  1. We must remember the Afghani food is very different from Persian food. I remember the persian food that I had as a child thanks to the housekeeper of a really good friend of my mom's, and 17 years later, I can still taste it. I was having a discussion this afternoon with a friend of mine from Afghanistan (actually, he was showing me pictures from a dinner that he was at recently) and we started discussing restaurants. He suggested Afghan Choban for good authentic food. This is also one of the only Afghani bakeries in Vancouver. I'll post a link when I get home. For Persian food, I would suggest anyone of the locations on Lonsdale around 15th. They are all fantastic.
  2. This is my favorite thread! It just kept going and going, and kept getting weirder and weirder. I love it.Kung Pow Phat Soy, Only in Vancouver.
  3. But these two are the most fun to say!! If you see a woman at the Vergelegen table with a stuffed parrot on her shoulder, that would be my mother The last wine fest that I spent a significant amount of time at also had South Africa as the theme and that was 3 years ago now. As far as I was concerned, that show had some of the most interesting wines, and this one promises to be similar. I hear that Vergelegen is touted as one of the best wines of South Africa and distribution is seriously limited (the only stock in the LDB at the moment would be for wine fest) because of small production. I'd love to know if anyone outside of Vancouver has tried it/knows of it.
  4. I am so unbelievably thrilled that this is 2 blocks from home!!! Going tomorrow morning for my coffee.
  5. No ← It is here Yesterday: Homemade perogies just like my grandma makes with some kalena(I don't think there is a correct way to spell this and my ukrainian is really really bad) sauce. mmmm.....good....
  6. I was just laughing about this too as I saw that Luciano had dined there as well. Umm...I think we have determined where the majority of the Vancouver eGulleters live. I think most of us are within a 20 block radius of Tomato Cafe The only eGullet free evening out I've had was last night. My mom and I had a Mother/Daughter night and ended up at HSG for dinner. I had to introduce her to the wonders of Hanger. Brian was in the kitchen last night and did a fantastic job on our steak. We also had the Mussels Diablo, they were good, but I think I prefer mine. Sorry Neil. We left without having dessert, actually, there was absolutely no possible way we were eating anymore food and I have gingerbread in my fridge from Tuesdays lunch anyway. All in all, a good evening. I love nights that my mom and I can spend together without her husband and his daughter. Go Fish with Arne, Joie and Ian the day before I was struck down with walking pneumonia. I had the halibut and chips, wow! Fantastic. I was also able to try Arne's chowder and I would gladly wait in an hour line for that soup. Tomato Cafe, again with Joie, Ian and Noah (planned) then Van Lee, Tricia and Ryan (unplanned). I had the eggs benny, while watching Joie and Ian carefully cut up and place every piece of fruit over every mm of the waffle. And Noah, I love a child that eats like that. HSG on Tuesday for lunch, (OK, so there's a bit of a theme here) while everyone else was having the Lamb/Yam combo, I had the pear and stilton salad and the Prawn and scallop appetizer. Very good. The pear and stilton salad is my favorite. I think that's it. I missed out on a more than a week of eating and I slowed down quite a bit. Going to have start changing that.
  7. The market is very political and if the vendors have a voice, which they do, absolutely nothing will change to make the market more appealing to locals.
  8. Hanger steak at the Hamilton Street Grill. I converted my mother this evening.
  9. Monsoon has gone down hill in recent years and I don't recomend it anymore. Five Point has great food and a pub like vibe. Hawker's is my favorite for Malaysian. Toshi's has the best sushi in the vicinity, they are on 16th just off Main. Pho Hoang for vietnamese, really good and cheap. The Main for greek food. Haven't been in a couple of years, but the last time I was there it was fantastic.
  10. Pear and stilton salad at the Hamilton Street Grill and Ling's flourless Chocolate cake. Damn that was good cake!!!! Lorna, I now know why you left your boyfriend a little sliver
  11. I don't think they are part of Starbucks but they have been around the suburbs for quite some time. I think they opened their first location (at least that I remember) in Delta about 15 years ago. We used to have coffees at their Sunshine Hills location when I was in High School and my mom used to buy their beans, that is until she discovered the wonders of JJ Bean. I noticed the first location in the city opened this past summer on Oak street. Speaking of JJ Bean, they are opening a new location on Main Street, right at the corner of 14th, directly across the street from Starbucks. I am so happy!!
  12. The Rickshaw is in the heart of Whalley. It's on King George Highway.
  13. My mom had another memory of both the Dragon Inn and the Rickshaw. She had several instances of food poisoning thanks to the Rickshaw and my Grandpa used to take the family to the Dragon Inn for special occasion meals. When it came time to order, he made sure that the table had some of that "coloured" wine!
