  1. I'd like to know that one for sure! Is it Yeer-ows? ← It was covered already. Busboy gave the definitive answer which I cannot remember for the life of me. ← in this thread? i must have missed it - i pretty much started skimming form the gabbagool/fazool discussions and french pronunication issues on....
  2. the subway. but that's not necessarily food-related.
  3. seems like we need to discuss gyros - or: Geeh-rows Guy-rows Ghy-rows Yeer-ows
  4. baha. maybe not cooking but definitely personal coffee brewing. stout is more of a breakfast food to me. if only it had caffeine.
  5. i'm afraid you may have to explain the t as "th" and d as "dh" now that you've gotten started milagai. and finally yes chai is pronounced like fly.
  6. You're too kind, really. I'm quite certain that I'm eating enough, quite enough. But, thanks. I mean, I work out at least twice a week and all, but I'm no jsolomon.... ← well just making sure.....not enough calories int he earlier part of the day is often the root of binging later in the day. not that i'm accusing you of binging mind - but i know i would go nuts if all i had for lunch was a clif bar or even a shin cup. a shin bowl maybe, but evne with those, i start going nuts around 3-ish. But i think that's more of a simple carbohydrate issue. as for jsolomon - i think he's given many of us a bit of an inferiority complex. *lol*
  7. thanks trillium! yeah i figured the dried out part was sloppy cooking on the resto's part. but you learn something new every day. I will look for Chaokoh brand Coconut milk. I've never seen Mae Ploy - but so far i've used Roland and some Sri Lankan milk which wasn't good at all.
  8. wow this thread is really interesting. Peanutgirl - i'm scared of you! that's a heck of a blizzard dinner. here are my questions....so far i've tried the Mae Ploy Green paste with a chicken and eggplant curry, and i tried fried tofu in the Mae Ploy panang curry. i followed the directions on the little tubs both times, and i just can't replicate what i taste at good thai restaurants. (creamy, redolent of coconut and nicely spiced). mine have come out harshly spicy, not redolent of coconut at all, and very salty. the panang curry i made i actually doctored with some brown sugar, and a smidge of peanut butter. it started to taste better, but is still tearing up my insides and the texture was kind of gloppy. is it just a matter of dropping the paste ratio down a bit? are there other ingredients that y'all add that isn't included on the container directions? and out of curiosity - i rodered mango and sticky rice forma restuarant once - and i was at a loss as to how to eat it. it came in a sticky rice patty, and it was kinda crunchy and dried out around the edges, and was really chewy but i couldn't figure otu hwo to combine it with the mango slices and coconut sauce. (which tasted quite good together).
  9. honestly - it seems to me you are not eating enough, to begin with, hence the afternoon cravings, and the rest of your day falling apart. how about Trail Mix? When i was really tight on my game, i used to pack a homemade trailmix, that would have things like almonds, walnuts, apricot and pinapple bits in it. or switch it up, and use macadamias, golden raisins and dried coconut pieces. I'd put it in those little snack baggies, and have it for my 3pm "meal" along with soem unsweetened green tea , and that would tide me over until my 6pm meal. (with a workout in between) another option for pre-workout was chocolate whey protein mixed with gatorade, but that's an aquired taste methinks. cottage cheese cups can work - especially if you have some fruit to mix in. the idea is for it to be higher in protein and fat, and not so much cheap and easy sugar. but that's a good tip for all day long, because sugar cycles can be vicious.
  10. well i can give my first distinct independent foreign food adventure. I was in college, and we went on a cultural anthropological tour of NYC - we visited temples and mosques and art galleries, and all sorts of stuff. Since it was all college kids - there was a large faction of "Harlem? we can't go to Harlem! why do we have ot go there? Why can't we just do American stuff?" this faction chose to get pizza when we hit Soho for lunch and were tasked with assignement of eating something we'd never had before. The other faction - us adventurous types, chose to hit this hole in the wall pho shop (didn't realize that's what it was called then - it was jsut Vietnamese to me). Technically we sort of cheated too, because the leader on that assignmnet had actually had Vietnamese before, and thought it was pretty good - I found it to be a revelation and to this day one of the best lunches i've ever had. College was great for that kind of thing tho. I remember the first week of orientation one of the Jewish guys in my class had his first bacon cheeseburger washed down with milk to a whole lot of pomp and circumstance and cheering.
