I picked up a pack of ume gum yesterday. It is amazing. It tastes just like ume with a bit of sweetness thrown in. The only down side is that the flavor doesn't last very long so it isn't great for a long chew, although that will make my dentist happy.

How old are your kids? That may change some suggestions. Sara is right, FDR at night is amazing, as is the Lincoln. Don't bother with the Library of Congress for such a short trip. Also, Holocust should be done at the end of your day. It is an important but heavy experience. I would skip Jaleo, walk a few extra blocks up and go to Zatinya butt he wait may be longer depending on the time of day. Don't forget to see the tiger cubs at the Zoo! Early morning or late afternoon is best for animal viewing. Just remember you have to walk back UP the hill if you start at the top by the main entrance. Have fun

I am not planning to post the menu But I will give vague outlines of the courses. Part of the fun of the Ray's event was not knowing exactly what was coming. I have wine recommendations from the Chef that she feels will go with the meal. The comments on the wine are straight out of an email: We are starting with a reception that sound like it will give people a chance to talk before the meal. *A dry white wine would be good here. Then a salad *Chef sides with Julia here, no wine with a salad Appetizers (for lack of a better word) Seafood and Landfood are involved hence the two suggestions *Chef loves a Pouilly Fuisse and a good burgundy or Cabernet Main Course *Chef recommends a soft quiet red Dessert There you go. Enjoy (If you really want to know more details and swear on your keyboard that you won't tell anyone else I will send more info )

Guess who? Okay, if I haven't heard from you by now I am assuming you are bailing on us. There are a few of you who were still making up their minds. Time to decide. Ummmm, yeah. Mediterranean Café off of Wisconsin by the half built tower. Used to go there during lunch when I was in high school to get the Shish Taook. Cheesecake Factory, again because of high school. I was serenaded their on my 18th birthday before our first and only semiformal. It is $42 a head which includes tax, tip and PayPal fees. I have not heard the latest update on the menu, but the last time I checked it involved very delicious, but not scary food. You won't be disappointed and nothing that would cause you to go running.

During undergrad my best friend went to RU. She lived right on College Ave. a block or two from the grease trucks. Second semester of my sophmore year I drove down every other weekend. Saturday night/Sunday morning we always ended the evening there. That was some good grease.

When I was about 7 or 8 a friend's much older sister took us out for dinner in Chinatown. After leaving us alone at the table to go to the bathroom (we felt very grown up) she walked back to the table picked up our coats and Told us we were leaving. On our way out she gave me one of the best pieces of advice I have ever received. She said "Girls, If you don't want to pee in their bathroom then you definitely don't want to eat from their kitchen."

I've spent the past few hours trying to imagine my grandmother in an Iron Chef battle and had a good laugh. Actually, my grandmother who passed away two years ago would have been perfect. She was the quintessential Jewish Grandmother, poo poo poo (that keeps the evil spirits away). I could see her going up against someone's Nona in a soup battle. Matzah ball v. Italian Wedding. What about an ethinic sort of $40 a day? Have a specific amount, say $30. Then each episode find a local specialist from the cuisine de jour to put together a menu that fits into your pricepoint. You could visit local ethnic markets and with your specialist do your basic "Intro to ......." in the first segement while walking around the market. Then it is back to their kitchen to prepare meals.