  14. I ordered delivery from there during the blizzard of '96. I think that was right before they closed that location. I think it closed just a few weeks after that. Ah yes, memories. Edited because I had to add, the Dragon Inn was the only restaurant open during the blizzard and my boyfriend at the time had absolutely no food in the house, I think I spent an hour on the phone trying to find someplace in Burnaby that was actually open. The food was absolutely horrific and I there was something really wrong with it, something that made me almost vomit and phone them to get my money back. I can't for the life of me remember what happened. As for the Rickshaw, when I was in Brownies and Guides we used have these Mother Daughter group dinners and every year they would be held at the Rickshaw for the Buffet. I remember begging my mom not to go. I didn't want to be subjected to the food even at that young age. There was one Chinese restaurant in Delta that was legendary. Shum's. God how I miss that place. Absolutely nothing has come close to equaling and I've got some pretty good restaurants nearby. I always get teary eyed when I drive by the location on Scott Road, it's now the Delta Assist office. Since it closed 7 years ago it's been 2 Indian restaurants and a vacant lot. To this day, you can't get decent Chinese in Delta.
  15. Cafe Katzenjammer is fantastic. I think it's been open for a couple of years now and they have the most wonderful sausages. Definitely worth heading to for good German. It would be even better if you have a hangover.
  16. I think that was the only way you could get to Doll and Penny's. You had to be stumbling. My sister and I spent many an evening. My sister has quite a few embarassing stories from that place.
  17. I miss Il Paradiso. I was on the corner of Scott Road and 92nd in Delta, this really cheesy Italian restaurant but had the most wonderful food. I think the first time I was there was about 17 years ago and my family went so often that we were the regulars. My mom and I would hang out in the kitchen with the chef. We had many a special occasion there too. My 19th birthday, my mom and I went there for dinner and I got to order my first bottle of wine, legally. When my mom's divorce was final we headed up the street for yet another celebratory dinner. We always had good food, good wine and good company when we were there. It's now an Afghani restaurant and again my mom and I thought we would try it to see if it was any good. We were not expecting it to look exactly the same, but it does. Nothing has changed which was quite bizarre. The food was fabulous but certainly not the same.
  18. When you are so sick that you can barely move, breathe, swallow and all you can think about is food. What am I going to make, what do I have in the freezer, what do I have to buy, and to entertain yourself while sick at home you read cookbook after cookbook because there is nothing better than being curled up on the couch with a few dozen good books.
  19. ... which I still have in my fridge, along with two slices of the Pave. A. ← Um...Hi Arne, remember me your friend that couldn't make it due to a pneumonia-ey thingy! Truly, Lemoncurd WOW! that dessert looked spectacular, the presentation was gorgeous and I can only imagine that it tasted just as good as it looked, well I'm sure it tasted better than it looked. Can't wait for the next gathering.
  20. Thank you Neil for taking me down memory lane. My grandpa used to take me to the Big Scoop in Delta at least once a week. Yes, I too can still smell the place even though it closed about 15 years ago. Oh and on topic, I never did work in a restaurant, I catered with a friend of my mom's on Galiano.
  21. I will never again attempt to cook with walking pneumonia. Apparently, I'm a little loopy still. I really want comfort food right now and decided to make my grandma's rice pudding. Well at 3:30pm I put it in the oven at 300. Of course, I can't smell anything right now either. I just pulled a black lump out of my oven. I don't know how I'm ever going to get that dish clean. I'm going back to bed...
  22. The Original Solly's, Main street location, does have bialy's on occassion. It's not something that they have all the time, but they certainly have had them in the past.
  23. Their Jam and nut rugelach is the best ever, but I've only ever had consistency at their flagship location on Main. Also worth trying, their eggel. So fresh and light, it makes a great breakfast. Their bagels are the best in the city and I've done a side by side comparison with bagels from Montreal. I think Solly's are better, the ex thought the montreal ones were a little bit better, but he admitted that it was close. My mom will drive from Delta (or get me to pick it up and take it over) for bags of rugelach, which freeze very well. Oh and the Babka......so good. K, definitely heading down there today if I can move.
  24. My grandmother used to always tell me that eating porridge/soup/or any number of foods would put hair on my chest. My rebuttle; I'm a girl, why would I want hair on my chest. Oh, and she used to always do the cucumber thing and my mom and I decided to test this little bit of folklore. It seemed to make a difference.
  25. Wow! I'll be right in the middle of two Solly's locations. Ahhhh....I love this neighborhood. I could really go for some Jewish penicillan right now. Hmm..I think I know what lunch is tomorrow, if I can move. Welcome to the craziness DarkDante and emmalish!