  11. i think making kimchi is fairly simple, altho i don't know how. i tired to do a quick search for you, because surely there is a recipe soemwhere on this site, but we talk about kimchi entirely too much around here, and i wasn't able to find anything specific.
  12. i think Sprayberry's had to be it. RB2 - i';m not sure if you were referring to my post with comment about sides - which i do agree with you on - but Daddy Dz normally has really good beans. i don't know what happened on my last visit.
  13. to the butter or oil, add a little cumin powder, a little corainder powder, cayenne powder, and garlic powder - i do a 2:1:1 ratio with the first three, and also add salt and a little sugar to taste - you might even want to toast some shredded coconut in there, or add later, and pop the corn int hat oil. good sweet spicy flavor.
  14. halalsushi (love the name btw) - i'm sure there are ramen shops around in heavily Korean areas, but none that i have seen. You can find a lot of the varieties of dried ramen at various stores here tho. jayt90 - the shin cups have dried kimchee in them? i didn't even notice - i jsut remember the dried chive and mushrooms.
  15. i second Champs in Smyrna - always good - and Daddy Dz is quite good too, altho their quality seems hit or miss to me lately. the last time i went their beans came directly from a can, no doctoring. I was not happy. Now if my memory serves isn't there supposed to be some to die for absolutely wonderful BBQ joint South of Atlanta on the way to Calloway Gardens perhaps?
  16. i think almost any salty pork product tastes good with maple syrup. as for me - i tried roquefort and honey this past weekend. not bad at all.
  17. this thread makes me think of the Queer Eye for the Striaght Guy episode i watched this weekend: http://www.bravotv.com/Queer_Eye_for_the_S...recipe142.shtml
  18. italian eggplant tastes really good cut up and roasted with honey. don't have a recipe beyond that.
  19. geez - looks like everybody loves Shin Cups! (or bowls). that was the ramen that was a revelation to me, that i mentioned up top.
  20. i actually like Coke with Lime. alot - it's actually the only coke product i drink right now. i think i might be addicted. but i don't really like it for the lime taste - i like it because it's a little less sweet and a little less of an assualt on me than regular coke.
  21. haha - i don't think they are closing early - i jsut wind up on cheshire bridge at like 3:05am, or 2:15 or some such hour. just after they've closed. sorry to hear your water got turned off - this is when gym memberships come in handy.
  22. yes. it's a rite of passage. one i haven't gotten a chance to do yet, actually - because the damn clermont keeps closing by the time i get there. ← So if the Clermont closes before you get there you are staying out way too late. I had no idea that the Clermont actually ever closed, frankly. Didn't Bourdain say he'd been to the Clermont when he visited Atlanta a few months back? How can you resist with endorsement like that? ← i don't know - it seems like it would be Bourdain's kind of joint tho. And yeah you're right - i'm out way too late usually - or perhaps they close way too early. *lol* actually since they changed the liquor ordinances in fulton - every place is closing way too early.
  23. yes. it's a rite of passage. one i haven't gotten a chance to do yet, actually - because the damn clermont keeps closing by the time i get there. fg - how are you as well?
  24. well welcome to Atlanta - first things first - where will you be living/working - this makes all the difference in the world down here. As for Highlights that are worth the visit no matter where you live - Dekalb Farmer's Market is a must. You can get decent Gyros around here - and are greaspits are the barbecue kind. :) Again this depends on where you are located. Doh - prolly should have scrolled more. I dunno what's up in Alpharetta - altho i hear there's soem good Indian up that way - and isn't there a good bbq joint therese? (how ya been btw? ;)) I second Muss and Turners which is right down the street form me. love that place!
