  1. You had to go to another continent to get soft shells? How were they? Your report on the oysters is killing me. Are you inhaling them daily? You gave the guys some eye candy. When do the women get ours?
  2. I was dragged to Primanti Bros. this weekend. My friend discovered it down in Fla. and was as excited to go to Primanti as I was to go to Penzey's. Lucky for her Primanti's is open on Sunday. Unlucky for me, Penzey's is not When we walked in I went searching for my inner Holly Moore. Fortunately I found him, even though it wasn't in the food. If I was hung over, or a current (or former) teenage boy, I would love this place. My friend got the grilled cheese with everything, which looked great. I made the mistake of ordering the cheesesteak with fries, hold the cole slaw and tomato. I should have known I was in trouble when I asked for hots and the guys behind the counter had no idea what I was talking about. It looked like babkas, with the meat was in patty form. The sandwich had great potential which it did not live up to. The fries were good (a little undercooked for my taste) and the cheese was nice and gooey. If I had been hungover my stomach would have been very happy. But I was the DD that weekend so I didn't really need the grease. Love the story behind it. That made the trip worth while.
  3. I was away this weekend so I was not able to cook. Friday I ate a duck with truffles and foie gras pate sandwich as I began my trip. My friend took one look at me eating my decadant lunch as I drove and just shook her head. We both thought the other was crazy.
  4. I know people who worked with Julia Child and her team as the exhibit evolved, before the objects were acquired through the official opening. They were in as much awe of her throughout the process as we are with the exhibit. One person (who was involved with every major exhibit at the Smithsonian for most of the 90's) said it was one of his best experiences.
  5. Here is the latest list, including the maybes. Right now we are at capacity (I think) but there may be room as the maybes make their decision. Please check the list to make sure you are on there if you think you are coming. Let me know if I missed you. Also, those of you with maybe's, please let me know how many you will be as soon as possible. 6. You have no idea how confusing this is to read after driving 12 out of the last 45 hours. My brain is still working on passing the next damn camper on the road going 45 in the left lane. How long was it closed for? Oh, yeah, I agree with Hooligan, enough already!!!!!!!
  7. Thanks, babka. I was at a wedding in Country Club/Chain food hell for the weekend. I have not had a fresh vegetable in 3 days and am trying not to completely loose it A whole lot of you RSVP's while I was away so it may take me a day or two to contact you. We are getting close to our limit, so I am going to add people to the list in the order that you either a) posted a response or b) Pm'd me. Keep your eye on the thread for an updated list. I don't know if I have the energy to PM you all back right away, but I will do my best Al, mnegerball, I've said it before, I'll say it again. Go start your own thread
  8. Chi cha used to have them, but it's been awhile since I was there so I can't be sure.
  9. Okay folks, we are up to 40. If you are interested let us know now or you will be SOL. babka and I are trying to work on a surprise guest or two just to keep you guessing. As for the menu, if anyone has any food allergies please let me or babka know ASAP! Otherwise, we are keeping it under wraps but from the looks of it so far you will not be disappointed. My mouth is already watering. I also need to know about the maybes in the group. You have until the 31st to let us know. babka +1 hillvalley laniloa Nadya Bilrus + 1 Al_Dente + 1 iamthestretch eunny jang Chef Shogun rhodegirl + 1 mdt edemuth +3 littlechinagirl [+1?] otello + 1 busboy mrs busboy silentbob gnatharobed + 1 [+1?] woodleygrrl roger troutman monica + 1 mnegerball tailfins + 1 MCJB2 +1 jpw [maybe] surprise guests [maybe]
  10. Sigh, this work thing gets in the way of my eG time. I missed all the excitement. Sigh Ummm Rocks, have you rsvp'd? The final menu is still being worked out but with tax and tip, but not including wines it will be about $40. We are still figuring out how to do the wine and will keep you posted. Babka and I decided to use Paypal, so when we figure out whose account to send the $ to you we will let you know. current list for 7:30 pm on September 7: babka hillvalley laniloa Nadya Bilrus + 1 Al_Dente + 1 iamthestretch eunny jang Chef Shogun rhodegirl + 1 mdt edemuth +3 littlechinagirl [+1?] otello + 1 busboy mrs busboy silentbob gnatharobed + 1 [+1?] woodleygrrl roger troutman monica + 1 mnegerball jpw [maybe] [dcmark?] jpw, do you think the misses will be up to joining us? Would you like us to see if you can take home dinner to her? You owe her a lot of extra diaper changings if you make it to 2 eG events without her
  11. It has been almost 10 years since I was last in Worcester (at Clark) but I know these two are still around. Tokyo Rose, which is right off one of the main avenues about 4-6 blocks from Clark, has good sushi and fine benihana. They had a number of items on the menu that you don't find at usual American Japanese restaurants. On Sunday they had a great all you can eat brunch that was perfect for hangovers, not that your daughter will have that problem. There is a local book store, Tatnucks, which had a great restaurant in it. Good American food that was reasonable. Not to mention it is in one of my favorite book stores (and that is saying a lot.) On the same Ave. as Tokyo Rose there was a wonderful Latino market. They had a great selection of unusual fruits. Right near there was a Korean restaurant that was amazing. My freshman roommate was Korean (I was in Wright Hall) and she loved the place. Most importantly, great late night pizza. If you walk out the Main gate and make a left there is a pizza joint a couple of stores down. They made a carmelized onion pizza that got me through my two years there. I loved that pizza. It was the perfect blend of carmelized onions, sauce and cheese that strung out when you ate it. Ohhhhh, it's been a long time. Does Daka still run the dinning hall?
