I know, I know, I should make it myself, but where in Vancouver can I find frozen puff pastry made with butter?

Anyone?

Cheers,

OK, not looking good so far:

President's Choice (from website): puff pastry in prepared products (doesn't specify if it is make with butter), but no puff pastry sold separately

La Baguette: made with vegetable shortening; special order for butter, minumum 5 kilos

These stores do not carry it:

Whole Foods, Capers, Urban Fare, Choices.

Looks like I better brush up on my pastry skills unless someone has more suggestions.

The puff pastry I get from President's Choice here in Ontario is indeed made with butter.

Practice. Do it over. Get it right.

Mostly, I want people to be as happy eating my food as I am cooking it.

Great thanks! I'll check out the local stores.

I would phone some of the local bakeries, especially La Baquette at Granville Island. I think you would have more luck there than at a grocery store.

Thanks peppyre, I did try La Baguette but they only do it as a special order minimum 5 kilos, which is too much for me. Looks like President's Choice might work and I'm considering sharing an order from La Baguette with a couple of friends in the future.

FYI for future reference, Capers does carry premade fresh pie crusts (don't know about puff pastry) made with butter, however you can only use them for pies you fill, then bake, as they met if baked empty for a filled pie.

I have a package of the Presidents Choice Butter puff pastry in my freezer. Ingredients are as follows: wheat flour, water, unsalted butter, hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oil margarine, salt. Not entirely butter but at least more butter than other fats. I haven't tried it yet but plan to in the next week or two for a Diplomat Cake. I bought it here in Mission so I'm sure every where else has it too.

I remember seeing a sign at the Valley Bakery on Hastings indicating that they have puff pastry available. Don't know about the butter though. I guess I'll be the one to say that puff pastry really isn't that hard to make, takes time, but most of that is dough resting in the fridge.

Thanks Choux. I do know it isn't all that hard to make puff pastry.

For the record I did find President's Choice Butter Puff Pastry; however it is not made 100% with butter. It also contains hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oil margarine.

barolo, sorry I didn't see this sooner. Head on over to the Gourmet Warehouse - you'll find it in the fridge/freezer.

Has anyone purchased butter puff pastry from La Baguetter Bakery yet? How much is the special order?

Barolo, did you buy butter puff pastry from Gourmet Warehouse? Is it truly all butter? What is the weight and price?

Thanks.

La Patisserie Bordeaux (the one in the same mini-mall that Les Amis used to be in) used to sell butter puff pastry. You called in advance and it was frozen. It has been a couple of years since I ordered from them but if they did it perhaps the other French bakeries might also sell puff pastry. Worth a shot.

No I was out of time so I used the President's Choice product. Next time I'm at Gourmet Warehouse I'll check it out and report here if someone else hasn't beaten me to it.
