cherries that pop when you bite into them. When they are really good, I get goose bumps.

Ahhh...so that's where they went. Spring Garden was my favorite when i first moved into that neighborhood 8 years ago. I'll have to try Ning Du.

The new india buffet is great. Arne & I were there for lunch about a month ago and I was truly impressed.

Lee, I too grew up here and have never been to the Rodeo. I don't look at this as a bad thing. It is Cloverdale, so I'm thinking the food would be along the same lines as the PNE.

If they are in a bag, just plop the whole thing into a sink full of cold water. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes. I do this all the time. I will even just plunk them, out of the bag, into to cold water and then dry them off before cooking.

The Parm at costco has a thick Vaccum sealed plastic on it. Despite that, it is pretty good parm. My mom uses it, mainly because she goes through so much.

I would never ever take the day off work to cook dinner for a big date. Which would include driving around the city for about 4 hours to source all the ingredients for dinner. OK....I would. I show off all the time when it comes to food. When I was in High School, I was razzed all the time by my friends. The same friends that would heat up jarred pasta sauce and costco pasta for dinner. I have a feeling they still eat like that too. It's second nature for me. Capricorn born in the year of the Dragon. I'm a wee bit of an over-achiever

Well, reservations have been made and of course we changed our minds yet again. My mom had to replace the tires on her car this week, so decided we would spend a little less on our hotel room than we intitially planned. So, now we are staying at the Washington Park Inn, it looks like a great place to be with the dogs. What is there in that area? It looks like it's a bit of a suburb with a park but I can't find much info online. Anyone know the area well?

It looks like same premise as the Bravo show about the Vancouver Restaurant scene. "Godiva's"

Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 1)

Finally I have something to post. Having been absent from the mafia for the past 4 weeks due to work issues, I missed out on a lot of wonderful food. But I'm now back. Last Thursday Arne and I went to Salade de Fruits for lunch. Oh My....what a lunch. I had the Moules et Salade. The mussels were fantastic, buttery, rich, garlicky, sweet...I had to get a second order of bread because the sauce was just to damn good. I was very tempted to just drink from the bowl, but I did restrain myself. Arne had the steak Frites and from the taste that I had, it was very very good. The steak had a ginger sauce with it and the frites were perfectly crispy and thin. Saturday evening my best friend and I finally got together for dinner. Since he had been at a conference all day and was tired, we opted for sushi at Toshi's. I love that this place is less than 1/2 a block from my home. We had a rather large assortment of food including one piece of Toro for me, although I think may have converted him. We started with the Spicy Agedashi Tofu, the best I've had, then an order of the veggie gyoza. What makes them green? They again, are the best I've had, I must try the seafood ones next time I'm in. THen it was onto an assortment of sushi. The special roll was Smoked Salmon and Mango, the flavours were perfectly balanced. It's really hard to describe the match, but if you get a chance to try it, I highly recomend it. Cal had to have a Dynomite roll and I had to have a Spicy Tuna, which I should have ordered extra spicy, there was a spicy scallop roll, and another new one for me, Ika Taka Kyu, which is squid, cucumber and Tobiko. Wow! This was a very textural roll. As Cal said, you couldn't tell which was popping in your mouth, the textures were all so similar. Very good! We also had the Kani nigiri and I had a Toro Nigiri. The Toro was divine. Melt in your mouth buttery! The only downer of the evening was the service. I love Toshi's but apparently we were sitting in some sort of vortex. We sat with empty dishes on our table for about 45 min. Every single person that sat down at the same time as us or even half an hour after left the restaurant before our dishes were even removed. It became a joke after a while. She would practically run past our table. It was certainly good for a laugh. Today I once again joined the mafia for lunch at Vintropolis. There really isn't much to say. I had the steak frites and added about 1/4 of the salt shaker to my plate (the others at the table had the other 3/4). It also took 40 min for us to get our food. At least the company was great. -
Bacon wrapped corn I think I know what I'm doing as soon corn is in season here. OH MY.......

This is my biggest annoyance. I am so sensitive to fragrances that I will actually leave an establishment. If I have food in front of me, I will ask them to wrap it up quickly because I need to leave. I have migraines that are triggered by most if not all perfumes and fragrances, some food scents too, like orange oil, and when they start, there is absolutely nothing I can do but leave. That's why I tend not to go out very much, it just makes it easier.

Fine Cooking has been a favorite of mine for many years. At the same time I started buying Fine Cooking, I was also able to get Eating Well, which I used to steal ideas from all the time. Then it just disappeared about 4 years ago. Well, it's back and I managed to find my first copy of their new incarnation and I have to say that I am impressed. There are a few ideas that I will indeed take away from it.

Vancouver/Western Canada Ingredient Sources Topic

That same gentleman has some wasabi plants as well. Unfortunately, they are better outside, so I didn't get one. I just have to hope that the one my mom got has a big enough harvest for the two of us. His other herbs are gorgeous too. I picked up some Lemon Thyme, Pineapple Sage and Grenoble Basil yesterday. -
This is an easy one and a recent love too. I used to be horrified at the smell of stinky cheese and never ever thought I could touch it. I even had a hard time with blue cheese dressing. Then in November, at the big Vancouver event, one of my tables mates had a plate of Stilton and offered me a piece. It was a revelation!!! Glorious, simply glorious! I know make sure that I always have stinky cheeses in my fridge and the stinkier the better!!

Well, it has now been decided that we are going to head down on Sunday and do wine tour as well. What wineries are visits? My mom wants to go to Duck Pond and from there, we have no idea what else is worth visiting. And, since we are now going down for 3 days, we are taking our dogs with us. Any restaurants downtown with a patio that is casual enough the dogs can sit tied up outside with us?

And here I thought it was bad that we had cow's eyes in our fridge. (I used to work in an Ophthalmology centre)

Where the hell do you work?!! I think that would terrify me more than anything. I would definitely be looking at my co-workers a little sideways after that. Yikes!!!!
