  1. Then add a big bowl of gummy bears please The rest of you may not know this, but mktye is a master bread baker and homemade marshmellow maker. From our picnic last month: (All the spreads were homemade too!!!!) We've got to find a way to add bread and marshmellows to the menu
  2. The best hostess gift I ever got was an assortment of cheeses and meats. The guests were down for the weekend from Philly. On their way down they stopped at the Italian Market and went nuts. All weekend long we had something to snack on and I was in Italian meat heaven for the next week.
  3. Mktye, I've done the fish bowl a number of times in my classroom. This year we did individual fish tanks in plastic see threw cups. It was great. I got gummy octopus, fish, sharks, and a whale. Speaking of gummy, are gummy bears from the 80's? With the seltzer and wine you could make wine spritzers.
  4. I am in for either date. Tomdc, you've got a ride if you need it. As we plan this we need to discuss attendance so we do not end up short again. What do you all think?
  5. There used to be a bunch in the DC area but I can only think of one that is still open. I love the no cell phone rule. With rare exception (waiting for an organ transplant, ability to have the babysitter contact you incase of emergency) there is no reason for you to pull out the phone during dinner. I still think it is rude to have a phone conversation in the middle of the meal, 21st century or not. It sounds like the chain is trying to become more upscale. They will have to change more than the dress code before that happens.
  6. You no longer have much say in that matter, especially while you are out of the country
  7. Um, your fellow men outed themselves a long time ago on the DC Picnic thread. And I quote: Let's invite some of the employees from Good Guys to our event! Strippers and BBQ - sounds like a good combination to me.
  8. Jello Pudding Pops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. I'd like to point out that the women picked up your reference right away! (For those of you not from DC, next to Sushi Ko is a place where "Good Guys" go and watch women)
  10. Hey, go get your own thread and take your "sushi" with you.
  11. What about Rocky Road Me Amedeus? For cereals, what about Apple Jacks or Boo Berry and Count Choculah. The sweet rice krispies came out then too. I love the pic!
  12. Pictures! I want pictures! You're with the press. Frankly, Greek cafeteria food sounds absolutely gross. I can't get the vision of old limp octopus out of my head. What about food in the arenas? What are the concession stands serving? One of the best meals I had in Europe was in Athens, five (gasp) summers ago. It was the last night of a 15 country in 30 days tour and I was ready to go home. I got a recommendation from our tour guide and she sent us to one of her favorites. It was in some market, down a couple of sketchy back alleys that opened onto a beautiful little plaza. The owners were so excited to have American tourists that they treated us royally. We got a tour of the kitchen where it took all my self control to not burst with excitement. For dinner they just started sending out food. Except for the dolmas (which I love) I have no idea what we ate, except that it was damn good. Then one of the owners came out with a small guitar like instrument and serenaded us. Mmmmm, haven't thought about that meal in a long time.
  13. Thanks for all of the suggestions. My parents had an amazing meal at Kirin Mandarin. The did the multi course banquet meal and loved every dish. My parents are huge Peking duck freaks (they used to make their own) and declared Kirin's in their top five. My dad kept going on about how they actually give you enough pancakes and did not serve any of the meat. They were in Peking Duck heaven. They also had a fantastic meal at C. Before they left my father set the goal of having salmon at least once a day on their trip. If I remember correctly he had three courses worth at C. Thanks again
  14. Did you go to St. Peters? During I asked about the ice cream. Turns out it's bogus. Which is fine since it was pretty awful anyway. The gift shop at the Air & Space is the most popular in the city and I think it takes in the most revenue. Or at least it used to.

    caesar dressing

I have no idea how I learned to make mine, I assume my mother taught me. I think I was 8 or 9. Take a deep wooden bowl and rub with cut garlic. Mince garlic and mix with an egg, lemon juice, s&p, evoo and a touch of dijon mustard. If my sister wasn't joining us I added minced anchovies to the dressing. Top with croutons and a sh$# load of parm or reggiano. Gonna have to get some Romain at market this week.
  16. Don't get your hopes up. I've fallen victim to this scam before. It looks fantastic on paper, but in real life the food is a let down. Granted, I have higher expectations than the average tourist, but it's still lousy. When you come down, walk a few blocks up 7th and you will find great eats!
  17. How apropos! Think "expense account steakhouse". But wait -- I'm a Scorpio, but not a dipper! This is pseudoscience!!!!1!!@! With the exception of the middle aged male part, this isn't too far off the mark. It read like an advertisement though, which was annyoing.
  18. For the greater good of the Shorter family I would be willing to make the sacrifice and take some off of your hands
  19. Don't forget an order or two of the conch fritters! So what kind of skirt are we talking here? Long and flowy, leather, mini, jean? Definately need to be vetted. We have strict requirements
  20. You are an absolute riot!!!! Who knew you had so many hidden talents? What about Pop Rocks? Wasn't that whole scandal in the 80's?
  21. uhhhhh, no we don't need a token male. but since you're offering to wear a skirt we will take it into consideration and turtle, you wish you could see the pictures
  22. I agree with hj, of course you should be called Chef. As a black woman who owns her own restaurant you are a wonderful role model. Do you do any mentoring or give talks to young people in the area? How do you feel about being considered a role model. On a different track, what do you cook for your daughters? Do they enjoy being in the kitchen?
  23. Edamame would work perfectly. Boil the day before, add salt before serving. Procsuitto with melon is great this time of year. Role up slices of Proscuitto, slice up the melon and put on a platter. Mini mozzerrella balls with basic and balsamic, served with tooth picks. Hummus travels well and easy to make. Tuna or Salmon pate is also easy to whip up, but needs to be kept cold while traveling.
  24. Actually, the National Gallery of Art isn't technically part of the Smithsonian. Their waterfall at the cafe is wonderful, the food is just lousy. There is a dining room in the Castle, but you have to be either staff or a member to diner there (I think). The food is decent but expensive and not worth it.
  25. Hey Busboy, your wife promised me pics of the rowers, swimmers and divers. And I'm not talking about the women's team:biggrin:
