  1. Frankly, considering the demographic most of us fit into this whole thread is ironic.

    Dinner! 2004

    Homemade chicken soup with alphabets
  3. I thought it was something with my computer. That I missed a page or something.
  4. I had a wonderful meal at Kinkead's today with Chef Shogun and his roommate. The menu is not large, three appetizers, three mains and two desserts, but full of dishes I would have ordered anyway. I started with the cohog clam chowder. It was perfect. Creamy, clammy, full of potato and onion. Floating on top was a hush puppy. While it was the perfect way to sop up some of the broth, it was hard to cut in half. Someone over there is reading eG. My main dish, a soft shell crab, was accompanied by hush puppies and tasso ham, among other things. The soft shell was on the small side, but perfectly fried. It was accompanied by a sauce, but I have no idea what it was. The tasso ham made the whole dish a bit saltier than I would have liked, but not enough so that I did not enjoy it. For dessert we all had the chocolate soufflé cake. It was sublime. The inside was oozing with molten chocolate. The rest of the cake was also wonderful, but paled in comparison to the molten chocolate. It was served with a scoop of melting vanilla ice cream that sat on a bed of loosely whipped cream. All in all, an excellent RW meal. Despite the fact that we were clearly there for RW and much younger than most of the other patrons, we were treated perfectly. Our servers were as gracious as they could be and did not seem disgruntled by their crazy week. Next, it's lunch at Firefly. I am eating well this week.
  5. There's a pool of drool on my keyboard. I've got an ameture question: Does anyone get to eat all this when the judging is over?
  6. I am a huge fan of rum and cokes on a hot evening. Putting it in cans would have made life a lot easier back in my undergrad days

    Dinner! 2004

a Parmesan and flat leaf parsley omelet
  8. Busboy, thanks! I think mojitos at home are some of the best. I'm headed to a mojito-inspired dinner thing on Sat and I'm in charge of the cocktail. Will file report . All thanks due to the Mrs, who discovered the drink in Denver and, like Marco Polo bringing noodles to Italy, carried the recipe back to DC, where we have made it our own. Tell the Mrs. I want a rain check. I'll even bring my special corporate mint and cucumbers.
  9. The pointy end is in my left hand, the part that was attached to the stalk in my right. Right to left. Either typewriter or round and round. It is not uncommon to switch mid stream. One row of kernals at a time, sometimes. No butter or salt, unless its tasteless. Then a lot of butter and salt. Ice Queen is my new favorite. (By the way, corn is one of the messiest veggies to sell!)
  10. Glad to hear he is feeling better. What do you put in your electroclyte solution?
  11. Before reading this thread I knew very little about egg saftey. I buy my eggs from the farmer I work for, but that's because they taste better and I would rather give him my money than some chain supermarket. But I never gave much thought as to why we Americans are nutty about pasturized eggs. Reading this thread seems to be the perfect example of the differences between the food philosophies of Europe and the US. Frankly, I think Europe is still doing it right. In Europe the emphasis is placed on fresh, local ingredients that will only last a few days. Here in the US the emphasis is placed on the cheapest brand possible lasting as long as possible. It does not surprise me that in our bigger, faster, longer world over here we are subject to food borne illnesses that are not an issue elsewhere in the world. I wonder what percentage of Americans eat eggs that are less than a week old? I bet it is not that high.

    Dinner! 2004

I cooked dinner for a friend who is house sitting for my parents. It was great to have someone else to cook for. We had oven roasted corn, butterleaf lettuce salad with homemade vinegarette, and clams and shrimp steamed in white wine and garlic with a homemade Thai cocktail sauce. For dessert I broiled blueberries. My friend had his over vanilla ice cream but I ate mine plain.
  13. Where in SE do you think deserves to be on the list. Other than possibly Marty's, I can't think of anyplace that is worthy of being mentioned. The dining scene in NE and SE is somewhat lacking when compared to other areas. I also think it is important to take into consideration the target audience for the magazine. Their target audience probably does not venture far past the Hill. The revitilazation of 8th St. SE and the Naval Area in SW could help the restuarant scene some, but I am not holding my breath.
  14. I don't really think any of these places would be up for this... They are when the softball team from my office goes. We've never had a problem. Hill types mingling with the kickball and softball teams. They are oftern from the same offices. Now I think I live on a different Hill... There are always tons of softball teams on those two blocks this time of year. When the weather is nice the outside tables fill up early though.
  15. I do a similiar recipe except I add red onions to the beans and garlic and when it is finished I spash on some balsamic vinegar.
  16. You know, I actually really like Guapo's for what it is (does that make me a bad person?). My biggest problem with them is that I always leave smelling like a fajita. The same thing happens at Cactus. Guapos is best for sitting on the deck and drinking margaritas on sunny days. Eunny, we will still love you if you have to eat there
  17. The Whole Foods bulk spices tend to be higher priced than the co-op options, although they win for convience.
  18. She needs to show off her mojito talents at the next eG picnic, if not sooner.
  19. My parents are going to be in Vancouver next week for their anniversary. My sister and I would like to treat them to an excellent Chinese or Japanese meal. Where should I send them? I wish price is no object, but I need to keep it under $100 for two. Thanks!
  20. Toss 'em in evoo and finely diced garlic. Roast.
  21. Unfortunately I don't have a hand or stand mixer. There is just no more room in the kitchen for any more appliances! Someday, though. I think raspberry would be good too. I have found the strawberry flavor more pronounced after a few days compared to when they were 24 hrs. old. Is this just my pathetic taste buds? mktye, for your marshmallows (and bread, but that's another thread) I would even cross over the Potomac into your foreign territory stscam, I can't believe how cheap you sell your marshmallows for! Here in DC you could get at least twice that. The smores sound wonderful. Does the chocolate mask the flavor of the marshmallow? Have you tried them with the cinammon sugar covered grahms?
