Prom site help

BeerGut

Recommended Posts

I was tempted to put this in the Special Ocassion forum except I need a site in Northen NJ.

I'm a new teacher in a Bergen County High School and I'm trying to make arrangements for our prom. We need a non-hotel site, a Friday night, for about 300 kids.

I'm hoping the eGullet community has been to/talked about/experienced enough places to be able to give me a lead.

Thanks!

It may be pricey, but maybe the Venetian in Garfield might be a good bet. For what it's worth, I talk more about the wedding I went to when I was younger at the Venetian than I do about my prom. I'm sure that you'd save a fortune since you'd not be serving liquor; an open bar can't be cheap. I'll bet the students will be a bit disappointed about that. :-P

If you don't mind the location (a bit out of the way in Verona) there's the mainstay of the Temple Sholom of West Essex bar and bat mitzvah receptions, the Richfield Regency. Also a fine location. The food is decent, more so than most of the places I went to in the '94-96 season.

There is also the Bethwood in Totowa...in my experience the quality greatly depends on the budget

Of course, if you don't mind a bit of a ride, the Manor is known for all the proms that go on there. I hear they do a great job. Seasons is a little small for 300, I think, but it is lovely. One of the girls that work for me had her prom there last spring and had a ball. The Bethwood, I've heard more bad than good, but who is to say! Good luck!

Perhaps the Wayne Manor on Rt 23? There are also some Country Clubs (something in Alpine rings a bell). I had my prom at the Westmont Country Club in West Paterson and it was outstanding.

For 300, you may need a hotel ballroom...Loews Glenpointe is in Teaneck, iirc, and there is a Hilton in Hackensack, right at the interstection of 17/80/Polifly Road...

Hi

Wife is a HS teacher. Did the prom planning thing for a while. Best food, value, and treatment was at the Valley Regency in Clifton.

or try the Rockleigh CC in Beregn County

Pretty late to do this. Most schools book a year out.

Thank you all arouond.

We can't have a hotel because of previous experiences, so the Hilton, etc are out.

The late attempt at prom plans is a result of previous experiences.

I'll let you know what happens.

Worst-case scenario, we booked my prom only a couple months ahead at Headquarters Plaza. It's got a detached hotel but they don't require you to book hotel rooms to have a function there. It's a great space but the food could be a tad bit better. However, I was there in 1998 (Oh man, am I dating myself or what) so things have hopefully changed.

Honestly, if the Venetian can take you, it'll be the night of their lives.

BeerGut, just curious - what do you teach?

My kids have been to a couple at the Westmont Country club in W. Paterson/Totowa and had a great time. Also Seasons. but I don't know how big it is.

Headquarters Plaza is now owned by Hyatt. Their prices went up with their renovation and they are a hotel property.

I went to a wedding at The Bethwood, a few yrs back. The bride was Mayalsian and there was a lot of fish at the cocktail hour and it was quite good. so.....Could also be what dinners you choose..

Thanks again everyone. We've made arrangements at the Bethwood. Everyone expects it will be wonderful. The concern about having the affair at a hotel is kids getting rooms and hosting parties which quickly get out of hand.