  12. Mrs. B, did you have our lemon drink? I have been dreaming of them for a week now. Does anyone know how late they are open?
  13. We couldn't have an eG event without you two (unless it was girls night out of course ). You're there, at the bottom, supporting the rest of the list. We've got room for about 20 more so don't be shy.
  14. My esteemed co-organizer and I have conferred and decided to stick with the 7th. Once again, but I am sure not for the last time, who is in?
  15. I love mango jellies. I just finished a huge container I got at the Asian Market. On my first trip to England I fell in love with their junk food. Bounty bars, wine gums and mini Polo mints (which apparently they don't make any more ) are my favorite. And those crisps. I loved them all. I made a point of trying a different junk food every day.
  16. If you are anywhere near Princeton go straight to the Bent Spoon. It doesn't get any better.
  17. Steve, actually we agree. I don't think he needed to find out users real names, contact posters, etc. In the past the Post has done articles about eG/EGCI without contacting authors/posters. I was just pointing out that had he wanted to contact anyone here, it is quite simple, handle or no handle.
  18. I disagree. It would only have taken him a few minutes to register and PM or email anyone, real name or handle.
  19. We are going to ask for some form of prepayment before the event. CK is opening just for us and it would not be fair to them for people to be no shows. The fine details are still in discussion but if you have any suggestions feel free to PM me.
  20. Okay, the 7th it is. This date works best for CK so we are letting them make the final decision. So who is in?
  21. Let's talk menu. Is there anything you would like to request? We are still working out the details with Chef and Robin but need suggestions.
  22. I just looked at a calander and realized the Rosh Hashana starts on the 15th. This makes the 14th a little tricky for me. I can do my cooking the weekend before, but is this a conflict for anyone else? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post it. littlechinagirl, are you and The Manager joining us? I hope so! You can always leave him at the Diner if you need to
  23. You beat me to it. The diner on Connecticut up by the Avalon is also open late.
  24. Good, I can bring the GF copies of what you have been doing around here lately
  25. I think this is critical if they are going to come in on their day off to make us a special meal. Perhaps we need to get a cell phone number of the organizer (via PM) so that last minute dropouts can be filled from the sure to develop wait list? Another idea would be to pre-pay the base cost via credit card so that if someone drops off last minute and that spot is not filled from the wait list Chef Gillian and Robin do not bear the cost. If this is a hassle for them at CK, maybe we could set up a PayPal account so that one of us is responsible for getting the pre-pays???? This is an excellent suggestion. I would be interested in how it works out. I never thought of locking people in by getting them to pay upfront through paypal. That will certainly make some think twice before bailing out two hours before the event. I really don't like the idea of locking people in, or having them pay before hand. Emergencies happen, the car breaks down, the paper doesn't get written, etc. I also think we need to go event by event. At some events (such as the Full Key dinner) it does not matter how many show up. Of course at others it does. Somethings to think about: What is the restaurant expecting from us? Have they created a menu just for us and therefor need to guarantee revenue? Do they care how many people show up? I was thinking more along the lines of a better contact system in case someone does have to back out.
