  1. Wow Suzilightning -your coworker actually "cooked" their sauce, huh? looks like grape jelly is the clear leader in cocktail weenie sauce-making.
  2. hey that's the green stuff i was exposed to for the first time this past Thanksgiving. I loved it!
  3. i'm with you sister. on both points - altho i think the mysterious "Green stuff" i had the other day might be a congealed salad. Lime Jello, cottage cheese and orange segments were identifiable in it.
  4. Maybe i'm either thick-skinned, or am not particularly politically atuned, but I fail to see where fellow posters have gotten particularly political at all in this thread? i can understand your complaints with the articles - and everythign you seem to take issue with is within the articles - but I don't see where our fellow posters got involved one way or the other? unless a dislike for fishy jello is somehow partisan.
  5. so here's a question for y'all...... I too would love the convenience of single cup as I only drink one cup a day - and have been pretty much subsiting on instant (a decent instant) but still an instant during the week and then breaking out my coffeemaker on weekends. So ehre's the deal - i know most American brews are 1 tbsp per 6 oz cup. I prefer 2tbsps per 6oz cup on most blends - except the darker ones where it's more like 1.5tbsps will these various coffee pods give em the brew strength i like? Can i get that strength with one pod or am i looking at 2 pods per cup? Just seems like it could get expensive altho i guess even at $.50 a cup it's still cheaper than most other options.
  6. hmm...i would like to see Bandar Bush's recipes as well. I wonder if he dumbed the food down any. Considering the various people i've had the pleasure of supping with, i'd have to say that I don't really consider this food Plebian. Easy maybe - but i've met alot of salt-of-the-earth good cooks. Who even do wonders with Jello. Had some good jello concoction that was called "green stuff" jsut this past weekend. Grandma's ring mould doesn't sound good.
  7. man y'all got country in this thread..... i'll just add my list: sweet tea cornbread (the unsweet kind) boiled peanuts scuppernongs and muscadines pralines divinity sweet potato pie red velvet cake banana pudding fried corn black eyed peas and lima beans done "right" fried green tomatoes moonshine
  8. hmm..the funniest thing i saw this thanksgiving had nothing to do with food. I was on the porch with my hostess's son, daughter-in-law and their 3 year old. Well the little girl starts ringing the doorbell. Finally grandma answers the door and says "Who is it?" (knowing full well it was her granddaughter). her Grand-daughter then proceeded to grab her breast and give it a good squeeze. needless to say we were all too stunned to say anything, and then proceeded to crack up laughing.
  9. I should prolly add my potluck nightmare scenario.... picture this - a pristine looking banana pudding. looks yummy - the bananas aren't even browning. so everyone takes a big scoop. what does it taste like? pink oil hair sheen. the only thing i can think of is that whoever made it decided to het their hair "did" over the bowl of banana pudding. i never ate anything she brought again. i'm wary of office potlucks. i know for a fact i have some nasty coworkers who don't wahs their hands. and those people are at every job.
  10. oh wow.....a new jar of+can/bottle of to add to my collection.... i made a thread about this phenomena a few months back. Poor marketStEl was the only one willing to play: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showto...l=currant+jelly

    Using Up the Apples

I'm in Dallas, so nowhere near apple country, in other words. Even when I buy 'em organic they're mealy. ← I'm in Georgia now, so i'm in a similar situation - i think it might be those that are shipped either lose their goodness on the way, or didn't have the goodness to begin with. When I lived in New York and could get them off the tree in Orchards they were delicious - but even in grocery stores up there, they were hit or miss.

    Using Up the Apples

Mainly for centrepieces, garlands and wreaths, specially for outdoors since they can survive freezing and thawing. If you bite them though, you will discover that the few bites are crisp, juicy and intensely flavourful. ← huh - so they are tasty....tell me - do you think they'd be good as candy or caramel apples? they seem like a nice treat size.

    Using Up the Apples

I don't know. are you in Macintosh Apple Country presently? I noticed the difference between the ones picked off a tree and the ones in the grocery store. the grocery ones were horrible - the tree ones of course, were delicious. maybe they've been bred to hell?

    Using Up the Apples

here's a question - what are "lady apples" used for? i've seen a lot of these in my farmers market - greenish with a red tinge, and they're tiny - maybe golf-ball sized? just looking at them i presume they are really sour, and i'm not sure what they would be used for.

    Using Up the Apples

hmm..i'll have to look for Pink Lady's as well. and maybe check out soem of the North Georgia Orchards - i think we grow apples here. I know there's apple bread to be had at certain times of year, so i'm presuming there are orchards.

bergerka - what a great idea......i might have to start baking this weekend. mind you it's still in the mid-80s around here, so it doesn't feel like the right time - but if the apples think it's the season, then it's the season.

Macs and Courtlands used to be my favorites too - but soemwhere along the line they became more mealy than tasty and I stopped trying to enjoy them. (it might have been just the ones that get shipped). macintoshes are still the best for cider and pies in my book tho. I think that's why i like the Honeycrisp - it's flavor is reminiscent of mac to me. Like a cross between a mac and a red delicious. and i guess my taste buds are on target....meet honeycrisp's folks: http://www.honeycrisp.org/herit.htm
  20. and for some reason - i've just rediscovered the joys of apple season, which i haven't really appreciated since i was a kid in Upstate New York. I'm all about eating out of hand at the moment, and thankfully my local farmer's market has a large variety. I used to be a strictly red delicious and granny smith girl - but red delicious seem to have gotten nasty sometime since the last time I ate them. I definitely prefer a crisp apple - and I tried Fujis and Honeycrisps for the first time this year - they are definitely my favorites. Galas are okay, but not quite crisp enough for me. What are your favorites, and does anyone have suggestions for other crisp apples to try?
  21. I'm sorry - but this looks like something you find in a diaper.
  22. wow - you succintly went through my exact thought process - except my toss-up would be garlic vs everything.
  23. still - i can't believe it's been 3 years, either. you've been doing good. and you've learned so much. may i shed a tear of pride? (altho i've had nothing to do with most of this progress?)
  24. yeah - toast definitely does not = bagels. well unless it's lender's bagels. if the choice is thomas's english muffins vs lender's bagels i'm sorry - the english muffin wins.
