  1. Deb, I'm with you. I've only eaten at 6 of them. Boy, that's really really sad.
  2. Same with the Delta location. "turn-Your-Lights-On" or you can just sit in your car in a daze because you drank too much the night before and have the dogs bark until someone notices you. That's what happened the last time I was there. (My mom and I should never try and do things together when we are both hungover, it's very ugly)
  3. It's not quite in the city but my families been going there for at least 25 years, Uncle Herbies in Ladner. It's owned by an old Scottish fellow and the fish and chips are always fantastic. Especially the Halibut. Go Fish is good, but if you're looking for something a little more "traditional", this is the place to go. So far, I haven't been able to find anything in the city that comes close, plus the ambiance of Uncle Herbies just makes you want to stay forever. Hmmm...I'm thinking the Mafia may have to go for a weekend road trip. If you go, you must order the mushy peas; best in the city.
  4. According to the fishmonger, the Fraser won't be open for a few more weeks and it sounds like it's going to be another very very small run. I don't know how much is going to end up in Toronto, but hopefully you will get something there.
  5. My mom and I had a girls night with really good wine and fresh Wild Sockeye right off the docks. It was a very happy Canada Day.
  6. Check the Dinner thread. The end result is there. Oh man was it good! And I have half of one of those puppies in my freezer.

    Dinner! 2005

Dinner last night was fresh wild Sockeye Salmon that was picked up at the docks. My mom and I discovered a few years ago that the sticks and giant flowers from dill make a wonderful bed for salmon and they freeze really well. Sockeye Salmon with wild rice sauteed with celery, onions and garlic, and steamed spinach from the garden with sesame oil, sesame seeds and feta. And of course, we can't for get the animals: This is what they are having for dinner tonight. And my mom's cat after having his very first taste of Sockeye
  8. I spent yesterday with my very hungover mother (the first of many birthday parties this week), and it was virtually impossible getting her to make up her mind about dinner. Well, lucky for us, on our way back to home, I spotted a sign that said "Fresh Salmon". To hell with home, we were going to the docks. My mom lives on 96th in Delta, just minutes from the SurDel "Port", so when the Sockeye is in, the signs are all over the street. This was the first day that the boats were in with stock. And what beautiful stock it is Our fishees waiting for me to break them down. Look how clear the eyes are. They were still stiff when we put them in the car. Isn't he pretty Have I mentioned that I love Sockeye this fresh. The price was pretty good, $5.50 a lb, so two came to $45. To give some perspective, I picked up a Sockeye Fillet at Granville Island on Monday and it was $14.99 a lb. So, if you're looking for Sockeye and you have freezer space, this is the place to go. It's a very small fishing vessel, he is only bring in small amounts and usually is sold out with 48 hours of being back. Right now, he's fishing is Barclay (? I think that was it, I was too busy ooooing over the big box of fish)Sound and he only sells at the docks.
  9. The really good restaurants are actually on the other block. I think that basement goes under a few streets. It's quite creepy if you're walking through it during a "slow" period.
  10. The restaurants in the basement of that block are fantastic. I used to get take-out from Aki and I also tried another one of the Japanese restaurants down there. I think there were 3 in the basement area.
  11. I thought it was pretty good for what I was looking for and yes, I am a huge carnivore. As far as I'm concerned, how can you go wrong with meat on a stick. The salad bar is decent and the feijoada is pretty tasty too. Enjoy, it's fun, not gourmet.
  12. I can't see a good butcher wrapping and then weighing the meat. That's just wrong in my books and I think you should call them on it. It may not make a difference on something that's say 2.99 a lb, but about that Prime Rib that's 22.99 a lb. I'm not paying for the bloody wrapping. Sorry...ranting....must stop. My biggest dissapointment in life is seeing the current state of butcher shops. It truly saddens me, I mean, you can barely find a butcher shop with sawdust on the floors. I would definitely say something to them and don't hestitate to bring it up. Deb, they should be using a very thin piece of wax paper that scale is adjusted for. At least that's what used to happen in my dad's shop and that's what Windsor still does. **Edited to add the bit for Deb.
  13. Hey, I have a bottle of Baby Duck in my wine rack that my grandma bought for my Christening. Hmmm...anyone think it's aged well

    Mom's 50th

I think we have a keeper with mini saffron risotto cakes with duck breast. Yum!! I also like the idea of the crab on the endive. Crab is extremely inexpensive here right now and I think it definitely has to be apart of the menu. I'm also getting a hanger steak that I can grill, I'll have a crudite platter with veggies from my mom's garden. A spinach salad, again from the garden. I'll get my mom's husband to make his BBQ'ed bacon wrapped oysters and I think maybe a couple more salads and some bread and I think that's it. Thanks for all the ideas, I'll take pictures to capture the chaos of all this.
  15. McDonald's pizza. It was tasty and not greasy and slimey like everything else that's on the menu.
  16. Dillybravo, sorry to say, but Traditional Fayre is now closed. Much to my dismay. When it became TF though it didn't have much in the way of steaks, mostly traditional Scottish health food. Now, the previous owners of the Auld Scottish Larder (same spot, they retired) had the best aged meat in the city. The leg of lamb that I bought from them right before they closed was legendary.
  17. Wise move. There would suddenly be an onslaught of eGulleters looking for crab. Now, you said they lived.......

    Basa

I usually describe it as a cross between Sole and halibut but with a much firmer flesh. You can use almost any technique on it and will still hold together. I quite enjoy it.
  19. I didn't see any garlic when I was there, but I did get a beautiful pound of BC Cherries. I have to go every Wed just to get my local cherry fix. I also picked up some lamb chops from Jay Springs and some salmon from the Seafood guys. The market this year seems much better than last year. I'm not sure if the vendors are different or if the products are better but I actually spent money this time. A great way to relax after work.
  20. Just think of it as an excuse to get a bigger smoker
  21. Freybe's is actually located in Langley now and I think they rank pretty high here and everywhere else. OK, so I'm a little biased, my dad works for them and I always have sausages in my freezer, but when it's time to buy some for any reason, that's what I buy. My favorite is the wine chorizo on the grill, with sauteed onions on a soft bun. MMMMM....so good...
  22. Add some roasted garlic to that and you can pretend that it's healthy again
  23. I find the Lobster Man on Granville Island quite reasonable and that's where I always buy my Lobster. Crab I tend to have at Birch Bay when my Grandma gets it fresh from one of her neighbours.
  24. When I worked a block away, I used to buy my meat there and the prices were fantastic, the quality pretty decent, just remember that some cuts won't look very good. I haven't been by in a couple of years, so I'm not sure if it's still open.
  25. The last seduction meal I made was a leftover hamburger that I warmed up for him. It was an imprompto meal and he thought he was just getting crackers and cheese. Worked very very well Others before that, Chocolate pecan pie that I made for a 3rd date, Chocolate chip cookies for a first Valentines Day, he asked me to move in with him shortly after that. Seduction meals that have been made for me have included lemon chicken and roasted potatoes, since this was "technically" a first date, I didn't even know this guy could cook and it blew me away and ended up living with him. The last guy I dated made me dinner one night which consisted of something, a ceaser salad that he drizzled the bacon fat on before he dressed it, and something else. I made some sort of noise as I was watching him make this and he was suddenly very concerned that maybe this wasn't a good. I had to reassure him that it was He also made me breakfast and brought me coffee in bed It's such a shame he had to move away.
